We really like this State Park. Not to bad of a drive from Fort Worth. There is plenty to do. They have some pretty nice trails. Do wear good shoes. These trails can get pretty rugged. The rocks and cliffs are a must to hike through. You can even do rock climbing if you have the gear. Do check ahead of time. They sometimes close it down especially in adverse weather. The lake is really nice for kayaking and fishing 🎣. There is an area just for horses. And trails to explore with your animals.

The validity of this review really depends on the quality to which you compare the scenery. It is well maintained and camp sites are easily accessable. For North Central Texas, this park is really very nice, but is humbled when compared to the likes of Tennessee or nearly any park in Colorado. The hiking trails along the shore are serene and the rock climbing seems limited but safe. The quality of water is lacking severely, but I have eaten fish from it's depths and have not yet perished. I love Mineral Wells state park, even though the town around it has all but been abandoned.

I've done a few weekend trips as well as camped for a whole week in tent sites. I did have raccoons come and take some of my food, but it was kind of my fault for making it too easy for them. There is nothing fancy about the trails. In fact it's a little boring. Don't let that dissuade you from getting out and camping though! This is still a Texas State Park and you can still have fun and adventure. It's a good park that's not a far drive from the metroplex.

Very well kept park, and lake. Only downside is the boys scouts that come here are very loud and disruptive at night. Where is the respect for the peacefulness for nature. There are also campers that drive about speeding and yelling at night on the park's roads. Why are the park officials not responding to this disregard and disrespectfulness.

The park is relatively small in terms of the different types of trails available for hiking. I used the extra long (the trek took about 5 hours of power walking/trudging), flat horse trail, without a horse which made it hard to enjoy (my fault) as I kept my eyes to the ground most of the time to avoid poop. There was a shorter trail with lots of rocks and uneven terrain outlining the lake which was very fun to explore. Only small deer poop here. The trees take on a variety of reds and yellows in the fall season. Shelter and restroom facilities were well maintained and the rangers/staff were very nice.

It may be beneficial to bring hammocks and cots when staying overnight, as some of the camping grounds are rockier than others.

One of the best state parks that I have been to. I ride the trail between Mineral Wells and Weatherford several times a month. There is a trail head at the state park as well. It is a wonderful trail to ride but some areas need some maintenance.

We love this park. It is close to our home. The campsites have trees and that makes you feel like you have some privacy to some extent. The bathrooms need some updating but at least they work well. Thay have a ranger driving thru the park all the time and that makes you feel protected. We have been in several parks that don't do that at all. We have a travel trailer so I can't comment on the cabins. We did go to the swim beach this year for the first time and it was great. Great swimming area. We always consider this our favorite state park except for the bathrooms and they don't have any full hook ups but the park is fairly kept up and is beautiful.

Unique developed state park on US 180 immediately east of the town of Mineral Wells. Built around a central lake, the park has three distinct areas--the western shore of the lake, which contains screen shelters, camping areas, and a trail system with a small primitive campground, the Penitentiary Hollow area east of the lake, with picnic areas and trails on a high bluff above the water, and a central area at the south end of the lake, with the park store, fishing area, and canoe rentals. Excellent facilities for both campers and day use patrons.

Another great, amazing State Park in Texas! Its only about and hour west of Fort Worth. We spent 3 days at the park in the middle of June and opted for a shelter instead of having to pitch a tent. After this experience, I may not pitch a tent again if the parks we visit have shelters. It is so much quicker and easier to not have mess with the tent. Shelters are a little small but we were about to get 3 queen size air mattresses fully inflated with the table still inside. Spent a lot of time in and around the shelter enjoying the landscape and views. Plenty of trees to hang hammocks and each shelter has a fire ring, BBQ pit and some open areas.The riding trails are nice but since they are share with equestrian riding, the ground is soft and it makes for a tiring bike ride. It was a relaxing time in spite of the heat, but the lake and trees kept thing bearable. The view are amazing! The town of Mineral Wells is close by especially when you need to make that quick grocery store run into town. Weekends are always packed so if you can spare a few days during the week, that is best.

The park staff is the rudest I've ever experienced at a state park. The shelters are too close together. Like being in a crowded neighborhood park. There are some very cool features in the trails and rocks. Park Rangers do not enforce the rules. People drinking and loud till after 3AM, 15-20 people at one site. Too much.

I posted a picture of the sign you see as you exit the park which says, "Y'all Come Back" which is the last thing these park employees want. It is clear they hate dealing with the public. So terribly rude and dismissive. It's also clear these are government employees. Any private sector employees who treated their customers like they do would be fired.

Stayed here for 3 night is Screen Shelter 3, the view are breath taking and the hiking is wonderful. the fish however did not want to bite but we were not all the serious about it anyways. Great family camp ground. will be back

Nice facilities, etc, but ONLY go here if you want the Park Staff breathing down your neck, CONSTANTLY NO privacy at all I have been all over, camping, from Iowa, Utah, Texas and Oklahoma parks (I live in Texas) By Far the worst is this park You feel like you are constantly being watched (Keep in mind, I am not a drinker or anything) The 2nd worst park is Lake Murray (Oklahoma) State Park These two parks SUCK Stay away

One of our favorite state parks. Camping, fishing, hiking, biking and birding abound. Rock climbing available for those who want to try out Penitentiary Hollow. The staff frequently offer hikes and bird walks. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

We spent Thanksgiving weekend here and barely got a reservation. We stayed at an equestrian site and although we weren't close to the lake, the site was large and private. There were so many leaves on the ground, they provided a layer of cushion so we slept more comfortably. The trails were nice, varying from easy to challenging, and there was some fall foliage. We will return - it's close enough for a day trip! - and want to try out the shelters.
