This is the real deal. By far the best sushi in Nanaimo. Great atmosphere, excellent service and prices. Did I mention the BEST sushi in Nanaimo? Good. Because it is. By far. Not by a little.

The first time we visited this restaurant was about 10 years ago and I had horrific stomach cramps and was very sick immediately after. My husband and I decided to give it another chance on Sunday, August 13, 2017 for lunch and the same thing happened again to both of us. Food presentation and taste was great both times, but we can't take a chance getting sick again so won't be back.

As we get settled in to Nanaimo life, we once again fall victim to our regular cravings.. this time, for sushi!

We thought we'd try out Bistro Taiyo based on recommendations from a colleague.

It's a cute space in a great downtown location.

We started with some Potato Croquettes which were on special and quite tasty, and some crispy chicken skin, which was terrific. You get a huge portion for your dollar, too.

We followed that up with an order of the mixed tempura, which nets you prawns, yams, broccoli, asparagus and pumpkin.

The tempura is great and crispy, though a little bland. The pumpkin is the standout.

Sushi wise, we had some mixed salmon and tuna sashimi. The salmon was not great but the tuna was tasty.

We tried 4 rolls, all fairly simple, and they were all a bit underwhelming. The spicy tuna roll was very uneven and I managed to get a piece with no spice whatsoever.

All in all, it wasn't a bad meal, and you get ample food for your money, but it doesn't rise much above the median.

    Service was acceptable.

I will still be back to try some of their non sushi dishes, and eat some more chicken skin.

Above meal with two sodas was $64 including tip.

This is the best place to go to lift your spirits. In my experience, it is much better than Nori's. Why? More peaceful and always good music playing- usually lovely jazz. Nori's is too frenetic. Absolutely the best place but Sushi Tomo is coming on. However, (ST) are hampered by there lack of ambience. Bistro Toiyo in the plaza off Wesley is a wonderful space.

I go weekly. Sushi is beautifully crafted. Always fresh. Service fast. Staff all are friendly and speak admirable English which to a person is their second language.

My favourite sushi restaurant in town. Although the location is small, I've never had a problem getting seated, even if it's at the counter when packed. I've had the opportunity to try several of the lunch specials and many different sushi combinations, sashimi, and rolls. The lunch specials are delicious and come in several large portions. The staff are friendly and efficient. Always a pleasant experience coming here!
