Well located with a 15 minute walk to the town. The lobby is modern, clean and welcoming with friendly staff. Breakfast is of a good quality but the standard of the rooms is poor. It’s as if you step away from modern day into the 70’s. The rooms alone were two star, need updating and better bedding (you must ask for an extra pillow or two to sleep).
Cannot fault the hotel. The room was very good and the service was excellent. The breakfast had a fantastic selection and the hours opened was very convenient. It is located close to the centre. Would recommend
This was the most friendly and helpful hotel experience I've ever had in my life. Every single person behind the front desk whether am or pm shift litteraly went above and beyond . I will be returning to Iceland and I will be staying at hotel island again. Also great prices on food and drinks. Thanks everyone
Rooms are tiny and no real toiletries to speak of. They did include a kettle coffee and tea. Breakfast is good. The front desk has a bit of an attitude depending on who is there. You have to pay to use the gym (??!!) So might as well walk the 20 minutes to Reykjavik City centre to get your exercise in. Some decently priced food around the corner of the hotel (mulakaffi restaurant) with a lot of food and all you can eat soup, salad, bread, coffee and tea.
It's an ok hotel, nothing special but seems clean and tidy. There are always things you can pick fault with but as a base to explore it's fine. Little bit of a walk from main city but not too far. Staff seem friendly and helpful. Would like to see one of the updated rooms but you don't come to Iceland to sit in the room!!
A nice hotel only let down by the distance from the city centre of Reykjavik. It is about a 25/30 minute walk, which is likely no problem in the summer, but due to the changing weather wasn't that much fun! Although you are able to see parts of the City you might otherwise miss.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious, whilst the hotel reception is stylish, comfortable and the staff especially welcoming. The hotel bar and restaurant were superb, especially the lamb steak. The included continental breakfast was, again, superb. Plenty of options for hot and cold dishes, which was great when you need a hearty breakfast before a day of traversing Iceland's sights. The only downside to the breakfast options was the tea! It was ok. But not a patch on a proper English teabag. All in all a lovely place to stay if you don't mind walking into Reykjavik proper.
Make sure to include the spa services in booking, very relaxing hot tub and pool. The sauna is great along with gym facilities. More variety would have been nice for breakfast and dinner but nevertheless it is what it is. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Special thanks to Ryan to helped us greatly.
Good location and close to a few nice restaurants. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was decent and rooms were clean and tidy. Best to bring your own toiletries as none were provided.
Excellent staff. Very helpful. Good breakfast buffet. Nice rooms. After getting our bearings, realized hotel closer to city centre than first appeared. Would go again.
- Received a dated room with a toilet that was modified for someone with mobility issues so was a bit awkward considering we didn't ask for anything outside the norm.
- No tea or coffee was included in the room.
+ Comfy bed and pillows although the pillows were quite thin. You'll have to fold or use two to get the feeling you're even laying on one.
The ground floor is quite modern compared to the rest of the hotel or maybe just our room.
Don't get why there were two single duvet covers when the bed is a double bed.
+ Breakfast was the usual continental with eggs and cereal options.
- No WiFi signal in the room either. Had to either go to the hallway or ground floor for service.
- No satellite channels as advertised. Just news and some 2 other random channels.
- Staff in the restaurant weren't very proactive. Lots of standing around talking and even drinking from the bar.
- Expected a bit more for the money paid but it was just average. Weather was not the best and would have been nice to stay indoors in a comfortable room and chill for a bit.
Good value for the money, great breakfast that sets you up for a day of hiking or sightseeing. Important to have a rental car as the hotel is not in the walking distance of the downtown Reykjavik.
Staff were lovely, polite and very helpful, amazing use of the English language you actually forget it's not there primary language, breakfast was lovely, continental doesn't shove to many options in front of you, a choice of croissants jam marmalade and cranberry sauce, different cold cuts like salami and ham a nice sliced edam, a few different cereals, different breads for toasted (my favourite was a soda bread with pumpkin seeds) and hot foods like scrambled eggs one mixed with bacon the other on its own, hash browns boiled eggs, and grilled tomatoes. Lovely selection of teas and a gorgeous hot chocolate, also coffee on tap.
