I have never written anything bad and deliberately waited, but still feel as cheated now as a few days ago. We booked for Saturday lunch and arrived at 1. The setting is beautiful and the waitress charming. No menu given. The starter and main courses were surprises and dessert baklava. It was a summery day, so we asked for water - but could only get a glass full since all the jugs were in use (there were 8 tables). We waited an hour and paid R150 for 3 tasteless spinikopita, 3 slices each of dry seed bread and ciabatta, a ramekin of badly made hummus and taramasalata. Then the wait started - by 3 we were brought a bowl of butter beans cooked in tomato, but we could only eat it after 30 minutes, since there were no clean plates available. It should rather have been cooking for the time waiting for the plates, since the beans were only partially cooked - not pleasant! By 16h20 we asked for the bill and then suddenly the main course was ready to be served. We should rather have left, because the main was overcooked mutton served with couscous, pan fried tomatoes, a vegetable bake covered in a very floury roux and all swimming in a very sour black gravy. By this time our waitress had left, and the bit of service we had, gone. We got up and had to ask for the bill in the kitchen, which was gladly proffered - no explanation given, no excuses offered.
The bathroom of the house also doubles as the WC for the guests, but it is not neatened and only a small hand towel to be used by all the guests.
If one is tired of the restaurant business in JHB, do not think that a lovely setting in CT is enough to make up for tired food and service. Of course one does not mind a wait for individually prepared dishes (but not even then 3 1/2 hours!!) but this was a pre-booked fixed menu!!
The one star given was for the venue, which leans itself to be a potentially magnificent venue.
