This hotel is in a stunning location, with great views across to Mount Cook. It gets busy, with a lot of tourist groups, for obvious reasons, and the restaurants are always full, often requiring a booking to get a table. In the a la carte restaurant the service can be slow, (and the food is definitely only average) but it's less crowded than the buffet restaurant. The hotel provides a lot of guided tours and has many other facilities on site. Worth stopping here for the location and views alone. PS give the hotel cafe a miss, we had some amazing food in roadside cafes throughout NZ, this cafe ranks solidly at the bottom of the list for food taste and quality.

Dinner for 2 at the Panorma Room with beautiful views of Mount Cook. Service from the point of view of an American guest was the best we had in NZ. Most restaurants were hands off at the Panorama Room my water glass never emptied. Portion sizes were not large but I left satisfied with my meal. Medium rare lamb seemed to be cooked medium. Over a great experience.

The room are clean and comfortable bed. Amazing views from the room. The hotel has tour activities to Mount Cook and vicinity area. Just need to book in advance. Good place to rest and relax in this place. Pricey hotel rate although.

Views were fantastic. Room extremely old and dated, was surprised at the quality considering how much we paid for a superior room. Water pressure was bad, amenities too basic. food was okay, but not value for money at all. Oh, and expect to pay for wifi!!!

The cheaper option Lodge is extremely close by and I reckon you wouldn't trade off too much in terms of comfort if you stay there instead. Views are almost the same from both accommodations

Would recommend friends to skip staying at the hermitage, and take the trails for the views instead.

Great location. Perfect for enjoying from the surroundings. The room is big but not very comfortable, the bathroom small, the pressure water flow is very low, not enough for having a right shower. There is a strange smell inside the room, similar to paint. The wifi is not included in a standard reservation, something that is commonly present in all hotels around the world.

Views are spectacular, however this is obviously what you are paying for because the rooms are extremely average. Haven't had to pay for wifi in about 10 years but the hotel does have a surcharge! The walls were paper thin and you can hear people in the next room going to the toilet. Our room was clean but there were some dubious stains and dried fluids on the wall. I would say this place feels more like a motel than a hotel. Unfortunately this place will still do well as you don't have many options in the area. Hopefully the management will bring this dinosaur into the 21st century soon as other hotels in NZ are amazing for a similar price.

Very remote hotel with fantastic scenery. Rooms were nice, and wifi was pretty fast.

Reasons why it didn't get five stars:

1) There is no gym here.

2) Some of the stuff in the hotel is a little dated. Locks on the doors and shower heads come to mind.

3) The food was okay, but it wasn't fantastic.

I would recommend this place to friends and family.

Amazing location in the heart of Mt Cook with fantastic views all around. Friendly and warm hotel staff who proved very helpful. The rooms were really nice, though the free wifi (which is priceless at this location) does not extend to the rooms. Food was expensive (unsurprising considering the remoteness) and whilst hotel staff are willing to give lifts to nearby establishments, the Chamois bar is to be avoided at all costs (literally and figuratively). The location is subject to weather conditions in winter and staff are understanding about this when dealing with your bookings. All in all, a fantastic location makes anything else pale in comparison. Strongly recommend a stay here!

Given the price I was expecting a slightly more impressive room. It is clean and tidy but a bit basic for the money. Service at reception was a little hit and miss. Some very helpful some not so.

Of course the best views you could ask for. Rooms reasonably spacious and comfortable. Bath with shower over with SHOWER CURTAIN (EEK). Large picture window for view with small opening vent so little fresh air. Air-conditioning.
Buffet dinner seems expensive at 63 NZ$ but choice is huge and you can eat as much as you like

Breathtaking view from the rooms. It's almost unreal to have this huge mountain just right outside your window. The hotel itself is based right by the national park and all the staffs are super friendly. We were a group of four and got the superior room with two double beds. The room was clean and spacious. WiFi is available at $5 per day and connection was not bad considering where we are located. Would recommend anyone visiting South island to stop by this place. This is also the pick up point for the glacier Explorer tour as well.

Difficult to grade. The facilities are limited by its position just below Mt Cook. It is non-obtrusive and near to the walks and views and the rooms are of a high standard. However, most visitors only stay for one or two nights and a lot come in buses, meaning there is a constant flow of large groups of people moving in or out.

If you can arrange good weather the views I mentioned are some of the best in the world, with the approach up the valley very photogenic.

It is pricey, no question about it, but the location, views, and amenities are hard to beat. Room in the Superior Wing was large with grand views up Hooker Valley (great for photography on those cold mornings!). Beds were large and comfortable.

Enough activities and room around the hotel and grounds for those inevitable cloudy/rainy days, e.g. the Hillary Alpine Centre with several movies, the cafe, the bar/lounge (especially when they have marshmallow roastings). The buffet restaurant is quite expensive -- the menu didn't change for the whole week we were there, which was disappointing, especially for the price.

Overall, a good all-inclusive kind of place if you're willing to splurge.
