Just an update on my Kentucky trip at the end of this month. People have been wondering which Breeding Farm I will be at.
Unfortunately the bearer of bad news I will no longer be shooting the video commercial at the Thoroughbred Breeding Farm down in Lexington (which was going to be filmed at "Taylor Made Farms"), as this has been cancelled due to the colt that was originally scheduled to be filmed in the video is no longer available. So I will not be hauling any of my video gear down there except my action cam - that right there cuts my gear right in half which is nice.
So instead of two carry on's and a luggage, I will now only need to bring one carry on and a luggage. Less is always better, even as a travelling photographer. As much as any travelling photographer would love to bring all of their gear with them, it's just not practical for many photographers so you have to make sacrifices.
The great news is that my journey to the back side of the Breeders' Cup is still on. I just hope it doesn't rain like it did at the Kentucky Derby. As much as I would love to have it, I will not have access to the infield (this is where I took 85% of my photos from the 113th Annual Millarville Race on Canada Day), so I will be putting my focus on candid and nailing the moments you rarely see captured in the horse racing world. And of course I will get my share of action shots from wherever I can and obviously I will be looking for that highly coveted money shot but as expected it's going to be incredibly tough.

Enjoy the new announcement with Jonathan Field and I. Here is a prime example of two opposites on camera - Jonathan being a magnificent speaker on camera and myselfwell obviously I shine much more BEHIND the camera than on it. :)
I've worked with several professional speakers in my life and they all make it look so easy. Speaking on camera is a valuable (but very challenging) skill to gain. I can proudly say that Jonathan Field is another stellar speaker on camera added to the list that I've worked with.
I couldn't have asked for a better and more genuine individual in the equine industry to work with. Thanks again Jonathan and I look forward to what we have planned - this is going to be magical.

2018 has been a very busy year for weddings. But again it's weddings, what year isn't busy for couples getting married? So far this year I have been asked by 14 couples if I would photograph their wedding. I politely declined on every one of them. Why? It's not my field of work. That and it's not where my heart is at.
Having a REAL passion for the subjects that you shoot means everything. When you have that desire, it's amazing the lengths that you will go to, to get your end result. But when you don't have that love for what you shoot, it becomes a real struggle. Passion is king.
I am not one to just accept every job that comes my way. If I feel that I can't deliver nothing less than stellar work, then I will not do the job because I am up front with my clients and at the end of the day, I want to see them have the best product in their hands. After all, it's all about your client being blown away with the finished product.
As much as I would love to help everyone out and provide them my services, I know that as a photographer and videographer that it's a MUST to have your NICHE and your TARGET MARKET.
This would also be the reason why I declined on photographing the 2018 Miss Rodeo Canada Pageant Alumni a few months back, because studio portraits is not my specialty. It was years ago but I've stepped outside of the studio and straight into mother nature's light.
In terms of my videos, in the near future when you see me shoot straight documentaries, I will still be using many components of my studio equipment but in indoor settings like barns.
Now that brings me to my conclusion. Even though I will not photograph a wedding, my Equine Portraiture service still caters perfectly to married couples, and soon to be married couples in the horse world with life time photos with your horse(s). :)

UPDATE: Unless something comes up, my trip to the Breeders Cup is still on! :)
Just a FYI, my trip down to Lexington, Kentucky on Tuesday Oct 30th unfortunately could be changing.
The good news is that the video that I will be shooting down there for a Thoroughbred Breeding Farm is still happening (on Halloween Day). This is going to be such an experience for me, I cannot wait for this!
Back up plans when travelling are a must for me and why I never travel to any destination without a Plan B because the last thing you want is to find yourself in a location with endless amounts of time to kill. Always expect the unexpected. So I have been working on a Plan B over the past couple weeks, hoping to get it finalized this upcoming week.
I just may cut my trip to Kentucky short and make my way down to Arizona after.

My first year photographing jumping is donewell technically 11 months but let's just call it a year since the big events of the year are done.
So where do I go from here? Expect to see me at one of the FEI Shows in 2019. Which one that will be is still to be determined but my dream would be the Nations Cup in Dublin Ireland. I am looking to take my adventures on the road, this was always my goal from the get go.
If anyone would like to chime in with their input on any of the international FEI shows, please do!
This is one of my very first photos that I took last October photographing jumping for the first time at Spruce Meadows in the warm up ring. At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about this discipline but thanks to some coaching from a couple amazing individuals in the English world, I was able to make some pretty big strides in a very short period of time.
I knew that with my vision in the photographic world, combined with the help and expertise from experienced jumping coaches that there was great potential to be had. I definitely would not be where I am today if it wasn't for them.
Perfect photo? Not by a long shot, but this photo set the path for me in terms of my learning.

Well that was quite the change looking back at what I was doing exactly one year ago today to now. Completely different environments and industries, but my skills and experience all carried over.
I wanted to get out of the studio and corporate setting and move into the equestrian world working with the most amazing creatures on earth in natural settings.

