After reading all the reviews, I was hoping for a better experience. Once you get past the rudeness, and intolerance, and apathy of the staff, and have shaken your frustrations off, the experience is not all that bad. I was lucky enough to get the last fusty cabin so I didn't have to line up and wait. They give you large enough modesty aprons, which you're supposed to wear except when you're in the steam room or sauna; then you have to turn them round and sit on them.
When you enter, at first, the acrid smell of bodies, heavy air and perhaps sulphur hits you and makes your eyes smart, but you soon get used to it. My advice would be to go there on same gender days so that you can relax completely without needing to think much. All in all, I spent about 2 hours and found it relaxing and I felt refreshed once I was out.
I'm not sure how medicinal it all is these days but for tourists it's something you need to say you've done. I met lots and lots of locals while I was in Budapest but none of them had ever been to a thermal bath.
These are great quality baths. The interior is very beautiful and unique. The changing rooms are clean and modern.
The baths themselves are small, but as long as you don't go during a very busy time I think you will be able to enjoy yourself. The 5 pools, hot room and steam room are all right next to each other and you can easily get from one to another without walking for 5 minutes to get from one or the other. It feels very cozy and intimate and the water is truly very relaxing.
I would highly recommend these baths over other bigger baths.
Loved the saunas, steam room, roof top pool, 4 different temperature indoor pools, a huge swimming pool - all very clean and relaxing. Easy to spend a whole day here. The cafe is basic but does offer reasonable beer and food. The only reason this has lost a star because although the day sessions end at 10pm, the Turkish Baths were drained at 8pm, so we missed this because it is not advertised that it gets closed earlier and we were not told.
When there is a line to get in, the ladies working the front seem overwhelmed and are not very cordial to first-time visitors. I highly recommend reading all the signage (posted in English) so that you understanding the pricing for the various pools, rentals/deposits for a swimsuit if you don't have one, etc.
All of the facilities are nice, whether the renovated Turkish baths on the ground floor or the newer sections above. The locker rooms are mixed but there are private changing rooms available. The floor can get dirty, not excessively so but I would recommend being slippers/flip-flops
If I were to do this again, I'd definitely go on a male-only day in hopes of it being less crowded and noisy.
The Rudas Baths is a good option if you want to go for a spa day in Budapest.
We chose the all-inclusive option (4800 HUF, their website is old). We enjoyed both the modern wellness and the older steam baths.
In the steam baths it was "men only" on our day (Wednesday), which meant you were supposed to wear an "apron" only (really short, kinda funny). It's really special to enjoy the baths in Eastern style, it's a beautiful building. There is a small steam-room and sauna in here as well.
In the wellness-part you were supposed to have swimwear. This part is modern and you can enjoy sauna's and baths. My favorite bath was on the rooftop, where you have a spectacular view on Pest.
