This place came highly recommended by a friend so we were eager and excited to try it. So we waited two hours to get in (which is fine) so once inside we were in the bar area until a table opened up. When we went to order and the bartender was annoyed that we didn’t know exactly what we wanted (eh so be it even though it was rude and unnecessary for him to be that way) then we proceeded to order a bottle of wine and cocktails and he goes “so since you can’t decide what you want then you all get waters, just waters” he began lecturing us on how he has the power to not serve us and belittling a member of our party. No one was too drunk or crazy so I got my card back and we left before ever having a drink. In this city there are thousands of bars why would I waste my time with a place that has zero customer service! Overall a poor experience.

Super cool little spot, cozy, felt like I was in the 1920's. Hour wait for party of 4 but we'll worth it. (They will text you when they are ready for you after you put your name in). Mixed drinks are $16 a piece but they are very tasty.

The mood is set from the moment you walk down the steps to the unmarked door below street level on this dimly lit section of West 17th Street. You ring the bell and the door is opened by a doorman, or in this case, a door woman.

We were led into the dark moodily lit space replete with deep leather sofa beds and molded copper ceiling. There were even sheer curtains around sets of couches. Making for a very sultry and intimate ambiance. Once seated at your booth, you can go through their extensive cocktail list on your own time. Once you've made a selection, you simply pull the little chain on the wall and a server comes to take your order.

The staff is incredibly helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The drinks are delicious and creative. The bar tender is outstanding and makes the best Old Fashioned I've ever had. I would go back to NYC just for another night of drinks there.

Very nice cozy place with fantastic decoration and great cocktails. The name is very ironic and you should Google it to know more. Or come over here and have a drink, on the menu you will have more details about where the name comes from :)

Absolutely amazing drinks and atmosphere. Drinks cost $16 dollars each, but they are very well made and well worth it. Only downside is that there is no real food served here.

Raines Law Room has been one of my favorite NYC speakeasys to visit over the years. The staff is friendly and not pretentious unlike some other places. There is usually a little wait after work hours when you ring the doorbell. Once inside you really do feel like you've stepped into another era and are in a secret apartment having illegal booze.

I've ended up standing in the back bar area more often than not, but have also gotten a couch on some visits. Getting a seat can actually be more awkward than standing if you are just two. The only seating are couches which face across from each other. Last time I was seated across from some 20 somethings making out who were hard to ignore.

Back to the important thing: the booze. The drink menu here is endless. There are pages of amazing sounding concoctions for you to chose from separated by theme (light, bourbon based, flowery etc) at $16 each. There is also a wine and spirit list for those who don't want cocktails. I don't really think you can go wrong with any cocktail here and for $16 you better not.

The only downfall here is the often slow service which doesn't match the drink prices. This place is tiny so it seems odd to me.
Overall though this place is worth a visit for the yummy drinks and the overall unique ambiance.

You will pretty much need a reservation after 7pm. Call ahead, and specify your requirements then (e.g., party-size and curtained booth request, as opposed to mere bar-drinking). If you remain polite and refrain from rushing the staff, they will be very kind and accommodating; I have only had pleasant experiences with them. I appreciate that you can summon your waiter from the table (buzzer), only when required. That way, you are guaranteed service when you need it, without the unwanted check-ups when you're deep in conversation with a friend (or lover).

Indeed, the setting is very intimate -- this is a darkly-lit, subterranean speakeasy with a prohibition-era montage and comfortable seating. The drinks are among the best made in the city, especially when you deviate from the menu and order the pure classics, instead (as I am often prone to do). This is one of the first lounges that I show people in the city.

Beautiful and very intimate. Perfect for a date or just a few classy drinks. On the more expensive side, at about $16 a dollars a drink, but they're top quality and you're paying for the experience.

Fantastic little speakeasy. It's pitch black so don't plan on getting much work done but it's a lovely, secluded little place. Highly recommend.

Amazing tasty food. Great service. Food comes out fast. No reservations, just show up waiting list. Always a long wait during normal dining hours. Consider making it a late 10:30 dinner if you know you're going to be in the area.

Best speakeasy I've been to. There is a long wait, but once you're inside, you're seated on a comfortable couch. The drinks have always been delicious. The staff are amazing. The price for their mixed cocktails are typical for Manhattan, but you also get a unique space to sip your drink in.
