Fantastic "Old Florida"style restaurant with fabulous views. You get to sit under the shade of old oak trees. The food is good - especially the fresh fish. A must do!
Magnificent location right on the water. Free temporary boat dockage. Rustic and charming tropical decor. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times poor. I haven't been there in a while and I hope they found a way to keep the food quality consistent. I used to go there quite often but stopped after they decided to be non-dog-friendly. I hope they re-consider making that decision. I love the place and would like to go there again.
The location is amazing, but the food and service left much to be desired. Mar Vista provides a casual ambiance with beautiful scenic views. However, you expect a certain level of quality at $25+ an entree. I had the blackened grouper which is served with seasonal vegetables and rice. The blackened grouper was a complete waste of fresh fish, as the amount of salt overwhelmed any flavor from the spices or fish. The seasonal vegetable was roasted zucchini, which turned out to be a few (3-4) two inch wedges of burned flavorless zucchini. The rice was severely overcooked mush and tasted like pure chicken bullion. Throughout this dining experience, the service was slow and unattentive. It might be a good spot for an afternoon beer on the water, but not dinner.
Wonderful, wonderful place. Beautiful outside eating areas. One under the wooden canopy and the other under the trees both overlooking Sarasota Bay. Inside is under construction but still charming and has the original Village Pub style from way back-for now anyway. The food is outstanding and the personnel friendly, attentive, and fun.
The venue and vista, from the outside patio is really lovely. The food was adequate, although a bit pricey vs Sandbar and others. Service was good, albeit a bit slow and sometimes forgetful on beverage orders. Biggest issue, were the insects - noseeums - really overwhelming. Clearly the restaurant knows it's an issue, because they had a can of bug spray at the ready - didn't really help. Would have been more helpful, to be made aware of it and given the chance to choose to eat inside. Overall, a fairly average experience.
Love Mar Vista. Not the same classic, old style Longboat local watering hole it was when I first fell in love with it. Focusing more on the outdoor dining experience. Bar has been reduced to 1/3 it original size. Still great fresh seafood (some caught fresh that day by the chefs), the fare is a little pricey, but worth the visit. Be prepared to PAY for alcohol (now I know how they can afford to expand). Overall, still my favorite place on the island.
Beautiful place to have a date night. Pretty good food, it was better the first time I went last year. Very romantic.
The view is excellent, and the tables under the trees on the shore of the waterway are nicely located in the trees and under strands of lights, but our latest visit to this restaurant left us disappointed compared to previous visits in previous years.
It was not busy when we arrived and we said we'd like to sit on a table by the water under the lights. The host led us to a table and chairs that were quite wet, remarked that it had just been raining and asked if we'd like him to dry them off. Should not have been a question.
Our server was efficient, but not friendly. Adequate, but not making the experience memorable in any way.
The food was OK. Another reviewer remarked that the rolls seemed like they were from a store, and yes, it did feel that way. Also felt like the coleslaw was the same way, bland, and spooned from a large container.
The portions were adequate, but the food itself was not exciting. Neither or us were excited by our meals which is unusual. Additionally I would suggest that serving the food as isolated islands on huge plates is probably giving some diners the feeling that the portions are small.
In conclusion, we did have a disappointing experience at this restaurant on this occasion. It feels like some attention to quality control is lacking in the kitchen, presentation and service. The excellent view is not enough in itself to overcome the deficiencies.
I wish I could give Mar Vista a review far higher than 5 stars. From the view, to the cuisine, to the amazing service by our fantastic server, Christopher, it was by far the best experience of our entire vacation. We cannot wait to come back!
Solid seafood spot, with a large outdoor dinning area for groups and couples under the oaks and on the bay. Great spot where tourists and locals go for a nice selection of local catch, sides and cocktails. Prices are moderate. For landlubbers they have some steak, chicken and many sides to satisfy the vegan.
I would normally give this place a 5, because it is one of the best spots in this area of Florida. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RUM RUNNERS? We were there two different days a couple of weeks ago, and they just aren't the same. We have bragged for years on these being the best out there, but these didn't taste or even look the same. Other than that, the food was great, the service was great, and we really enjoy sitting outside under the trees. This is a great spot to pull the boat up and eat!!!
