From the time I explained our story that Danny my adopted grandson lost his dad which was my son, the entire Great Southern staff wanted Danny to harvest his first deer. Hunter our guide worked so hard for us that I truly believe he wanted it as bad as we did. Our first harvest together will never ever be forgotten the only thing missing was his dad to enjoy the experience. I know he was smiling on us both. Great Southern Outdoors could not have done anything better to make us feel more at home and part of their family. Thank you Rex,Hunter,Ginger,Linda, and the rest of the great staff at GSO. See you next year!!!!!
We look forward to going back to GSO each year. We are fortunate to be able to carefully select places we will visit for hunting outside of our home state yet always go back to Alabama for Great Southern Outdoors. Hunter, Rex and Ginger set this outfit apart from the rest. The lodging, food, and views are beyond all expectations. Regardless of how long you stay, you will leave feeling like part of the Great Southern Outdoors family. We just returned and are already looking forward to next year!
Great experience! Hunter was my guide and worked hard to ensure I had a positive experience. GSO offers free chase hunting. My deer hunting stands and blinds were placed in spectacular locations. I felt game could pop out any time of day. The plantation has an abundance of deer, hogs, turkey, coyotes and bobcat. My hunt was opening weekend of rifle season. Temperatures were warm and the wind blowing. Even in this type of weather Hunter worked hard to place me in an area with high probably of seeing a trophy buck. Welk, his efforts paid off. I harvested large doe and 8 point trophy buck! The lodge is comfortable and the southern cooking spectacular. I fully recommend GSO to anyone wanting a fair chase hunt for deer and hogs. I'll be back soon.
Initially, I was happy with most aspects of this hunt. The property was good, the lodge and amenities were very well priced and the food was delicious. Had it not been for two instances of overt RACISM, it would have been a great trip. Upon arrival, my Korean-American friend was asked by the owner if he could speak English. Apparently Rex, thought this was an appropriate joke to make. On our second night of hunting, I asked if anyone had seen our friend, Chris. Hunter, our guide, asked "which one is he?" Offhandedly I replied, "one of the Asians," as there were 5 of us in the group of 13. Without skipping a beat Hunter replies, "Man you guys have so many ching chong wing wangs in your group, I don't know who's who." I'm not a sensitive or overly PC person, but as a customer, I would expect a business to be more professional and have some tact.
My husband and I went on the couples hog hunt this weekend. We can't say enough good things about this place. Rex and Hunter are absolutely awesome! They make you feel right at home. The food was the best, every meal! The plantation is absolutely beautiful! Unfortunately, my husband and I didn't kill a pig but other hunters did kill some while we were there. Leaving there was like leaving family, we didn't want to go! We will definitely be back! Thanks again Rex, Hunter, Jack, and all the cooks!!
I had the pleasure of going to Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation for a women's only hog hunt! The staff and guides sure do know how to make you feel at home. They helped us all get settled into our spacious cabins and then welcomed us to relax prior to the hunt in the lodge or outside on the large deck which overlooks a large field and the woods. The food was DELICIOUS! Be prepared to overindulge. They accommodated all of us very well during our 3 hunts and made sure we felt safe in our stands prior to leaving. As for previous reviews stating not many hogs were harvested/unsuccessful hunts - well we know these animals are nomads and that's why we hunt them - for the thrill! Not all hunts will be successful. I was not able to harvest a hog this trip but I still had a blast and appreciated GSO getting all us women together for a hunt and loved experiencing such a sense of comradery among those involved. I will definitely be back in the future and hope to bring my husband along next time!
Nice facilities, lodging and a super cook. If that's what you want, this is the place. If you want to kill some hogs, not so much. It was made clear that hogs are an after thought and not a money maker. 16 hunters and 1 hog taken. Hunters basically used as test subjects for their night light systems, many of which simply didn't work leaving hunters with hours on end staring into the dark. All agreed that for deer and quail GSO is worth considering but for hogs, go elsewhere.
Great Southern Outdoors is a beautiful plantation full of amazing wildlife everywhere you look. The lodging is clean, cozy and extremely nice for a hunting plantation. I can't say enough about the food, it was phenomenal and there was plenty of it. You will not go hungry on your stay with the Great Southern Outdoors. The guides are experienced, personable and go above and beyond to make sure you have a great experience. The staff here is top notch and just a true pleasure to get to know. I highly recommend you booking your next AL hunt with GSO as you will not be disappointed. Good people, good fun, good food, great hunting/fishing. I can't wait to go back!
GSO provided me a great first time ever Hog Hunting experience. I am a long time deer hunter and this had the same adrenaline rush as bow hunting. Our guide Hunter put us on hogs everyday. I was fortunate to be able to kill a 225lb Sow on the first hunt. Saw lots of sign and groups of hogs daily. Blinds and stands well kept. They took the time and effort to put out lots of corn with lights for night hunting. Hunter did a great job tracking at night with their dog Jack. Thanks Jack! They did a great job dressing and preparing the meat for my cooler at the end of the weekend. Lodging was very nice and comfortable. Food was excellent. Staff was very accommodating. Overall 5 stars for a great weekend. Will be back next year.
Where Southern Hospitality meets the great outdoors! This place is covered up with wildlife. In between hog hunts was able to ride the property a little bit with Rex and it was unbelievable at the amount of hog signs. The guides done everything they could to put us on hogs, yes it is free range so you may not see something every time you sit, but you can bet your hard earned dollar they spend as much time scouting To put you in the best position to see whatever your hunting. I was able to fight the rain off and put a nice hog in the freezer. Not to mention the fishing isn't bad either! After the hunts some of the best cooking you will ever taste will be waiting on you. Can't wait to get down there and get after one of those brutes they got walking around down there. If you ever get a chance to go I would highly recommend Great Southern Outdoors.
I came out to Great Southern Outdoors for a Pheasant shoot two weeks ago. The property and lodge are very beautiful, and the staff are terrific. My bedroom was very comfortable and I enjoyed all the meals. They definitely feed you! The lady's in the kitchen really hit it out of the park, so I wanted to give a big shout out to them. Rex, Hunter and the staff are very friendly and hospitable and made me feel right at home. The pheasant shoot itself was a blast! This was my first one but I was still able to snag 4 birds. They do a community pot, and divide the birds amongst the shooters. So I ended up bringing home 6 birds. My overall experience was fantastic. I enjoy much of the wildlife and foliage near my cabin. I will definitely be coming back to Great Southern Outdoors.