The rooms where small but really well presented with an exceptional view and a communal balcony on each level, the water is extremely soft here and drinkable, and the guys and gals at the desk are very helpful guiding your places to visit on a map. All in all absolutely pleasant and will definitely visit again
The appearance of the hotel is lovely, however during our stay cleaners were non existent and upon arriving found a hole in the bed sheet and a hair. Walls are paper thin too and can hear everything next door.
Breakfast is standard, nothing to be excited about. But overall, a decent hotel as you're out most of the day in Iceland.
Good location, easy free parking. Upgraded to superior room which was huge & recently refurbished. Would recommend.
Don't come here. If it is something your travel agency/groupon/someone else gives you request a change of hotels before coming to Iceland or change your agency/groupon. The rooms are majorly outdated. For the same rate you can get a suite in Höfn at a much nicer hotel. TV doesn't work, shower has no pressure, the rooms are small. On a side note we left our room to come back 2 hours later with a mysterious yellow liquid in our sink that we didn't leave behind. The only soap/shampoo is the all in one stuff that is stupid cheap.
Love the country, not this hotel.
An excellent hotel for the money, service was exceptional and staff was very friendly, not to mention the beauty of the city and country
Not yet fully renovated. Older rooms look more like from the 80's. For the rest, clean an d comfortable. 20' walking from the city centre.
Hotel ísland offers a small menu that is quite expensive.
The price of the burger there is almost double for the price of a good hamburger in Reykjavik.
The burger itself is good if it is not overcooked like mine was last time I went. Fries were good but they were few compared to the price of the meal. Would recommend to try this place.
But other places will give you more for the money and even a better meal half the price.
Service was bad also. We sat down and waited for 15 minutes for someone to take our order until we went to the counter and ordered it there. Note it was not busy at the time. Staff was friendly and helpful though.
Pros:
Good meal if cooked correctly.
Close if you are staying at the hotel.
Cons:
Expensive.
Lack of management on sevice.
Huge beautiful rooms, friendly helpful staff. Comfortable beds and decent breakfast. Staying two more nights and looking forward to it. Love the shower
My sheets smelled a little funky, which was my only complaint. But that could be attributed to the natural sulphur in the water. Breakfast was good and rooms were nice.
Excellent for one stay. The staff was jolly and polite. The rooms were quite big. Would consider book there again if visiting Reykjavik.
When checking in, we were allocated to a first floor small room overlooking the car park. A little sleep deprived and considering this was our honeymoon I got a little upset (especially after reading some people got upgraded without asking and it wasn't high season). My husband kindly came down to the reception and explained the situation and hurray, we were upgraded to a top floor room and oh my, it was a superb room! Thanks to this, it made our trip very special. The breakfast has a lot of choices and the reception and bar are inviting. We didn't get to experience the spa but it looked good. The staff was friendly and very professional. The toiletries provided are very good. It is however a trek from the city centre but we don't mind walking and we were very lucky with the weather.
Friendly staff, Clean, good breakfast. But our double bed duvet was two single duvets? Maybe it's an Icelandic thing?
The remodeled spaces are great! The older spaces are so so at best. We were in an older room.
Great breakfast included. Cleaning could be way better. Duvets were to small but the beds were good. Friendly and hrlpful service. Good location.
Stayed in the hotel for 4 days and 5 nights a warning to who ever stays here when going out make sure all valuables are either in the hotel safe or on you like jewellery and money..
When me and my fiancé 1st arrived we were taking our money and jewellery with us and everything was ok until the day before we came home ,we visited the blue lagoon mineral spa and prior to us leaving my fiancé took her jewellery off and left it in a paper bag that had gifts in it in our room, when we got back a few hrs later she had noticed her bag was touched that had the jewellery in it when she checked she noticed a very expensive crystal ring had been stolen and the police were informed.
So my advice to whomever stays here take care of you valuables if need be lock them in the rooms safe keep wallets purses etc on you at all times don't leave them in the room while cleaning maids are about in the mornings..
The hotel boasts a modern reception area with on-site cafe/restaurant. As you move up into the hotel it is quick to see that refurbishments were only to the reception. With that said the rooms were nicely maintained however were very much stuck in the 90s. The staff are very nice, approachable and very knowledgeable. The hotel was kept very clean and for the money we paid we had a very good time and enjoyed it thoroughly. Wide selection for breakfast made my mornings very hard when deciding what to have, however it ensured everybody was catered to.