Well I FINALLY have an official answer for all of you to a question that I have been asked a lot over the past 6 months. Do I have a drone and if not, is this in my plans in the near future?
I have been wanting to add this tool to my Equine Videography for about 9 or 10 months now, I was just unsure on which route I was going to take. Do I get myself a drone, get licensed as a UAV pilot or do I hire someone else who is already there, been there and done that, to provide me this service and someone who is already a hundred times the skilled pilot than I ever will be?
It was a very tough decision as just a few weeks ago I was this close to enrolling in a 3 day, 20 + 20 hour UAV pilot course to get certified but instead I have opted to join forces with a good friend of mine who is a skilled drone pilot and has actually built drones before, to provide me with this service for when I need it.
The drone that will be used is a DJI Inspire 2 Professional which is currently the best drone out today.
I have flown drones before and am familiar with them but admittedly I have also crashed them a few times to it's near fatal death, so I think it's safe to say that UAV pilot skills is not my specialty. :)
To get really good at drone videography, it requires many many hours of practice, hours that I unfortunately do not have the time for. But perhaps the biggest reason why I chose to partner up with an aerial videographer is because logically in terms of productivity, it makes the most sense. Many videographers today team up with drone videographers because when on location shooting, the videographer films the on the ground footage while the drone pilot films the aerial stuff. This saves a significant amount of time for both the company and the client. After all you can only be in one place at a time.
This will not be a stand alone service but rather an additional tool (by request) to be used in my Equine Videography service.
There are so many creative ways to capture the beauty of horses with drones and I can't wait to see where this takes us.

I ended up going to the 'Masters' on just the Sunday due to having to finish up the past two shows earlier in the week, however the Sunday I wasn't feeling all that well, so I knew that I wasn't going all out.
Instead I just focused on adding a few more pieces to my portfolio of types of shots that I currently lack and I just worked off two jumps - I wanted the crowd and I wanted the clock tower.
In other areas, close but no cigar, but for me close is not good enough.

I mentioned earlier that my Equine Videography service is going through expansion, as I will be adding a third component to the service, a component that I once included in my original business plan last October but I ended up leaving it out. Well it's being put back in because people have asked for itand that is RAW video.
I haven't finalized all the details yet but this third component will for the most part be at shows and events and as expected, across all disciplines. It offers a much different side to my business as it is a fresh and new option.
I covered the video aspect at the KWPN Keuring Inspection this past Friday out in Parkland County AB while Natasha D. Goodship took care of the photographic side of things.

I launched my Equestrian profession 11 months month ago from today. Along the way, I have learned MANY VALUABLE LESSONS, lessons so meaningful that I do not ever take them for granted. Had another great sit down session with Grant MacKinnon this afternoon. It's very exciting what he has in store and I am honored to be a key part in helping him and the Canadian Association of Equine Dental Practitioners get there.
As much satisfaction that I get from educating myself in life, I get even more enjoyment when I share my knowledge and expertise with others in assisting them achieve their goals and put their plans into action.
Grant is truly one of the best in the horse world. :)

Spent the day yesterday in Claresholm, AB with Paula Johnson and Julie Parsonage on a trail ride working around cattle.
This was my very first experience taking pictures from the saddle and this would be a PERFECT ideal situation for when a compact camera would really shine, one that doesn't weight 4lbs. :)
Thanks again Paula for the wonderful hospitality. Taking pictures in direct sunlight is not my preference but I at least got a photo of these two ladies with their horses for them to keep. The horses names (from left to right) are Skipper, Peppy and Shrek.
When we arrived at this rock, I wish I had my flash, stands, reflectors and perhaps a helper with me because there are so many things you can do in this exact location to modify that harsh sunlight but hey this was just for fun.

Hanoverian's and more foals are coming to my portfolio this upcoming week and I am back at Old's College!
Hanoverian's are a breed that I am very new to but I have been getting myself up to speed. In just a few days, I will be at the Mare show and Inspection held by the Western Canadian Hanoverian Society.
I was at this arena back in March when I was taking pictures of the riders on Presentation Day for Horse Racing Alberta. I immediately fell in love with this arena because for one it had sufficient lighting and two the skylights created nice soft open shade consistently throughout the arena.

Three or four months ago, I made a public post indicating that in 2019, I will be working with a well known name in the horse world.
Do you remember this person? Or I should say "soon to be announced" person. Well this individual is passing through Alberta in the next month and I am very excited to be making an official formal announcement with this individual some time over the next 4 to 5 weeks on Facebook Live discussing our plans in the works for 2019.

Just over a week from today I will be at my second inspection show shooting video for the riders at the KWPN Keuring show being held at Valley Field Farms in the Edmonton area.
A few weeks back Natasha D. Goodship from Goodship Media contacted me wanting to team up and was curious if I would be interested in covering the video services for this show as she is covering the photographic side.
Even though right now my Equine videography services are primarily marketing and documentary videos, I still had immediate interest. When I was writing my business plan last October, I had another video service in the works and that was shooting raw video of riders at shows. Nothing fancy, just clean, high quality, simple, unedited video.
However, I ended up leaving this service out as I felt there just wasn't a market for it. But if the demand is there after I do this Keuring show, then I may just be adding it as a third component to my Equine Videography service.
You will most likely still see a few photos from me as I will have my other cameras with me as I know there will be photographic moments that I just can't pass up.

I am so envious of people who have that ‘photographer’s eye’ that is needed to take good pictures. I do not have it. I had asked Steven to take some pictures of my horse and I outside on the grounds where I board. I posted one picture on my Facebook page and was inundated with compliments!
Steven was able to capture the joy of the moment and even a little something extra. When I look at the picture now I see my horse in a different light, a wild light, an independent light. While she is my horse and I am her partner, her stance and the look in her eye reminds me that she retains a wildness of her own and a yearning for freedom, which was apparent in the picture. It hearkens back to a time when her ancestors ran free. Thank you Steven for showing me another side of my horse.response / report this review -
