We were very disappointed, as we expected more of this stay.
Breakfast is touted as a wonderful experience, not so. I do not like cold scrambled eggs on rice or on an untoasted bagel. I do not want store bought pumpkin pie or zucchini bread with ice cream for breakfast.
I was told our room was not cleaned, bed made etc. because the door was locked from the inside. How is that possible if we were not in the room and if we were there wouldn't we have heard the housekeeper at the door? And then still no one came to clean the room!
Also, it snowed, we know you are not used to snow but you could have at least brushed off the outside stairs for your guests. Or maybe even brushed a path to our suite. Parking lots at the other inn across the street were cleared. Ours was treacherous!
We have stayed in many lovely B and B's unfortunately this is not one of them.
Not to sound trite but I do not think the innkeeper is inspecting what he expects.
We stayed at the Whitegate for a couple of much needed days of rest and relaxation. The property is lovely and in a great location, close to downtown but not right in the middle of all the noise! It was peaceful and welcoming. Frank and Ralph are wonderful hosts and breakfast was delicious. We started each morning with a game of chess in the living room and then headed about our day. We will definitely return when we head to the mountains again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our night at this Bed and Breakfast. The owners were great, the other guests were also a pleasure to meet. Breakfast was fantastic. My wife has Celiac so we are both gluten free and I am allergic to Citrus but the chef prepared a fabulous breakfast that we enjoyed a lot. We will be staying here again, hopefully for a longer stay as we liked it so much.
Had a terrific experience at the inn. Room was great with an incredible bathroom.
Breakfasts were superb and Frank provided entertaining conversation and banter every morning.
Location is very good for downtown venues.
Only recommendation would be to expand housekeeping staff if possible so rooms can be cleaned earlier in the day.
We will definitely be back.
It was an exceptional experience at the 1889 White Gate Inn. All of the rooms on the main level (entry foyer, living room, dining room & sun room) are just beautiful. They are decorated in a way that you feel you are stepping into a magazine. The Dorothy Parker Room was charming. The gardens are magnificent. The morning breakfasts were delicious and the table was elegantly set. It was nice to sit at a large table and have the opportunity to chat with other guests. The afternoon social hour was also a really nice touch. Frank, Matt, Kyle and Susan as well as the rest of the staff were very attentive and made us feel welcome.
small issue with the lock/door knob falling off, but they were great and fixed it immediately. I recommend that the B&B offer in room breakfast dining. i requested this actually day 2 and they were great about providing it! Very accommodating hosts, thanks, I highly recommend. Thomas was also very helpful, thanks.
Love the wine/appetizers every day from 5-6 too.
My wife and I decided to visit Asheville on our way home to Texas since we had not been there for quite a few years. We decided to stay in a B & B that was close to downtown and began looking on-line. While most of the Inns looked very nice, we thought The WhiteGate stood a notch above the others. We were not surprised. Believe me, we chose well. The decor throughout was tastefully done and the grounds were a marvel. We stayed in the Walt Whitman suite and it met all of our expectations. Did I mention Breakfast? It was a treat both mornings. The food being creative and fresh as well as filling. But, I believe the owners and their total commitment makes the WhiteGate Inn a special place to visit. We will return!
Really loved the breakfast and never needed to eat lunch! Enjoyed being so close to the downtown area. Never needed to drive to our dining destinations. Ralph's garden is very impressive. We did a couples massage which was a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary.
We tried to book through the website but ended up having to call in our reservations. Come to find out that the inn was not setup to take Discover cards. We booked the cottage for our honeymoon and we definitely enjoyed our stay. The entire place has a quiet and peaceful feel about it. The breakfast every morning was delicious. It was a unique experience. We would definitely go back again.
Nice staff and accommodating, taking care of tickets for us and bringing breakfast, but the room was not real clean. Mold or dirt in the shower especially the corners, silverware specifically spoons not clean, and the porch needs a good power wash especially on the beams holding the roof. It was much cleaner the first time we stayed and I love the place and don't want it to get rundown, easy for me to say. With that said, I will be back.

We spent 3 nights in the oscar Wilde suite for our 10 year anniversary celebration. We could not have asked for a more hospitable, beautiful, and comfortable stay. Frank, Ralph, and the entire staff were spot on with service, advice, and knowledge of the city, and the food was SUPERB! I'm still missing my 3 course breakfasts! This was our first stay at a B and B and it will definitely not be our last. Hope all B and B's can live up to White Gate! Frank and Ralph really put their heart and soul into white gate and you can feel it from the moment you arrive. Thanks SO much!!
The white gate inn was everything we could have expected with a little extra in the breakfast. Found the family style setting to be nice and made for some good conversations. The owner was very nice and took the time to get to know everyone in the room. The food was way out of my norm for breakfast, but delicious none-the-less.
Added note, a lot of reviews complained about the breakfast conversation. both my wife and myself found it relaxing and put everyone at ease, but that may be because we are social people.
