The food is delicious and the people who work there are awesome
great place and SUPERB hosts, they do everything in their power to create the best experiences for the guests. Love it!
Food was excellent. We had a reservation for 6pm but it took 45 minutes to be seated. This cost to lose our other reservation after dinner.
Took over 30 minutes to be sat WITH a reservation. When seated, no apology was given. I do not recommend this place on a weekend, the service os very bad.
WooHoo! I finally found the best Sushi in Rochester :D
I have been to over 10 Sushi restaurants in Rochester searching for the best sushi or even good sushi and when I thought it was impossible to find, I found Umi!
What is best about Umi is the quality of their sushi, the freshest I have had in a very long time! In addition their roll selection is vast and very unique making it fun to order with friends. Not to mention tasty!
The ambience of Umi is spectacular and a reason to visit itself. They then take it a step further with the way they present their rolls; sometimes even using boats as serving platters.
Service is great and english is well received.
Lastly their prices are fair, especially for their portion sizes.
So today we called in around 1 and made a reservation for 6:30. We get in and they seem to have lost our reservation and the same girl who I mention later in the review says "oh well we weren't here this morning so it's not our fault " Which is completely unprofessional so we waited 15 minutes to be seated (granted not a long wait but still in inconvenient) so we were seated. Had a great meal with great food, their fillet mignon was awesome, they're hibachi chef Rex was funny and entertaining. So we leave and I get home realizing I left my purse at the restraint (also I should mention I'm a diabetic and in my purse was my reader and my insulin) so I call them and politely inform them that I believe I left my purse under the table where we were eating. The girl on the phone (the same one as the girl in the beginning of the review) tells me no one's turned it in so I request they go look because I remembered the exact location I left it. They respond by telling me they're too busy and they will call me back if they find it. I told them I was on my way in and that if be there soon if they could just simply look under the table and pick it up for me, they refuse and so I drive over their walk in and they tell me that they have it behind the counter. I look around and they only have 3 full tables (Not busy they also had three girls doing nothing but chit chatting about highschool upfront ) so I take my purse and request to speak to the manager. The older heavy set girl says they do have a manager in and she looks around behind her and then changes her story telling me that she's the manager. Which I know is a clear lie seeing how the first three times I asked she didn't say anything about being the manager. So all and all the food was really good and the chefs were great however the hostess's service was terrible and really frustrating considering we spend 150$ on our food.
Probably my second favorite Hibachi in Rochester.
Their sushi is great. I always enjoy myself. Great for groups.
I have always been a huge fan of Umi, mainly for how beautiful the interior of the restaurant is. I developed a good rapport with the owner Jason who made leaps and bounds on improvements to Umi since the restaurant first opened. It was amazing going to the restaurant, and being treated like a VIP. My date and I got seated immediately at the next hibachi table to get the dining experience started. Like I said before, the interior of Umi is SPECTACULAR, like an modern NYC flashy nightclub feel with a Umi Bridge/River. Now as usual the service is not that great, where getting a hold of your server always seems to be challenging. So I know better to order something ahead of time, even though I want to order it 10 minutes later.
DRINKS: top notch cocktails at Umi, they had a DRAGONS BOWL for $12.00, split for two. The Dragon's Bowl then gets lit on fire underneath ( of course I had one, and your date will be impressed too by the special effects of it). Other top cocktails are the Umi Special, and Umi Punch ( all tasted amazing, well balanced with liquor and juices). The Sake is equally amazing, both hot and cold. Plus my hibachi chef was VERY generous at shooting saki in my mouth at dinner. Ask for a Sake Bomb ( sake dropped in ginger beer, comes with its own show!!)
APPETIZERS: ALL of Umi's Appetizers really meet the mark for me. The Ika Naruyaki BBQ Squid tastes amazing, and I never had squid before in my life. It's sauteed so well with the BBQ sauce, I did not even think for a second I was eating Squid. Shrimp Shuma- Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were so tender that I wanted more, the sauce to dunk them in seals the dealsweet and savory.
SUSHI: Now Umi does have its own dine-in table area which is extremely elegant/fancy. Specializes in just kitchen/sushi orders. Were nice wooden chopsticks are the only utensil on the table (forks are asked for). There is also a sushi bar where you can see them make the sushi in front of you. I always order the Specialty Sushi, because each one comes with its own art design with flashy lights on your plate by the Sushi chef. Top ones are the- Baja Roll: Eel, Spicy Shrimp Crunch, Avocado, with Soybean Chef Special Sauce, Super Man Roll: Soft Crab Tempura, Spicy Tuna Crunch, Lettuce, Soybean with a Two Flavor Sauce, Umi Roll- Spicy Yellowtail Crunch Topped with Tuna, Salmon, Seaweed, & Salad Tobiko. ALL there sushi is made with top quality ingredients, and fish from the local Asian food markets.
HIBACHI: Alright on to the MAIN EVENT. For starters, 10 STARS for having an AMAZING/EXPERIENCED Hibachi Chef. The show not only impressed my date, but it impressed me as well. It comes with Onion Soup, BUT ask for the Meso soup cause it tastes ten times better. You can get the standard onion soup like that anywhere. UMI HAS THE BEST ASIAN SALAD DRESSING--thats right I said itTHE BEST, I can eat that stuff by the bucket. A balanced blend of ginger and sweet potato, compliments any salad. I ordered the Land and Sea: filet, chicken, and shrimp. The filet tasted amazing, and was extremely tender..the ginger sauce that came with it really complimented the steak. The chicken and shrimp, were equally juicy/moist which was complimented by the shrimp sauce. My date even caught the shrimp in his mouth by the Chef!! I missed a million times. The Fried Rice had a lot of flavor and seasonings, the egg in it does the trick. Here is where Umi looses a STAR, they DOWNSIZE and DOWNSIZE their portions for EVERYTHING every-time I come there. It's a shame because I still felt hungry after leaving the Hibachi table. The prices keep rising, and their portions keep getting smaller and smaller to the point as much as I love the restaurant, I might not be back. I can over-look the slow service of the wait staff, but not the under- portioning of the food.
The food is amazing and abundant. I only gave it 4 stars because if you try to make a reservation you always end up waiting a while after you were supposed to be seated beforw you are. Not the end of the world but in the moment kind of irritating.
This is our go to place when we are in town. Great Food! Great entertainment from the chefs.
Habachi is always fresh and fun. The Chefs try to get everyone involved so do not sit there if you want to be left alone! The owner is hands on and makes sure you are well taken care of. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh and the Rolls are delicious. BEST sushi in the region! Even my son who eats nothing enjoys the steak on the Hibachi!
Great Hibachi! Huge portions, never been able to clear my plate. Prepare to have fun and have a great time for the family.
