Great food! Great service! Friendly staff! The menu caters really well to various dietary preferences. The vegetarian portion of the menu has a plethora of options to choose from. The flavors are out of this world and the waiters do a fine job with explaining the spice levels. Oh yeah, don't leave without trying the rice pudding!!!

Essence of India is the ideal restaurant for Indian cuisine. It is in a prime location with great parking. Not to mention that the owners are down to earth, great people. They offer great prices on the food and a cool buffet style layout.
I highly recommend the lamb biryani. But, they also offer great vegetarian and vegan options. Great restaurant, great people, great food. 10/10 would definitely come back again.

Visited along with my wife who makes pretty good Indian/Pakistani food at home and is accordingly very critical of food when eating outside.
She loved every single item at this restaurant. The taste is authentic Indian. The staff knows what goes into each of the menu items.
Also had a little chat with the co-owner of the restaurant, who was super-friendly and responsive.

Also, like the simple but large-scale decor on walls as opposed to more common 110 items together kind of together in one place.

Overall, an excellent experience.

This food here is DELICIOUS. Went last week, and couldn’t help but to come just today. Would absolutely recommend this delicious cuisine to ANY food enthusiast, or anybody who likes food in general. The vast number of choices on the menu is really outstanding, and I love all of it!!! I love the decoration and the ambiance. I also love how FAST the food comes from the kitchen to the table. The waiters are very kind and very helpful when it comes to picking the food. I am very surprised that the restaurant isn’t filled all the way up, but it is nice, quiet, and calm, and this is what I would like to find in a restaurant. To summarize, if you are hungry and are in Tallahassee, this is DEFINITELY the place to go.

Essence of India is the only spot I know of with Indian food this good. I've never had chicken saag I liked better. From the moment you walk in the door the environment is so warm and cozy and the owners are friendly as well. Me and all my friends love this spot and will definitely be back to check out the weekend buffet!!

Went there to eat biryani but was given fried rice. Although they took it back and didn't charge me, I was not impressed with their staff. Very clumsy service and no where near authentic.

Although the regular, dinner menu may be pricy, Essence of India's weekend buffet is a great deal for great Indian cuisine. I stopped in with some friends soon after noon on a Saturday and the large seating space was sprinkled here and there with customers. No where near as packed as at dinner. But the server was friendly and got us seated, refilling drinks and clearing away plates from the buffet as needed. The buffet itself had a wide range of both meat and vegetable options, especially since Indian cuisine is largely vegetarian based, and everything was continuously being restocked, keeping even the rice fresh. It was surprising that the meat wasn't overcooked and dry, since that is a regular habit of buffets. The butter chicken may have been my favorite, but the lentil and chickpea dish with a nice and spicy kick wasn't far behind. This will definitely be my go-to place for Indian cuisine in the future!

Close this place for a week and DEEP CLEAN IT! The bathrooms are filthy. The chairs in the restaurant are filthy. The place feels neglected. We visited for the first time, sat for 5 mins and left, I dread to think what the kitchen is like. Cleanliness & attention to detail matter!

I would have to say this is the best Indian restaurant in Tallahassee. The food is quite authentic, I have eaten here multiple times and had a good experience each time. The buffet is well-stocked and the food is delicious. I recommend this restaurant.

While I cannot attest to how it compares to other Indian food, I can say that this is one of my favorite places to eat lunch in Tallahassee. I typically eat here at least twice per week, simply because the lunch buffet is good quality, delicious, and affordably priced. The atmosphere is also very laid back, which I appreciate.

Give the Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer, and Chicken Saagwala a try, especially with a drizzle of the hot sauce to add heat to taste.

So I come in, the host says in a rude voice you can sit anywhere you want. I sit down and the waiter is rude af. He doesn't come by at all to give me water or ask how my meal was. The food was awful. I left one penny in change and I hope this business gets better service. I will not be back.

Holy cow! Just discovered this place through a friend. The food is amazing and the portions are bigger than expected. Pretty affordable too for how amazing it is. They have a lunch buffet most days as well. Will definitely be coming back.

The lunch buffet is consistently high-quality, and the staff is friendly and attentive. I give four stars instead of five only because the offerings don't change much (except on Fridays, when it's slightly more expensive than the rest of the week), but it's nice to know they'll always have familiar favorites, and I always leave satiated.

Try the cabbage!
