It's a nice, affordable hotel with unique architecture of a 19th century bourgeois building. It's clean, the receptionist was very friendly and the breakfast is US standard. **** I recommend to be there on a Wednesday, there is an amazing farmer's market on the backstreet of the hotel ****
Old building, too noisy you can hear people walking around or using the stairs.
Also every time you step squeak
Besides that coffee maker didn't work
Around 9 am after had a really bad night
Housekeeping knock my door
My wife's company paid for the room so I can't complain about price. But I would NEVER pay for this hotel! There's no parking, so you have to find your own down the street or pay $21/night to have it valet parked. I expect this in big cities like SF but not Monterey. We used a luggage cart to bring our stuff up to the room but we ended up coming to stairs and had to carry everything the rest of the way. The front desk never bothered warning us. The rooms have an old smell and the window shutters don't all close and some are broken off (room #306). The window faces a busy street making it VERY noisy! It has a small 90's style Zenith TV, no refrigerator or microwave. The only plus is it has a very big bed. I think it's more like a Cal King! So if you're paying, skip this hotel
Old-style rooms create a fun experience staying in Monterey. Breakfast is good and courteous staff.
Neat old building but not much going on for the room. Called it a king suite which gave the impression it would some room to move around and maybe a place for drinksnot so much
Staff is nice and helpful. Room 301 has a Murphy bed and no air conditioning. There is no seating in the room. The bed complains loudly when you sit on it, lay down or change positions. If you have the window open for ventilation, other guests can hear these noises, just as you can hear their conversations and activities. The bathroom in this room is lovely and feels more spacious than the room. If you are handicapped or have a stroller, ask for special accommodation ahead of time. Price seems high for these limitations.
Place smelled like burnt cotton candy combined with taxi air freshener. Construction noise. Garbage bin collection noise in the morning. Loud low frequency vibration/hum from the ceiling. Asked for a different room - they lied and said they were full.
"Breakfast" is a joke. No lobby. Good location. Room was ok - nothing special.
Pros:
-Location is fantastic
-Rooms are cozy and cute
-People are nice
-Everything was clean
-Sound level was peaceful
-Bathroom was nice
-There is $7 overnight parking 1 block away.
Cons:
-Breakfast was completely terrible, try eating across the street.
-No AC in room and couldn't leave window open because it was connected to the walkway between buildings for the hotel so literally our window would become an open door if left open. Room got stuffy, even with ceiling fan on high. There were 4 of us.
Hotel located right in the middle of downtown Monterey so very convenient for access to restaurants & bars. Fairly easy access to the fishermans wharf & the Monterey bay aquarium through a complimentary shuttle that stops right in front of the hotel.
My rating in primarily based on the amenities & customer service. We visited in July and the a/c in the room wasn't functional! We had to open the windows to let cooler Monterey air into the room so was not too much of a hassle. Still walking into a warm room was a bit odd.
Additionally, we requested late checkout for an hour (from 12 pm to 1 pm) on a Thursday morning for what was a not a busy day at the hotel (based on the general hustle & breakfast traffic). Still the hotel front desk lady refused right away and said "it MIGHT get busy!". This conversation after waiting for the the lady to hang up phone for a good 5 min. Odd feeling that room availability wasn't really a consideration for the refusal.
Wouldn't recommend; will stay at more courteous and professional chain hotels for an extra $25 in future!
Beautiful hotel and quaint rooms! I liked the free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast. The only thing wad that the heater made the room very hot!!! Had to turn it on and off a couple times to be comfortable. Other than that this was a nice hotel with friendly staff!
This hotel is amazing!!! Comfortable beds, friendly staff good breakfast! Everything about it is so great!
There was a "couple" engaged in intercourse next door to us. At first it was no big deal but their fun lead from 3 pm in the afternoon until 2 in the morning. Called the front desk twice and nothing was done about it. During vacation, I don't mind neighbors enjoying themselves but excessive banging on the wall and constant moaning spoils a stay.
Lovely old school hotel with friendly staff. Though room was right at some sort of building AC and therefore very loud. Also given its age it was a bit smelly. Still good atmosphere. Gym is tiny but enough to give you piece of mind :)
I stayed four nights at The Monterey Hotel, and will be returning. The hotel is from the early 1900s, and works hard to maintain that historic look and feel. I was impressed with the beautiful hand-carved furniture, and the old-timey music in the breakfast hall was a nice touch. I chatted for a while with the staff, who were welcoming and friendly. If you like the history of old Monterey, I recommend this hotel.
