I took a tour here a few years ago and have been wanting to go back ever since. The tours are very informative and engaging. They treat you so well and the staff really knows their stuff. It's also nice that you can park so close to the front entrance.

Very interesting spot to tour. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the history of the penitentiary. The standard tour is handicapped and wheelchair accessible. There are special tours of different parts of the prison, at certain times of the year, that are not fully accessible, but it looks like they are very upfront about that. Be sure to take time to look at the exhibits in the small museum section of the visitor center. I have visited Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA, which is self-guided, and WV Penitentiary, and you get a much better look at and understanding of the prison and prison life at WVP.

It was a blast. The tour guide that I had knew everything about the penitentiary and had interviewed former prison guards and inmates to enhance his knowledge of the penitentiary. Not only did I get to experience getting locked up in a cell, but also experiencing what it was like to live as a convict in a maximum security prison. I would recommend to people who want to know more about the criminal justice system and how the WV state government continued to use the prison even though it was painfully obvious that the plumbing system was failing and that the way how prisoners were locked up violated the “cruel and unusual punishment” amendment. It is an experience that is very unique and you come out learning more about how our judicial system is actually practiced and prisons in general.

We did the haunted house for Halloween. Been here before but they've done alot of remodeling of their haunted house and they done a good job too. This is definitely one of the better haunted houses.

Went for the Haunted Tour. It was neat but at times just flat out too dark. Was not scary for me as an adult but had group of kids with us that were terrified. Ages ranged from 10 to 15. 10-13 year olds probably got the most scare. Would like to do a regular tour of the facility. Think that would be extremely interesting and probably garner a higher rating.

Went on an overnight ghost hunt. Had a very informative tour beforehand which helped identify places that may have had more activity. This was a very fun night!

Wife and I did the Escape Room this past Friday night. We had a blast trying to escape and the staff were awesome. On Saturday, The paranormal tour guide was full of creepy information about every part of the prison. During free time to roam, we sat alone in an empty, pitch black room and heard chains hit the floor right next to us. I got up to investigate, saw no chains, or people either. Tried to mimic the sound with my keys, but couldn't do it. Super creepy! Will return for the next Escape Room.

I was working in the area Easter 2017 and recognized this place from the TV show Ghost Adventures. Unfortunately the tours were closed that day, but the building is amazing to see, and also the Grave Creek Mound across the street is very interesting.

My friend and I came here as it's been a place on our bucket list for quite some time. The prices in the gift shop and the tours were very reasonable. We did the historic tour and our tour guide Donna was very knowledgeable about the history of the Penitentiary. It was easy to tell that she has spent some time learning about the facility. The tour lasted about 90 minutes total. Pictures were allowed in the Penitentiary, which I took lots of. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone interested in WV history, paranormal, or Gothic architecture.
