Small state park - we loved it. Free. We hiked the Upper and Lower Dells area. Well-maintained trails; many steps to get you up and down the canyon. Can walk along floor and crisscross stream - come prepared to get your shoes/hiking boots wet if you choose. Stop in at Starved Rock State Park first - can pick up a brochure/map of Matthiessen SP. No ranger at Matthiessen. Pack it in, pack it out when on trails. Nice picnic area with restroom facilities. Leave no trace, except footprints. Warned to stay on trail for safety, and preservation of flora/fauna/geology. This is a smaller version of Starved Rock SP.

This place is incredible for sight seeing! Much better than starved rock though not as much hiking to do here. Total hike to see main attractions was just over 3 miles. Be warned though, if you want to get up close and really see it, you will have to climb quite a few stairs. If you can only see one, go to this one!

I have only ever gone down into the canyons to hike here but I greatly recommend. The route feels like nature's obstacle course that will have you hopping across concrete stepping stones surrounded by water, shimming along a narrow path between the canyon and more water, stepping carefully between giant roots of a tree growing above ground or balancing over a log to avoid stepping in water! It is a step above your normal hiking experience!

I first went here 20 years ago and enjoyed the park as a part of a starved Rock weekend. Cool place to explore but for me there to many people some weekends. Visit the park on a weekday to have a quiet time to explore. Park is much larger than you think, most do not see much of the park. Indians lived here in the 1700's and the area was full of various sand quarries in early 1900's . Make a list of the different places in the area and hit a couple of every year.

I have visited few state parks around the area, and I have to say that this one is one of the best ones. Lots of streams and hiking paths. I went when there was snow so all the streams froze over and you can walk on them. Great rock formations and caves in between rocks. Great for a family to visit. I recommend this park to everyone.

Great park to visit. It was cool how one of the trails hopes through on the water. Careful to not drop into the water. At one of the ends, there is a waterfall that you can walk under if you dare.

I've been to a lot of state parks this summer and Matthiessen has got to be my favorite so far. Got a ton of wonderful pics. The whole family including our dog loved it!! Very beautiful place!!! Can't wait to check it out in the fall when the leaves change!!!! Will be returning many times.

The park is nice but I think water falls are over hyped. The river side trails are far better than waterfall. If you like nature more than just the well paved trails follow river side. They get dense but you will love it

So pretty and so much fun for our family.
Word to the cautious, our youngest is 3 and I would definitely not recommend taking kids younger than that into the water fall part or the creek bed unless you were child wearing but we had a blast!!! Very inspiring place. We will go again.

Great for new experience. Can not compare to the tiny water fall in Homer Glen Illinois. Awesome caves! Even tho not many. Compared to other small caves in suburbs? Matthiessen is the best! Bring water shoes in a bag. They have many steps and stairs to get to the bottom and rite back up.

We love this park! Great, feature rich trails and canyons. Bring your water shoes and go slogging though the upper and lower dell streams. "Accidentally" fall into giants bathtub" or take a quick rinse off under one of the many waterfalls. Pack a lunch, great way to spend the day.

Must go spot for a very good trail, river and nice falls. Dells is where you can see the falls. You can spend entire day at this place. Parking is limited. But you can park in extended parking spaces. Take your own food. You won't find any restaurants near by. Good place for camping and hiking.

Usually I love this place but this trip was bad. We tried to do a trail loop but kept running into trail closed signs. And it seems pretty likely that the map that told us that going straight was part of the loop was wrong. Lots of trail closures right now.

The waterfall is more than beautiful and a great experience but there really needs to be an attendant there to make sure people are not bringing plastic bottles or beer bottles down by the lower dells part. My daughter almost cut her foot not once but twice on broken beer bottles. Luckily I was paying close attention to the ground because of the teenagers and young adults who were treating the space as their own personal rave spot. And some were even climbing the rocks so I'm seeing serious injuries in the near future. The waterfall lake part was filled with 20 floating plastic bottles as well. Other than that if u keep your eyes peeled and ignore the kids it was actually an amazing place.
