This place is absolutely disgusting. This company should be ashamed of themselves. To pay these prices and not even be able to use a somewhat semi clean bathroom is appalling. You can smell the washroom from 30 feet away and it’s OUTSIDE. This is what we pay for?

All the ferries are always late or canceled I was on the ferry for 3 hours comming from Nanaimo. It's just ridiculous trying to make it somewhere on time and never being punctual .

We took the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo ferry on August 25th at 5:20PM.
From the get-go, there were plenty of things that could have been done better by BC Ferries. We were travelling (on foot) with our cat.

First issue, at the Horseshoe Bay ticket desk, a young guy named Quentin (sp?) was friendly enough but when we asked about what deck to proceed to with our cat, he replied: "oh, any of them are fine, as long as your cat is in a carrier" My husband and I both knew this could not be correct as we had taken ferries with our cat a couple of times before. We asked again and was told again, "no problem, just keep the cat in it's carrier"!!! There was a long line-up of waiting passengers behind us so we left that area.

We then stopped at the nearby reception window and were "greeted" by a VERY rude woman with light reddish hair (NO name tags, which is common with BC ferries) and asked again about where to go with our cat, to find the pet area on board. She was loud, surly and unhelpful and just kept repeating: "follow the red lines, follow the red lines".Hard to believe that BC ferries can't do better than this. She shouldn't even have a job, based on the totally unacceptable way we were treated.

At this point, we were all exhausted after a long day of travelling, but took her "advice" and went to follow the RED LINES. AGAIN, this was not the correct info. After walking and walking, with our cat and other luggage in tow, we could see that the red line was leading to a passengers only area and not the pet area/car deck we needed to be at.

Finally, we noted some people with pets, waiting patiently to board the ferry while a stream of cars were allowed on first. Along with the several pet owners was also a woman with a tiny baby in her arms, someone on crutches..WHY can there not be a break in the cars coming on board occasionally to allow for passengers with pets, babies etc, to get a chance to safely board, instead of waiting and waiting in the exhaust fumes while people sit comfortably in their air conditioned vehicles! This is just crazy!!!

There are "lulls" in the car traffic coming on board, a crew member could easily take out a stop sign and allow a 5 minute break for the foot passengers to safely board, while the cars wait a brief time to continue to load.

The final "icing" on the cake, the suitcase we had put in the checked baggage ended up being sent to another destination! We were then told by the receptionist there that this "happened quite a bit" and that we had mistakenly put our suitcase in the wrong luggage bin area. As they are side by side with limited signage (we didn't actually see ANY signage) as to the destination for the luggage being sent, we were then told that our suitcase had been tracked down and would not be available for pickup until the following day.

The only good thing, the woman who assisted us in Nanaimo was pleasant and efficient (her name was Michelle, which I found out afterwards by asking) although I didn't agree about the prominent luggage destination signage that we had apparently missed in Horseshoe Bay. We had been travelling extensively in the past few days and carefully checking for signage was getting to be second nature.

Speaking of signs, BC Ferries is very cheap when it comes to signage overall, which would make traveling with them SO much easier, especially for foot passengers and those with pets, babies, special needs etctheir own crew is often hard to find and as we encountered yesterday, too often lacking in proper training or manners, in a BIG WAY!!

A company like BC Ferries should not be taking advantage of people with this kind of poor service, simply because they are the only choice for ferry services in BC. It's not like they aren't making enough money to provide decent, consistent, friendly service. I would request a refund for this ordeal, but I'm guessing that would probably just take a lot more of my time and patience to try to get back any kind of compensation. :-(

Now you can't sleep in your car??!

And the safest place to smoke is the ocean right?! No smoking anywhere on a boat?!!!

We are totally going to lose European & Asian tourism.

I pay all that money for my car and I can't use it. So will there be free hammocks set up for automobile passengers? Free anything???

Not to mention families with kids sleeping. You are seriously going to tell a mother to wake-up her sleeping child.

    Wow.

For the price it wasn't bad but realistically it wasn't a great experience. First ferry we got wasn't too late but it definitely wasn't on time. However the return ferry was close enough to an hour late which definitely wasn't expected. The actual ferry itself was pretty good, and the waiting area at the terminal also wasn't bad.

Just a moneygrabbing monopoly that doesn't care about anyone or anything other than the $$. Tickets are double the price they should be, and they don't even care about being on time. Making a reservation costs you more than a normal ticket instead of less, what idiot came up with that idea? now we all have to show up two hours early and maybe, just maybe we'll make it on the boat. If not we have to wait another 2hrs to get the next sailing and it still costs us $80.

I prefer crossing to Vancouver Island at the Tsawwassen terminal, it seems a lot less hectic.

Today's experience was rather delightful. I was on the queen of oak Bay from horseshoe bay to departure Bay at 3pm. The staff were all very pleasant to deal with, I had a meal at the white spot cafeteria and the staff were very quick with fresh food, even saw the young man replace a lady's fries as they had to wait for a new batch for her husband and he insisted she take fresher fries. Constant clean up and hand washing was observed and I felt good about this fast food burger I was about to eat. Over all very satisfied. Clean, and friendly service goes a long way. Thanks for making my travel pleasant today.
