Filled out adoption papers for 2 kittens. They never contacted me as they said they would. I called and they told me I was approved but they gave the kittens to someone else! I'll NEVER support this place again. They told me it's the policy to allow multiple applicants and the first approved gets the animal. Is this an auction house for animals?

I don't like how this place seems to be conducting its business. If you cruise through the adoptable dogs (look in the photos) on their facebook page you'll see many of them have little stories about how they came to be at the shelter. Many of them are from Detroit, Flint, Muskegon and even other States such as Texas, Virginia and Arizona. It's clear from some of the descriptions that this is being done deliberately, shelter to shelter, and it's not the case that these are dogs that move in from out of the area with a family and then get abandoned at the shelter.

You might think so what they're helping to find dogs a home so why does it matter where the dogs are from? Well, it's a problem because then they tell local people who need an emergency shelter for a dog or dogs that they don't have room. I watched that happen recently as it was discussed on some social media pages with people begging for someone to take a local dog in immediately, and it truly was an emergency situation - exactly something you'd expect a local shelter like this to be for, right?

Well, from what I saw on these pages about this situation the Cherryland Humane Society told the people that they were full and couldn't take the dog in. In looking through their adoptable dogs during this time period there are at least 2 of them at the Cherryland Humane Society which they brought in from out of the area. Does this seem right? It doesn't to me. Do you expect a local humane society to be providing space for local animals or to be importing animals thus removing not only shelter space but homes for local animals that need it?

What about the history of these dogs? Many of them are pitbull breeds being imported from places like Flint and Detroit which are notorious hotspots of bad breeding and dog fighting. The stories accompanying these dogs say they were strays and their history is unknown. Are they importing potentially dangerous animals into our community?

It's important to note that the Cherryland Humane Society also provides shelter for stray animals through local county and city governments (animal control). Do they turn them away too because of these dogs they've chosen to import into our community?

What would happen to YOUR dog if she got away from your yard and you couldn't find her and Cherryland Humane Society turns her away because of all these Detroit, Flint etc dogs being in the shelter? I guess dog owners are supposed to just hope someone will take care of the local dogs until they can figure out where they are and pick them up???

I wonder how many people who donate to this shelter are aware of these practices and the very real possibility that the shelter won't be there if they happen to need it because too many dogs from downstate and out of state have been imported by the shelter's choice?

Finally, according to their website, they charge a $40 fee to surrender an animal. I believe this only encourages people to dump their animals somewhere and have someone pick them up and take them to the shelter because then it's free.

Hopefully this shelter will start to focus more on the local community rather than trying to be the savior of all the lost dogs in the world and sacrificing local dogs in the process.

Some of the most patient people in the world work at Cherryland, they answer every call and take in every animal they can, even when they are over capacity they still do their best to find some other organization in the area to take an animal in need.

They train 30 people every month to help volunteer and roughly 15 of those people aren't paying attention, aren't listening, and are taking up a huge amount of their time, but the staff never gets frustrated or turns people away, they patiently answer every question and repeat every answer as many times as they need to, to ensure that the animals will get the best care possible from volunteers.

They come in early and stay late, they give up lunch breaks, and their fun Friday nights to make sure every animal in that building is well taken care of.
They get screamed, sworn at, and threatened, when people find out they have to pay out a little money to forfeit an animal, and they never scream back, they apologize for literally doing their jobs (and doing them well) to frustrated people. Because Cherryland does not euthanize animals for the sake of space, they have a capacity limit. You can't house 50 kittens in a bathroom, and you certainly can't house 10 dogs in one kennel, but a lot of people don't understand that. They have no idea that the shelter literally has no more room, and that it costs $40 a day to keep every little cutie in that building happy and healthy. They take their undeserved lumps like champs, all day, everyday.
They cry when someone brings in an animal that is sick or has been mistreated and they cry when an animal finds a new loving home. They do everything in their power to make sure every cat and dog in the shelter is well fed and well loved.

The staff at Cherryland Humane society are some of the best people out there, they are angels, they answer the prayers of hungry and cold little kittens living in sheds, and the prayers of the senior dogs that may not be as cute as puppies but still want an deserve a loving forever home.

CHS is the best! I am consistently impressed by the patience and kindness of the staff and how well they and their volunteers care for the animals. I love that they are a no kill shelter most of all! Spay and neuter your pets to keep it that way please!

Why can't I give them one star? They are the humane society, they take and care for strays, that's what they do! Someone abandoned some cats at our property, I want them to take them, but according to them they are too full and can't. If I leave them there they say that I will be charged with abandoning a pet. They aren't mine!!! So now I sit with four cats that I can't have, because of some jerk, and they won't help. If you can't do your job, close your damned doors and let someone else take over.

We hit the dog lottery at Cherryland Humane Society. Riley our Golden Retriever mix is now a treasured member of our family. We can't imagine what it would be like without him. Thanks for taking such good care of animals who need a new home.

I volunteer for Cherryland Humane Society and I have a dog and cat now that I got from them. I am thoroughly impressed with the staff and great care they give each pet. As busy as they are, each animal in their facility is giving care according to their individual needs and I am impressed that they take several applications for each dog to find the best possible match for a new home. Volunteers walk dogs and play with cats and help with pet care along with a friendly and caring staff. Each pet leaves spayed/neutered with necessary immunizations. I read that some people commented they tried to drop off kittens and were disappointed. Realize one should call ahead to find when they will have room for more kittens, especially in the busy kitten season. Better yet, volunteer and/or donate to this wonderful nonprofit who works endlessly to save every pet they can and adopt them out to approved forever homes.

First impression - the shelter is a clean, well lit, pleasant place to visit with the animals up for adoption. The staff was wonderfully friendly and extremely knowledgeable, as a new pet parent I had lots of questions about finding the right dog to make a perfect fit. It's obvious that the staff truly cares about the animals and they make it clear that their work put the pet's well-being first - which is as it should be. My experience with Cherryland was exceptional, and I can't thank them enough for their hard and sometimes heart-wrenching work.
