Very good hostel especially in price/quality ratio. The double rooms are spacious and have their own mini fridge a sink and a table. The staff was amazingly helpful especially Joe! They provide you an Airport pick up for free witch is something worth some dollars. The only negative thing i can recall was the guy that kept making pressure on everyone to leave the kitchen as he always started to clean and store things away even before the breakfast closing hour.

Mostly a pleasant stay. What I found inconvenient though, is the lack of cooking utensils. if you want to cook you need to deposit your room key at the reception for a pan or a pot and you get the key back when you return it. The problem is they don?t have that many pans or pots and in peak time for cooking, you?d be lucky to get a pan or pot you want. Also, there?re only 2 chopping boards in the whole kitchen during my stay? Again, you can imagine how it wouldn?t work when it gets busy in the kitchen.
Another thing is, there is a recycling bin and organic bin but no general bin. I?m all for recycling and everything, but the recycling system in this place is not the best I?ve seen. I would recommend adding a general waste bin to the existing organic and recycling bin. Because otherwise people will throw everything in the recycling bin, which is what happens during my stay and it ends up being a general bin anyway. Same problem in the double room I stayed, only recycling bin, no general waste bin. I had nowhere to put my general waste. They need to put more thought into this.
The staff might also want to mention the cleaning time from 9am-10am in the kitchen when guests have no access to the kitchen. I mean this is a very inconvenient time to close the kitchen for cleaning considering it?s when many people are planning to make or have breakfast! There is a poster on the kitchen wall with small fonts reminding guests of the period when kitchen is closed but you hardly even notice it?s there. So give this a second thought, manager.
I recognize this is quite a new backpackers and they?re still figuring things out. Good part is, the staff are very friendly and the location is superb, close to supermarkets, 30min walk to the opera house, a few minutes walk to Kings Cross Train Station and everywhere is pretty much very clean. 24-hour reception is definitely a rarity among Sydney backpackers and will be highly appreciated. The staff can also help you with job hunting, tax return, tour and ticket booking etc for free.

Clean hostel. Clean kitchen - you have to exchange your key to use pots and pans so it was much tidier and cleaner than most hostels. Smaller kitchen and eating area though. 4 bed room was nice - lockers and mini fridge. Bathrooms were tight but clean. $3 laundry.

The jolly swagman Backpackers was by far the best backpackers that I stayed in during my 6 weeks in Australia. It is actually really clean (way better than any other hostel), everything is well organized and they put thought into all the operations. The staff care about the customers and even ask for ideas and feedback on how to improve the hostel. I was impressed at first, but even more so after going to other hostels that pale into comparison.

I've met some absolutely incredible people at this place, and after 2.5 months, I'm incredibly bummed to be leaving.

Pros: The other travelers (all down to drink/party, chill out and watch a movie, or adventure to the Blue Mountains, Shark Point, Manly etc.), the staff (can't say enough good things about Sam and Joe, and the cleaner Bahrat), the location (kings cross is a hell of a place to be a backpacker), the room size (I think an 8 person room is the biggest they come, but most are 4 person, and all for the same price).

Cons: The wifi (it's 'free', but really not all that usful), the neighbors (don't hangout in the park beside the hostel into the night. Even just chatting you will get yelled at).

Overall, I'd recommend to one of my friends to stay at this place. You're going to be hard pressed to not have a good time.

You better go out of your way to be nice to the management, even if they spontaneously through hidden fees at you. Otherwise you will be punished! Seriously though, they are lucky they have an endless stream of backpackers waiting to stay so they can act like children and still get business. Coming home from a long day out, seeing a roach in your room and hearing them go after people on the P.A. system about somebody who didnt clean a dish is not the right atmosphere to be enjoying the cross in.

This hostel is brilliant, the staff are friendly and always around to help. Kitchen/ bathrooms/ dorms are clean everyday and the common room has a Tv with great movies.

Met loads of great people and the evening events gets everyone involved. Fab place to come whether you're travelling solo or with friends.

Best Hostel in Kings cross, period, reception is extremely helpful, responsible. Free breakfast, basic but fits the purpose unless if you are a cooking fan or a veggie. be sure to grab their weekly offer.
Compared laundry and facilities to other hostels (i stayed in over 7 places). The swag man is 6$ in total, for washing and drying, yet, washing is 30 mins+, others had 15-20! for double the price! many subtle differences.

I have stayed in MANY Kings cross, Bondi backpackers. The Jolly swagman is the best. Simply speaking, the place is well managed and is laid back. The management tries always to help, they even help newcomers find a job really easily! reception CARES about issues.
lots of stuff and services are included in your booking. Good luck saving a 10$ a week to have a bed in a 12 man, items getting stolen, being forced to inhale weed or just in the shower beside couples having sex.

One of the best Hostels I have stayed in and I have stayed in alot. The staff was wonderful and got me out of the house so to speak and got active. Always had things for me to do and look around town. Night and day there were people there to help in every fashion that I needed. I recommended this place to anyone visiting Sydney. Had maps that helped me out alot. It was close to everything also as you can walk to Sydney Opera House in 20 minutes.

Do not stay here! They claim there's free wifi, this isn't the case. It does not work, they make you pay $5 per day for premium wifi, I bought it, and still it doesn't work.

Staff is relatively nice and there's a decent atmosphere. However, room is small, very smelly and extremely hot, bathrooms are pretty dirty, kitchen closes at 9pm. I think you can do better at a still affordable price. Stay elsewhere!

We happened to check-in this place at latenight around 1am. Unbelievably, there was someone at the reception at that point of time to help us. Great job! Room was so tidy and cozy for a backpacking accommodation has to offer. Had a relaxed hot shower in the morning in their common bathroom. It was so refreshing to start the long day ahead. While in check out, the person at the help desk willingly guided us with map and directions to the nearby attractions as we were new for the city. Loved this place. Will definitely go back when get a chance.

Lovely, clean place to stay. Very colorful. The people staying here seem more grown up than in Base, which means it's great if you want to actually sleep at night

The rooms were disgusting and no service at all. had to put the (maybe unwashed) sheets over the bed by myself and also to take it down. the floor was very dirty as the rest of the building. we had cockroaches in our room in the third floor. it was very hot outsideso it was inside because of no AC!
the "breakfast" fast only toast with butter (which was melted for 1000 of times before) and jam. Pay a little bit more and find a better place!
the receptionists (staff) were really nice (!!) and a good location with lot of restaurants and bars (unfortunately this was the only advantage)!

We arrived pretty late and needed to check out at 9am. That's pretty early. Besides that, the beds are squeeking and no airco.
We also think that the hostel needs to be more clean. To many buggs

Staying at the jolly swagman is a great experience although during summer the top floor rooms do get very warm with only a small fan for cooling. The hostel is very secure and has a great atmosphere

It was okay. A little rowdy and cold at night but it's a hostel not a hotel. You just can't expect the same kind of perks. The guys working the desk were helpful with questions and things I needed so no complaints there. There is 4 floors and no elevator so yeah, bummer. Overall the location had a lot of food options nearby and to get around wasn't that hard. Price is in par with what you get.
