We opted to cancel our last night in the Protea Hotel in Clarens to stay here the location is breathtaking, but these units are in dire need of upgrades and thorough cleaning! @ R1500 per night I expected something a little better.
The views are amazing, and it is really quiet. At the price you do have certain expectations though, and these were not met!

Situated in the Golden Gate National Park. Absolutely stunning views. Can be booked through Sanparks.
Huts are well equipt. Bring only your own food, wood and drinks. If you are not in a mood for preparing food, a restaurant is available.
The paved road is in some areas very steep. The Highland Mountain Retreat can be reached in any saloon car.
Awake early and enjoy the best sunrise. A vulture resturant is close by. Drive the scenic roads and enjoy nature.

Magnificent surrounding view. Good felicity base on the location of the accommodation. People intend to stay there need to be well prepared since it is quite a bit away from anywhere, but it is absolutely worth it. I went there twice, which one of it was the last trip with my late wife. She passed away a month later. So it will always be a special place for me.

The feeling of staying in a wooden cottage in the mountains is awesome.
The view is breathtaking.
Make sure you bring everything you need. No shop on the location.
The bed has a electrical blanket. A oil heater is available in the room. Plenty of blankets.
A fireplace with wood. If you still feel cold.
The kitchen is sufficiently stocked with equipment and even a microwave. A Weber braai outside.
Do not expect a clean, dustfree luxury place. It is a rugged log cabin.

The views were phenomenal and we saw lots of game. Loved the location and the fireplace. There were a few issues with the water but it was rectified relatively quickly

Love love love this hidden gem!! Breathtaking views. Friendly staff. Place is clean.
Only minor critique is that on the website it states there's DSTV when in fact there was only a flat screen tv with no reception, but you don't stay there to watch tv in any case

Impressed. Sanparks is on form. Only a few cottages, quite close together though. Weber braai, fireplace, stunning views. If you're fully loaded you're going to have trouble with an underpowered car getting up there.

Lors de la réservation sur le site web Sanparks, il ne restait de la place qu'au Highlands Mountain Retreat. Le prix semblait un peu élevé mais faisant confiance aux parcs nationaux sud africains nous avons réservé.

Nous n'avons pas été déçus

Malgré l'heure tardive (hiver), accueil efficace.

La route est excellente pour rejoindre votre habitation. Enfin, un jour sans trop de neigeSi tel était le cas, je suppose que les rangers vous aiderais.

Nous sommes restés trois nuits et avons connus tous les climats : grêle (impressionnant) , neige, pluie, grand soleil (chaud).

Les chalets tout en bois sont vastes, ben équipés et chaleureux. Cheminée efficace, surtout grâce à la dame qui approvisionne en bois chaque matin !

Et quelle vue !!!!

Promenades variées dans le parc.

Faites vos courses avant.. Sinon l'épicerie du parc propose des oeufs, des gâteaux, de la bière et du vin (c'est déjà pas mal)

This is the business as far as exclusive, secluded log-cabin mountain accommodation is concerned. I have stayed here twice in the last year and will be back many more times. This is hands-down my favorite place to stay in the Drakensberg. Log cabins are well appointed and maintained - exactly what you'd expect from a luxury cosy log cabin in the mountains. A 1 hour hike from the cabin puts you on top of the world surrounded by a wide range of wild animals and spectacular views. Remember to take with whatever you need as the nearest shop is quite a drive. Fog wraps these cabins easily and leaves you without a viewso don't expect crystal clear horizons most of the time.
