I have wonderful memories of Volkwein’s, dating back to when it was in downtown Pittsburgh, up the street from Horne’s. Then across the bridge to the Northside, and finally to its current location in the suburbs. It was noted for being able to identity music for customers who could whistle a tune. I did so for the “Toccata” from Widor’s Fifth Symphony and the clerk picked right up on it. I sill have that music.

A little confusing when you walk in but stay to the right. I went left the first time and folks in the office weren't very friendly. Once you are in the back the place is awesome. Massive supply of all things music and the guys at the service counter where great. Passionate and definitely knew their stuff.

Nice music store. Good service and great selection of instruments. Not willing to negotiate price. Their way or the highway. Arrogant because they are the only game in town and they know it! Made it difficult because they closed some stores outside Pittsburgh. Lengthy travel time which is an inconvenience.

I retired from playing professionally. Volkweins is assisting me in dissolving my current inventory. I have been fairly pleased with the progress to date, nobody ever gets what they think an instrument is worth, especially when sentimental value is attached.

I came to Volkwein's looking for a used viola and a second violin. The store was busy with other customers, but the workers handled everyone well and were extremely helpful. He grabbed a bunch of different violins and violas for me to try. I ended up having to leave before I could make a decision because I had to get to work, but I appreciated all the help and will definitely consider going back when I have more time and a better idea of what I'm looking for. Thanks for being so accommodating!

I took my French horn here for cleaning and repairs and am very happy with the results! Ted was extremely knowledgeable and was more than happy to explain how he fixed it when I asked him. I bought my horn used about a decade ago and it has NEVER looked or sounded this good!

Terrible past experience renting from this place which lead to a lawsuit they threw at us for not paying a rental fee after showing interest in buying out the instrument. No longer recommend this company to anyone, there's much more out there.
