Fantastic place for kids and adults. Free admission. Many great animals to see. You can easily spend a day here. Street parking is free or you can park at the zoo for $20 or so. Great panda bears area. Many learning areas for kids. Make sure to bring quarters and pennies if you want to make commemorative coins. Check their website for special events.

Bundle up and enjoy the holiday lights guiding the Zoo pathway. This is great for all ages. Warm up and enjoy the exhibit halls that are open. They even have hot chocolate & kettle-corn you can buy to help warm up. Admission is free. Onsite parking is overpriced at $22. Metro stations are also nearby. Would love a slow moving tram or train to bring folks back up that big west side hill & it would also be another wonderful way to experience the lights.

Went there this winter in December. They had this great light show going on and it was a first snow as well! So the whole thing was just amazing! So many light, decorations and even couple snow slopes;) small ones, for the kids👍 it was pretty cold outside and what I loved the most-they had this little stores with fire pits outside where you can make your own s’mores! Isn’t it cool? Great experience! We didn’t see much of the animals inside, mostly everything was closed already, we came around 7-8pm. But we were able to see elephant trough the glass doors and bunch of reptiles as well. Glad that we went. Amazing time, amazing zoo!

Went for the free Christmas light walk through a portion of the zoo. It is a short walk through the lights that starts at the main entrance and lets out on the side of the park. Forewarning, parking at the zoo costs $22. But there is neighborhood space around if you're willing to look. A little underwhelming and you have to walk back through the lights to get back to the front, or go around on the main street. They sell alcohol during the walk so that is a plus! Couldn't see any animals because it was dark out and they are all asleep. You do walk past the monkey area so there is a possibility! It is still a fun event, and free, so grab some friends and go!

Wonderful zoo, one of the best I've been to on 3 continents. There are towers above you where the orangutans swing between! A carousel for the kids, multi animal-themed of course. There's good food and beer, that's the adult-themed part I suppose. They have giant pandas and Asian elephants! Very impressive.

It's free to get in, although we did give a $5 donation, but still a great deal since there was 4 of us. It's a little worn, a little shabby, but it's still very nice. We really wanted to see the pandas since we don't have those in Texas zoos. The pandas alone were worth the trip to the zoo. There's the usual zoo animals, elephants, giraffes, monkeys. But they also have an indoor rainforest which was pretty cool. You walk through and see birds flying around loose through the trees. They also have a cheetah, which is a beautiful animal, but it was kind of sad to see it in an enclosed space unable to run like it was born to do. The wolf was a pleasant surprise. It's a beautiful animal but it was panting so much in the heat that I felt so sorry for it. Hopefully, the unseasonably warm weather ended soon after and he's more comfortable.

Beautiful in many ways! However it really needs to have new signage. It's very very confusing and there need to be bigger and better signs. I understand that it's cold and that's great, but try walking around with little kids makes it very difficult. Also I would like to see you more animals. Giraffes maybe Penguins Etc

Nice and well kept zoo! It's nice that's it's free but parking is pretty pricey at $22/car. Ideally you can metro in and save some cost. We started at the bottom of the hill because the first 3 parking lots were filled. Be prepared to walk A LOT! There are a lot of pretty neat animals that you don't see in a lot of zoos but everything is pretty spread out so you will be walking and then turning in to see animals. We were there for about 2 hours and that was all the kids ages 2-16 could handle. Didn't eat any food there but it was definitely a focus of the zoo, gotta make their money somehow since it's free I guess. The Orangutans were fun and everyone loved the pandas. My favorite was the prairie dogs ;o) Wish they had an app with the map since it was difficult to see where everything was exactly from their signs.

The National Zoo hosts an impressively diverse collection of animals in exciting, dynamic, and relatively natural habitats. Includes a reptile house, primate house, animals from Asia, marine mammals, big cats, a kid's zoo, a greenhouse with free-range animals, and an insect house. There are several food options throughout the park as well as multiple gift shops. However, most of the trails are on an incline that can be challenging to those with mobility issues, and it is NOT an easy walk from the metro - it's fairly far and uphill. However, free admission, a wide varied selection of animals, and friendly park staff make it well worth the walk! Definitely would recommend a visit!

Entrance to the zoo is free!!! There weren't a lot of animals on display though. It was a hot day out and the kids of all ages enjoyed walking through the sprinkler mist. Parking is $22 if there's no parking available on the street. There was a good variety of concession options and the prices weren't too bad. Would have given 5 stars if the animals posted and advertised were available.

Out of the many zoos I have visited, this one was very impressive. It provided a comfortable atmosphere and made you feel welcomed right away. The animals (Unlike other zoos) were incredibly agile and healthy looking. For example, the elephant showed healthy behavior, such as its ears flapping, and tail or trunk swinging (constant motion), and its Skin, which looked soft and resilient. The staff constantly asked us about our visit, making sure we were satisfied. One con, is that many of the exhibits were under construction, or there was just no animals in view. I would like to visit again!

I had a great time. Weather was perfect, animals galore. I even saw a deer who wandered in from Rock Creek Park. The staff and volunteers were especially friendly, making me feel very welcomed. A great way to spend a beautiful day.

I love this place I think it is a very good zoo and it's free!!!! The children I look after love it too. It's not to far away from 2 metro stations on the red line making it very accessible without a car. There are lots of things to see and do. There is lots of places to have your packed lunch too.

Great zoo! Awesome experience. Free admission. Their huge collection of animals is amazing. They have great facilities and well managed. Food prices there are obviously inflated but its to be expected. Highly recommend for families and animal lovers. Parking can be a pain so get there early or take the train. There is a stop about 5-10 minutes (walking) away.

The zoo is free and parking is $22. From all of the zoos I have been to, I think it is definitely worth a visit. We arrived around 10am and a few of the parking lots were already full. Please note that several exhibits are under construction, so if there is a certain type of animal you'd really love to see, I would give them a call first. Despite the construction, we saw many animals and enjoyed all of the exhibits. Most of the indoor exhibits require you to leave your stroller at the door. Please be prepared to walk uphill and downhill, so make sure to wear your comfy walking shoes. There are many food options on the trails and places to sit and relax. There are volunteers present throughout the zoo that give out facts. Before you visit, I would advise my fellow traveler to download the map from their website to help guide you. They do sell maps for $5 (cash) around the exhibits if you'd rather have something tangible. We spent three hours during this visit with a toddler and we had a blast.
