Really well kept and very interesting. Much bigger than you'd think, you can spend hours just looking around.

This will take you about an hour - there’s a lot more than it seems!
Several options. You can walk the grounds. Peep inside the generator room. Walk INSIDE THE BATTERY (!) and see many of the spaces and read about how they used to arm themselves. Most of it is open. :)
After you’ve gotten your fill of history and taken obligatory cannon pictures, step over the hill to a beautiful sandy beach and be transported into another world.
Parking is plentiful. Asphalt lane way with dirt packed spaces.
Leashed pets are welcome everywhere except inside the battery.response / report this review -

History isn’t a video game, you have to see it through the spectrum of your imagination. This place really lets you feel what it was like through several different periods of shore defense. I’ve visited a lot of old forts and this one gives you more ability to interact with it than most. Maybe it’s just the kid in me because my boys couldn’t get enough of this great historic landmark.

Worth seeing once I guess just to say you've been there. Kinda boring IMO. Not much to see besides old canons and a bunch of empty gunpowder storage rooms. Went on a day where the temp was 95 degrees and there was only one water fountain that was way back up at the visitor center, so bring your own water since the fort is spread out and you will be doing a lot of walking. Doesn't hold a candle to Fort Sumter. Of all the amazing places of historical significance in/around Charleston I wouldn't even put in in my top 50. But, that being said, it was only $5 for both me and my gf, and some may find it interesting. Different strokes for different folks

Cool little National Park. Cheap for the family and very interesting history of the fort's uses in several wars in the defense of Charleston harbor. Friendly park rangers.

Fascinating piece of history starting with the revolutionary war and ending with WWII. Each section is restored to a different time in its history. The museum gives you a look at artifacts from those times and a little corny video describing its history. Beautiful views of the Charleston harbor and about a mile out you can see Fort Sumter.

Well preserved fort with rangers on staff to keep the items pristine and inform the visitors. Wonderful panoramic views and views of fort Sumter. Love the placards with information and the leisurely stroll paths.

My wife and I aren't big history nuts, so with that considered we didn't find this to be overly interesting. It's cool to see the evolution of naval defense throughout the years. We spent about an hour going through the dirt and walking down to the beach, which was plenty of time for us! Cool place to swing past though.

A piece of history that everyone can enjoy. Well taken care off and just an enjoyable walk. Really cool to walk around this place and imangine what it was like. Great view of Ft. Sumter too. A good alternative to the long trip to visit Ft. Sumter. Can walk down the beach from here as well.
