I love the Flying Fish. We live in San Jose but drive over the hill every 3-4 months for a relaxing day at Point Lobos and dinner at the Flying Fish. My wife and I have been coming here for over 20 years. My go to dish is the peppered seared ahi, it melts in your mouth. Tony is our server and is super. We will be back in a few months for another relaxing Friday and a great dinner.
The atmosphere is intimate, partly due to the basement location but mainly because the seating arrangement allows visual (but not acoustic) privacy, and the serving staff are warm and discreet. However, the food is disappointing: nicely described on the menu but bland and unimaginative in execution. If anything it shows us that a wonderful Californian small town location and access to the best fresh produce are not enough to make a memorable dining experience. I hope the chef can elevate this fish to truly fly one day.
Returned after years to one of my favorite Carmel restaurants, The Flying Fish. Honestly, i’ve been coming here since the 70s, when it was Shabu Shabu. First, I love the ambiance of this restaurant: covered in wood paneling, with separated booths and padded benches, it feels warm and secretive.
Strangely, a message we had left attempting to make a reservation was never received—but the Manager made the extra effort and was able to fit us in. Hurrah!
As ever, service was wonderful and food tasty. The wait staff here are excellent; please tip accordingly!
We enjoyed calamari appetizer, which was light and fresh with two dipping sauces; one spicy and one creamy. Both were very good. My dinner companions enjoyed the Yosenabe (seafood clay pot), which was a very generous amount of food that you season and cook to your own liking at your table. They were pleased with it, but one commented that, from memory, earlier shabu shabu presentations were more flavorful. Still, everyone felt the mussels, shrimp, scallops, etc. were wonderfully fresh and delicious.
I ordered my favorite, the black bean halibut, which they deliver in a parchment paper pouch with julienned vegetable side. It was, as ever, delicious—but I think. I might have had maybe ten black beans total with my whole portion. Instead, they have added in mushrooms, and I don’t recall that being a part of the meal before. Since I was introducing one of my dinner companions to the dish, I had to hunt for beans to deliver the ‘first taste’ bite to him. He did enjoy it—but, really, more of the tasty, fermented black beans and less mushroom, please!
For dessert we all shared the tempura fried banana with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce and the green tea ice cream with chocolate sauce and mandarin oranges; perfect finish to the meal.
The Best! I highly recommend this Restaurant. Expertly prepared cuisine, the food is outstanding and the service impeccable. Not to mention the owners are fabulous people.
A nice place in Carmel.
The decor has an aprés ski type with all the walls and floor covered in wood.
The food was delicious and the seafood had an asian twist. We ordered artichoke, alaskan black cod and rare ahi (tuna). The black cod could have more flavors, but the rest of the food was great.
The service was great!
Best tuna around!
Staff is super friendly.
If you like seafood don't miss this place.
The food here was spectacular and extremely fresh! (we ordered the Ahi Tuna and Seafood pasta) The manger Rich was kind and accommodating given we didn't have a reservation, and even surprised us with some ice cream at the end of the meal! 10/10 best restaurant in Carmel!
Delicious seafood and wonderful staff! Thank you to Rich for all of the great Carmel suggestions!
On our first night in Carmel-By-The-Sea we were recommended to eat at the Flying Fish. Our expectations were set at a very average level, but upon receiving our first appetizer we were blown away. The food was incredible! Exactly as others had said online. We ordered the delicious California Tower, Artichokes and last, but definitely not least, the almond crusted sea bass. I would have eaten there 2 nights in a row if I could have! Great service and a great vibe inside the interesting little restaurant. A must try in Carmel!
Flying Fish does everything right-service, wonderfully fresh seafood, great wine list. The servers are attentive without bring overbearing. The restaurant is very cosy. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Came here on a Google suggestion and was not disappointed. Got here at 600p on a Friday night and there was already a long wait. I got lucky that someone canceled and I got right in. They start you with fresh fried wanton chips and this amazing salsa which is almost sweet. So good. Then we had this like open style California Roll which was good too. We both ordered the steak which was cooked to perfection and finished with crème brulee. Food was tasty and service friendly.
I can't understand why everybody is raving about this place.
We ordered the tempura starter and one fish entree - we were heavily disappointed by the presentation and the lack of flavour. The tempura was ok. The rocket salad was not fresh, the fish was not seasoned at all. Overall a mediocre experience.
The staff is great and cheered us up with excellent service.
Not worth to come back - there are better options in this area.
