Doing the cave alone is not recommended. That said, it is well worth doing this.

Probably the best thing I did in New Zealand. We had a 3/2 surfing wetsuit and we're nice and warm. If passing there again, I will do it once more. Even peole in short and bikinis did it(but it looked like it was quite qold)

Stop here and have a nice walk on the paths down to the river. Really nice on a good day. You can also go caving here, but take a headtorch etc, before you start out.

Went through the cave, nice 40mins experience & completely free!
But why did no one warn me about the HUGE ASS SPIDERS INSIDE!! Me and my friend freaked out when we saw the first of 4 spiders total.
Do not enter if you are afraid of spiders!

Small walks to the actual cave. You should make sure that you have warm clothing with change, headlamps with extra batteries, etc..

You could easily drive past this spot without realising the spectacular sights. You can walk down to see the Cave Stream disappearing underground into a limestone outcrop and then walk 10 mins to see it re-emerge on the other side. You can scramble through the underground passage of the river but you need to be prepared. YOU WILL NEED two waterproof torches, a wet suit and hard hat. Read all of the warning signs and enter at your own risk. DO NOT ENTER ON YOUR OWN. DO NOT ENTER IF IT IS RAINING OR IF RAIN IS FORECAST. Telephone coverage in the Mountains is very limited and help can take a LONG time to get to you. Accept responsibility for your own actions and decisions. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

A great fun splash through a cave. Be warned, the water is powerful and waist deep in places. A head torch per person is advisable. It takes about an hour to go from end to end.

Truly unique experience being able to traverse a cave under the hill. Definitely take the bright equipment do not and try to do this by yourself.

One of the most amazing place to visit on South Island. The caves are beautiful and the view around is breathtaking. Cave is completely underground and you can go from one end and come from other end if you have proper equipment. A must visit place if your around Christchurch.

Such a beautiful place to visit. We went in mid-late Jan. Doing the Cave Stream walk was definitely one of my favourites on the south island. We went with a group of 4 which meant my friends were able to give me a bit of a leg up when needed in some parts of the cave - some bits were a bit steep!

Take headlamps if you can (with fresh batteries!) and maybe an extra torch. I wore merino leggings, a merino long sleep top, a hoodie and a beanie and I started to sweat even though the water was shockingly cold - the merino really retains your body heat. And to think I was worried I'd need a wetsuit - the merino was perfect. Don't underestimate the cold though - although the merino retained my body heat I also had trouble breathing in the first & deepest section of the cave where the water came up to my chest - that first dip is freezing! I also wore wool socks and some sneakers.
