Rooms were kind of dirty and staff gave me an uncleaned bed. Other than that the kitchen was not fit for cooking in the mornings. Free bike and surfboard hire did not make up for the lack of cleanliness at this place.

Pacific Coast Lodge is a backpacker who try to create a good atmosphere for everyone. Nevertheless the one night I stayed there was not a really good one
I came there bc I read their ad for jobs in the kiwi business at backpackerboard.co.nz. When I arrived they told me I can start work in three days. I became hopeful, but after I talked to some people at my dorm room my hope decreased. One guy told me he was waiting there for already eight days, another girl was waiting for six, although PCL told them they will start work three or four days after their arrival.
Today I don't know how long they really waited before they start work, but I kept on traveling the next morning and found a kiwi bud thinning job three days later around Te Puke just through a paper on a door. Besides this job isn't in connection with a backpacker, so I can sleep in my car and the campsite I'm staying at the moment is more then three times cheaper then the PCL.
But now the PCL itselfs: First of all it is just a no-go, to sleep with another nine persons in one room without any window you can open! Really yukky!
Nevertheless I have to mention, that the toilets and showers are really clean. Moreover the kitchen has everything and you can chill good at the outside area. I liked also all the photos and paintings on the walls, particularly the one of the pohutukawa tree.
But all this positive things you have also in other backpackers, so in my opinion the Pacific Coast Lodge is not a good place to stay.
I think the other way to explore New Zealand, to stay and sleep in your own car is the more exiting, more flexible, more backpacker-mood, and cheaper one (not if your car brake down). But this decision has to do everyone by it self.response / report this review -

Want work and a good place to stay? This is it! Staff is simply amazing. Beds and showers are not that great but overall it's a very nice place

No hairdryer. No heater. Weak wifi signal. Narrow shower booth and weak water pressure. Noisy at night.

Basic accommodation. Double rooms or bunks with shared bathrooms. Comfy bed and friendly staff though.

Super cool backpacker. Awesome bunch and great management. Loved my stay here, wish I could stay a lol longer. Bars are quite accessible just a few mins walk. Grocery and liquor store right across the street isn't it awesome.
Beach just 5-7 mins walk from the hostel. Would recommend to take mana bus as it picks u up right outside.

PCL is a fun place to stay with an awesome crowd to hang out with. I have had many a night out on the town with other guest from here. The staff are also light hearted and easy going and willing to help out whatever there is needed. Whether here for work of just a couple of days its the best place to stay in the Mount Maunganui for less then $50.

Wow. Just amazing. I didn't know what to expect. It was outstanding. The people and staff there make you feel like apart of the family really fast. I never new haow to surf but people there showed me and I got really good and they also do free surf board rentals for guest. Will 100% be coming back.

This hostel is the place to be at the Mount! Great vibes, nice people, comfi beds and the staff really makes you feel at home. Being a solo female traveller that is exactly what I'm looking for.
They have free surfboards to hire and the beach is just up the road! Best location ever! I was planning to stay for a few days but ended up staying for a few weeks! It's a home away from home. Solid backpackers hostel recommended for long term workers. Free rental of surfboards and bikes is a massive plus!
