Good services and food options. Great place to stay if you are going for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. There is the shuttle bus stop just across the hotel and the hotel also provides options for a pack lunch for your tramping.

Poor view from room with sounds and smells from kitchen. They said they had no alternatives. However it was spacious and clean. Restaurant main course was poor and over priced. Pudding was excellent though. Whole atmosphere was a bit stuffy and staff were least friendly of nz people we've met.

Driving up to the Chateau it's absolutely beautiful, however, the interior is in much need of a renovation. Our room was spacious but our tub had multiple burns and there was no air conditioning. The pool and fitness center is very out dated and not worth the price tag.

Absolutely adore the Chateau. Perfect couples getaway. Really good prices, go for a Standard Room it's great value. Love the little idiosyncrisies of the hotel & the fact it's not in perfect condition - adds to the charm! We also stayed in a Heritage King room for our honeymoon - the room was amazing but bathrooms desperately need to be replaced. Book a room during school holidays so you can get in on the buffet dinner - it's great value & quality, only wish it was on offer throughout the rest of the year!

While the period building is atmospheric and can take you back in time, the food quality is disappointing. Supermarket quality of bread with cheap condiments disguised under fancy names. While the place tries to be upmarket and smart - the staff will politely send you to the water station. Staff is polite - but this is not a remedy for subpar quality. Pity as the place has a huge potential to be of international standard.

The staff was friendly and attentive. They even fixed our drinks when we weren't satisfied with the way they were made the first time. The food and service at the Pihanga were fabulous! The hotel itself could use a bit of renovation and modernization, but kept up well. Breakfast buffet had a good variety to choose from.

Lovely period building. Very attentive staff. Great restaurants & bars. Hot pool is great at the end of a skiing day. If I were to nit pick, some things are looking a little tired, but it's an old building.

Chateau Tongariro is like a step back in time.
All the staff are smartly dressed, and have a friendly disposition.
The main lobby is a wonderful place to be.
Views over the adjacent mountains, capped with snow if you're lucky enough.
The rooms all have a similar old-school charm.
It was VERY cold when we arrived, and stepping into our toasty-warm room, (heated by the original steam radiator system!) was very relaxing.

The room overall, was wonderful.
However, the bathrooms need to be brought up to a more modern standard.
I think this can be achieved without sacrificing the rustic charm, but the shower was so bad it was damn near not even worth the effort.

We also dined in the restaurant, which was a lovely experience.
However, for the money we paid, I would have actually expected not only better quality food, but a more satisfying meal.
The dining was definitely the most disappointing part of the visit, so if you can eat elsewhere, I suggest you do so.

At the end of the day, I really enjoyed my stay, and would love to return one day.

Hotel was beautiful. Bed was so bit soft, buffet breakfast was lackluster. The jacuzzi tub in the bathroom was amazing after a long day hiking.

Luxurious hotel in the heart of Whakapapa village, definitely an older crowd. Breakfast is a disappointment of a typical buffet style like everywhere else. Beds are really confortable and service is friendly.

Looks great from the outside. Very tired on the inside. Overpriced. Plunge pool feels like being on a sinking cruise ship. The cafe waitresses are very polite, but the food bore an uncanny resemblence to selections from Countdown's frozen aisle.

The Chateau is located in a NZ national park and the buildings and business are Malasian owned now. It is an iconic place to stay for a Kiwi and is one of the older hotels in NZ. Whilst old the building and rooms are reasonably tidy though not 5 star. Getting a booking in their resturants is difficult as they are not run at full capacity and they run a policy of bumping you downstairs to their cafe or down the road to their pub.
Book dinner before your stay to avoid dissapointment.

The Chateau is as pretentious as it sounds. The staff did not make eye contact as we checked in. We were hurried through the lobby so as not to disturb an imminent wedding. The velvet drapery is faded and dusty. The restaurant service was terrible and the food was poor for the price - however we were given a free meal because our mains were served over an hour after our entree. Great location though.
