Beds and sheets were more stained and unappealing than any hostel I've been in. I paid for a bed, had a shower, peeked in, gagged at the sight, and slept the night in the car. Try the ACC clubhouse, drive to the ACC hostel in Lake Louise, or even get out to one of the ACC wilderness hostels. Anything's better than staying here.

AC not working, front desk told me to set a towel cause it is broken. Train tracks right behind hostel with train going by every hour which was not mentioned. Will not go back again.

Great location! Great hostel! There was 6 beds in our dorm and a washroom. The hostel was pretty quiet but it is located right need to the railway so if you are a light sleep bring ear plugs or they can be bought for a dollar at the front desk. The entire hostel shuts everything down at 10 pm and locks it with gates. So arrive before 10 pm. The dorm rooms were quite hot for the majority of the night with no air conditioning. Everything about the hostel was very clean was very impressed with how clean the room and washrooms were.

Pretty good find in Canmore! Generally clean and luckily we had amazing bunk buddies from Germany and Poland.

Clean, tidy and comfortable. The only thing is that the staff is not very helpful most of the time. For example when I was asking if I could add another night, the girl at the front desk didn't even look it up and just sayed that they are full. I checked online later and there were still places available.
What I really don't understand on the other hand is why so many people rate bad because they had to put the linen on their beds. This is a hostel and not a hotel and so it's actually good when you get a bag with linen when checking in, because that indicates that they are clean.response / report this review -

Spent a couple days here in the summer. It was so hot I decided to spend my last night sleeping in my car rather than the hostel. I understand no AC but the temp was over 30C inside with no fans. Place overall wasn't the cleanest. I feel like I'd get better amenities camping :(

I know that many people are using the review version in an unfair way, by giving big critisism on points that seem to be peanuts. This is why I want to point out that I am not one of them. However, I believe that a price of a product you buy should always meet the advantages the product gives for a consumer. At the Hostel Bear I discovered that this might not be the case.
First the manager talked to me because he thought that I didn’t do my dishes (This seems to sound silly but it got even worse), which was not the case. He started saying that he will show me his video records as prove (All common areas of the facility are video controlled). In the focus of this argument was one tiny bowl. In the end, it proved that he was wrong. At least he apologized, anyway it seems that he has too much time, when he is able to klick through his video surveillance while working. On the other hand, he could have used this time much better to clean the hostel. And it really would have needed this extra time of cleaning. As he only has 2 employees, processes are not very efficient and sometimes only insufficient completed. However those two people are really friendly, nice and they always supported a customer friendly environment. That’s why I am kind of sad that all other circumstances lead to this very bad summary. The worse part was as I gave my room key to a friend, who just went away for a short roadtrip, but already stayed at the hostel for over a week. The manager saw this and made big trouble, mainly because on person used the hostel facilities without paying for it. As I already had an apartment to stay I immediately left the hostel as the manager instructed me to do so.
I payed 175 Dollars all in all it was a pretty big lack of service and customer friendliness. Last but not least it was even a problem that it was after checkout time, despite I had booked for another 6 nights. 35 CAD seem to be too much if you consider service and cleanliness.
I can understand the problem the manager had, by sticking directly to his rules and regulation. But he shouldn’t forget that I was a paying customer while he instructed me to left the hostel.
All in all I was very angry, not only wasting time by arguing with him but also that he wasn’t able to stick to the rules a good host always should follow.
Ok I should make a point now:
Wow I am pretty surprised that I wrote such a long text about something that isn’t worth of being mentioned again. In a way this only shows how angry I am, about a thing that never had happened to me before. This one star above is reserved for the two great employees, working at a place where every hope is lost. To say it short and simple: I really can’t recommend staying here.response / report this review -

Cool facility and great private rooms! Everything was clean and the staff friendly. Only downside is the train is pretty loud on the west side of the building. Would definitely stay again.

Awesome hostel. Always clean and tidy. The common areas/lounge are very comfortable. Only complaint is that there is no hand soap in the bathrooms.

So impressed. A party of five comfortably shared a private room. We had our own bathroom, shower, lockers, fireplace and lots of room. There were two single beds and two doubles.
The room was clean, staff friendly and price affordable.response / report this review
