A very entertaining market place designed for tourists. You have restaurants, 700liquor, ice cream, baked goods, lots of different shops and even a small vendor section where u can buy handmade items and souvenirs.
If you are coming in to spend the day from a cruise ship - this review does not apply to you. In that case I would give this four stars.
If you are staying for an amount of time - read on.
I stayed in the area for seven days. I felt safe, met tons of friendly people, and had many great experiences. The area however is not the jewel it used to be. Some of the hotels and businesses have closed because of hurricanes in 2004 and 2016. It is a shame to see the cornerstone hotels on the beach, as well as local landmark buildings shuttered or in disrepair. I don't want to dissuade you from going, it's still a great place to go. The marketplace is clean and well kept. There are local sellers that will sell you souvenirs, restsurants, tours and boats as well as the beach and hotels in the area. The main problem if you are staying to vacation is the area just about shuts down if there are no cruise ships in that day. The marketplace has very little activity. There is usually a restarant or two open so you won't lack for food. During these times I recommend you find a tour, which you can book in the marketplace. This will take you to more exciting places. The locals can tell you when the ships will be in and you will find it more lively and most all the businesses will be open.
I have heard that this island is the safest and I felt that while I was there. People were friendly and easy to talk to.
I highly recommend the Wednesday fish fry!
Pretty much all the same merchandise with every vendor. My vendor pulled a switch on what I wanted to purchase and what she actually wrapped up when I was getting my money and not looking. I didn't notice until I got back to my shop and then it was too late. Just check your purchases of you do decide to buy!
It's touristy, like you would expect. Really great locals. Center of town cabbies disappoint. On the edge of town there's a better taxi stand. Ask for Marjorie. Super helpful. Saved our day!
Great fun, easy to walk locals are awesome and friendly. Good options for food and drink. Fun to be had,and memories waiting to be made. Trip of a life time. For your family or your loved ones.
Nice place, lots of places to eat, drink and shop. Stage for live music. After Deck was very nice, Pisces had very good food as did, Agave.
This was my first time visiting! The place is amazing as a visitor. Everyone was extremely nice. The drinks are off the hook. I'm also very into the food, and the island life. I really enjoyed myself and can't wait to have other experiences.
Fun and festive area to explore. Great and interesting food. Best place to get pino colata.
The shop between the Welcome center and John Bull has a vender named Charlene who makes phenomenally georgeous and unique jewelry out of indigenous materials. Absolutely unique products. Check her out.
Nice place. If it’s busy the vendors aren’t real aggressive. Bring your passport; if you buy jewelry there is no VAT tax (7.5%). NEGOTIATE EVERYTHING. PAY CASH. They prefer American dollars.
So much had changed over the years mostly for the worst. A lot of long standing businesses have closed down and most of the ones still in operation seem to be struggling. Even the feelings I once experienced had changed and the vibe is no longer there. I miss the old Port Lucaya with the laughter of children, the clutter of people walking about, relaxing and talking and the overpowering welcoming of businesses. out with the old and.. that's it!
Port Lucaya Market Place is very fun and welcoming environment for not only the tourist to walk around but the locals as well.
There are many different shops, bars, and restaurants that sell a wide variety of items, from things that you might be familiar to to unique souvenirs.
At night, Port Lucaya has Bahamian singers on stage performing along, with the man who limbos with fire. It is extremely lively at night, so don’t be afraid to start dancing on the dance floor.
Other than a lot of time share people trying to get you to visit there hotels this place was great You meet a lot of great people here and the smells are amazing.
Lots of little local shops. All the people are very friendly and attentive. The lady at the Oasis store was very helpful in helping us pick out some souveniers for our visit. Beautiful shops!
Nice local people running small shops and restaurants. Safe and easy walk from local hotels. On the water.
Quite a range here from stalls with locals hawking their wares (t-shirts) and services (braids/beads). Then there are high end clothing/jewelry/perfume shops catering to the yacht crowd in the marina. Same with fooddives to upscale.
Good selection of shops and restaurants and easy go get to. Feel like getting a Rolex? They've got a Rolex shop too! Amazing selection of both high end and just your normal nic knacky type vacation type souvenirs as well. Head to the port side and take a fishing trip or glass bottom boat tour. Lots to do in a small area.
A lot of shops. Nice place to just hang out. Daddy browns fresh seafood booth amazing experience
there's a chocolate place there, made from scratch, and also offers summer courses for kids. the Chocopino a cross between cappuccino and frozen chocolate. Heaven, you must try that!
Great if you're looking for a bar, or trying to buy a truck load of souvenirs in the middle of the afternoon. There's nothing else to do here. There are maybe 3 good restaurants, 1 ice cream shop, 1 over priced pharmacy. How many souvenirs can one buy? It's really just row after row of shops selling identical items. Good for a ten minute stroll. Everything closes by 6pm. Not worth visiting unless u really can't find a single souvenir t-shirt elsewhere.
It was amazing to walk through a Caribbean marketplace like this and have it be so empty. Freeport and Port Lucaya were not busy at all and therefore made for some great photos and shopping and dining experiences. The people were all very friendly! Eat at the little yellow fish shack that Daddy Brown works from right beside the marina amazing Conch!
Lots of fun if you are looking for a simple and affordable place to visit from your cruise ship. they have tons of taxis to get you here very cheap. The place is colorful and vibrant. street performers (bring some pocket change/cash) and people to do your hair, along with shops and places to eat. Go to the stand where they do the coconut drinks, they cut the coconut right in front of you! Our family had some great conch soup at Zorbas. The stores do have a lot of imported goods, but if you look around you will find hand-made local stuff, especially carved or woven goods. Bring a swim suit, a very short walk away from a free public beach (playa) . the beach wasn't crowded either.
I loved shopping here! Although some of the items didn't seem authentic, there was lots of do and stores to find homemade items too. Truly inspired by some of the talent in the Bahamas!
Cute little port shopping with a great beach only a black away! Easily access to transportation from here. This is a great little spot to do a simple shopping day or even find a bite to eat.
The locals are so sweet. Unless the price is out of the world, don't haggle. I was treated nicely with respect. And many times they gave me and extra bonus. No need to beg. Go back after dark for the open square night club and bars. Too much fun
Lots of great restaurants and shops in a very charming waterfront lagoon setting. Reasonable prices. Friendly service.
A nice little marketplace and a great place to spend a few hours. Most of the vendors are great and this is a great place to pick up souvenirs. Unfortunately there are very few locally made crafts, most are shipped in. But if you look you can still find some local items.
