What a great find. Cosy place. Choose a daily changing 3 course dinner with fish of the day for around 5990, an Icelandic 3course with lamb for 6990, the large tasting menu for 9900 or a La carte. You can watch the plates being prepared on the counter.
They cook traditional recipes with a modern twist. We really enjoyed the halibut soup and the Cod's head.
Reservation encouraged.
We visited on our honeymoon and enjoyed every bit! Food and service were fantastic. The menu is unique and gives a modern taste of Icelandic cuisine.
Definitely some modern takes on traditional Iceland food. Enjoyable, but the location can be a little out of the way (especially in the winter)
A great treat. The place is small, with the pass IN the restaurant which makes it fun to watch the art of good food. A pleasure to see a good team at work. Started with Icelandic cheese served with beet root. Main course was lamb, which was excellent. My wife had halibut soup, and ling. We finished with Skyr. The Cotes du Rhone was also nice. Worth the travel to Iceland.
Incredible food, really friendly staff and a really inviting atmosphere. The dishes are adventurous, exquisite and so fresh. We had a brilliant time at the best restaurant in Reykjavik, and so will you!
After a warm welcome and help deciding what to choose we were well looked after by Christine. So friendly and softly spoken she was the sweetest waitress ever. Any question we had about the food was no trouble at all. The food was fabulous and the cocktails were delicious, especially the cod's head in chicken stock, which was flamed before serving. I can also recommend the pineapple weed, anglia liqueur and heavy cream. So nice that I was granted a second extra generous serving. Beautiful authentic interior as well.
We visited because the main bartender won a cocktail competition at the time. The food was great - but a little on a small side, so don't worry that you will fill up on bread and their incredible butter! The drinks were delicious!
It was funny because our waiter had a similar hand injury as me! Not sure he was happy about the pic but it was funny nonetheless!
Limited number of free parking spots. Unique decor. Nice atmosphere. Food took long to prepare. But, was very good.
If you want a taste of Icelandic cuisine, this is the place to eat! They take traditional icelandic recipes and bring them into the 21st century. The dishes give you a great understanding of the types of techniques and tastes used in Icelandic cuisine. From thick, creamy, filling soups to baked tomatoes that drive away all the chill of the Icelandic wind, the seemingly simple food enchants you with a variety of textures, temperatures and subtle spices. I'm a vegetarian and it had amazing options; even though it's known for its seafood and I hear the lamb is to die for.
Had the Icelandic menu which was good. However, staff were a bit slow to serve us on many occasions and we left feeling a bit hungry given the money we paid / courses received. Otherwise food was lovely & atmosphere was nice.
Always a great food experience. The fish of the day is usually amazing. The mini kleinas with caramel are the best dessert ❤️
Excellent reworking of traditional Icelandic dishes. The cod head was prepared in the front of the kitchen with torches it made for quite the spectacle. The dung smoked trout was the best thing I've ever tasted.
This restaurant is known for the Cod Head, but we were honestly not crazy about it. The highlight for me was the cod soup - definitely give it a try. The skyr dessert was delicious as well.
Thoughtful and well executed menu. Service was friendly and very attentive. The staff at Matur og Drykkur, whether front of house or back of house, are all highly skilled professionals.
One criticism however was the way in which my partner had to reiterate her dietary restrictions, even though we'd made note of this in our reservation. I think the initial awkwardness of having to explain her being celiac and the resulting back and forth between the server and kitchen as to which dishes would have to be altered, could have been avoided had the staff reviewed our reservation prior to dinner service. In fact, it specifically states on their website that given enough notice, most dietary needs can be accommodated. I think this could have been handled better.
Besides this, our experience was positive and would highly recommend Matur og Drykkur to anyone staying in Reykjavik.
Wow the food here is amazing. We had the seafood menu and the vegetarian menu which were delicious. Each dish was cooked to perfection and very tasty.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a theatre show to attend in an hour and the chef obliged our request to rush each serving. We did however return for dessert. Each staff member including the chef was very cheerful which made the whole dining our experience even better.
Reservations are necessary because this is a very popular restaurant. The restaurant is also in the Michelin Guide.
There are good reasons why Matur og Drykkur is so highly regarded: the atmosphere in this small restaurant is warm and relaxed; the staff are friendly and well-informed about the way the menu is constructed; and the food is simply perfection. The set menus are designed to tell a story about Icelandic cuisine, and whether you're indulging in the vegetarian, seafood, or meat option you'll feel as though you've been on a real journey throughout the eight courses. I can't recommend this place highly enough - it's quite an experience.
The lamb was fantastically tender. Lunch prices were very acceptable for this level of food in Iceland. The plating was beautiful and the snack board had an interesting selection.
Astonishingly good tasting menus. Hands down, one of the best meals of our lives. Totally worth getting the matching drinks option. Amazing service too. Expensive but oh so worth it.
Matur og Drykkur, which translates quite humbly to 'Food and Drink' in Icelandic was one of the best (if not the best) restaurant experiences we had in Iceland. We made it to the restaurant, situated at the lobby of a creepy, historical wax museum, just 40m before closing but our host/waiter graciously welcomed us in and the back of house sprang into action wasting no time to start on our tasting menus.
The interior is open, airy while still cozy and warm. It was beautiful while still being welcoming and low-key and the smells coming out the kitchen were divine.
Our food was an incredibly unique, 8 course prefix meal, flush with traditional Icelandic fare prepared with new and old techniques. Our waiter was amazing - he gave us space to enjoy our food and conversation but magically appeared whenever we needed anything from a wine refill to a question about our food. He enthusiastically regaled us with funny, fascinating stories and facts about Icelandic history and ingredients including a demonstration of fish ear bones (Otoliths) on the huge, tasty cods head we were eating.
A lot of stops we made on our Iceland trip seemed build out of necessity to cater to tourists, which we were, and that is completely fine. But Matur og Drykkur was a change of pace, it was a place where we weren't so rushed to see and experience the next best thing, a restaurant where the waiters and chefs had tons of personality were genuinely excited to share their food and culture with you. Of course, above all a place where you could eat delicious, adventurous and authentic food. I will definitely come back for some Food and Drink.
The dinner tasting menu sits just around $100 USD/pp.
Mid-priced quality restaurant serving Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist. Very friendly staff. They offer an 8 course tasting menu and a 3 course menu which includes their renowned halibut soup (as seen on Rick Stein's Long Weekend BBC series last year).
Good food but an expensive affair.
We had the lamb and the salmon which were both really nice but not as incredible as we expected. They however do a marvelous twist on traditional Icelandic dishes.
The staff are very friendly and very helpful.
The place is a bit out of the city centre but a pleasant walk.
The experience was worth it but wouldn't go back in a hurry.
