Mexican rental car companies in general deserve only one star with the scam they call "insurance", (and you all should be aware, and accept it, but I digress.) This company, especially this location however, has taken the shady mexican, bribe driven, screwing over tourists, with no conscience at all, stereotype to a whole new level.
DO NOT RENT FROM FOX!
Unless you are intent on recreating one of your favorite movies where the main character gets completely screwed from the moment they hit the ground, I would suggest ANY other rental car provider in San Jose will offer a better chance of not starting your vacation wishing you had gone to Hawaii instead. In fact you may actually have a chance of getting a car!
We have used this location for years, but never again. After nearly 2 hours of arguing this fact along with, we had a reservation, agreed to all the insurance, and were actually early, we finally walked away from the blank-staring 20 year old, masquerading as a managerwithout a car. All the while, other customers walking in with ("pre-paid" we were told,) reservations, being processed. We were told they had no cars.
What we finally concluded was, they had plenty of cars, for those who were coming in through a time-share company that had indeed pre-paid, or agreed to pay much more than us. Our reservation, made 3 months prior, was worthless. Our vacation was about to become A LOT more expensive!
Luckily, we had the means to pay a lot more and able to walk next door to the somewhat less shady Thrifty, and get a car. Others were not so able. We have, er had, a reservation with FOX for our next trip in March when we are bringing our 5 kids. Imagining this same scenerio, while herding 5 kids, makes my stomach turn.
Bye FOX! NEVER AGAIN!
Do yourself a favor, use a BIG American company, with customer service cares, who actually honor their promises of reservations, pay for the fake insurance, and have a wonderful time in Mexico!
Let me begin by saying I was a dedicated customer for Fox as I travel to Cabo 2-3x per year. The experience below still has me flabbergasted. On January 1, 2018, I was victim along with 5 other customers to this rental company not having our reserved cars even though we all had our reservation paperwork. The excuses ranged from we were late (the rental agreement hold cars for up to 6 hours and none of us were late), blank stares telling us to go to another company, and they simply ran out of cars.
I along with the other customers observed the staff giving other customers cars. When we asked why they were getting a vehicle, we were told it was "pre-paid". I told them their own website, Travelocity, Expedia etc. does not allow pre-payment, so could they explain how these people pre-paid, and againblank stares. We believe this company is getting kickbacks with timeshare people and were screwing people with reservations.
DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! I was forced to go to another company and pay 3x the price because we were desperate for a vehicle (we had to travel to La Paz).
This clown show of a company will not hold a reservation - this happened to dozens of customers when I was there, not sure how they avoided a full scale riot. They also couldn't care less that they mess up your vacation plans, they woman I dealt with seemed downright giddy about it.
Fox has been good for us. We've used them several years in a row. Once you give in to the insurance in Mexico car rental is easy. Something new in 2017 is they encouraged us to return the car on empty for no extra fee.
Ok. There is so much to say about this company, first off the estimate for a convertible was $159 in the email when I got there it ended up being $471 with insurance and $407 without; plus deposit for the car. Secondly GET THE INSURANCE if your going to go with this company because it comes with a cellular phone that has a hotspot which came in handy also started with 60 minutes and 60 free text to send/receive, and they add 60 more every 24hrs. Also when they ask where your staying "I wouldn't tell them" it's not needed, just give the name of another hotel. Reason being I have heard stories of people waking up to a damaged or stolen car. LAST BUT NOT LEAST! Remember I mention I ordered a convertible! So on the website it told me that I would get a Ford Mustang or Jeep. As much as I didn't want the Jeep I was willing to settle for it. OMG they pulled up with my car it was a freaking tiny Fiat! I didn't even know what the heck a Fiat 500 was. But any who it turned out wonderful, got us every where we need to go and it was a drop top!! So I had to improvise!! Oh yeah and p.s record a video of the full body of the car Everytime you park it for the day, and state the date time in your video. #thinkahead
SCAM!! DO NOT USE FOX IN LOS CABOS!!!!
If you buy Expedia insurance you just got ripped. Either give them an extra $200 for fake insurance or they'll charge $2500 on a CC. The customer service Reps are slow and rerarded. They charge whatever they want on your card. If you have a problem call the policia and you can speak to a truck with masked men with machine guns because that's what the police are. At the toll road booths there's armed police with machine assault rifles and shot guns to make sure you pay the $4.
I rented the car on Expedia, bought the suggested insurance because lets face it.4 wheeling in Mexico, I didn't want any surprises. They try to strong arm you into buying more insurance when I refused they asked for a 1500.00 credit card deposit. They gave me a jeep with the idiot lights on said they checked it and it was just fine. A day into the trip the thing would not shift into overdrive. Getting stranded in the desert in Mexico was NOT going to happen returned it but had to waste the entire day around the airport waiting for someone to return the jeep. Finally got another one which ran fine. Renters beware.
I concur with the other user that it appears most people reviewing this outlet don't understand how renting cars works in mexico, particularly the provisions regarding insurance. Many well rated credit cards provide the required level of protection when you use them to reserve and pay for the car- if you don't have that benefit, of course you are going to have to pay for insurance, which in many cases is more than the cost of the rental itself. Being surprised by that sucks, but it isn't the rental company's fault. Even in the case where you decline protection from the company in favor of another form of protection, they will likely put a several thousand dollar hold on your credit card. This is just how things work.
As for the company and the people at the agency, my experience was professional and courteous and I'd definitely rent from them again, especially if they were the cheapest (which they were this time, by far).
I asked for a convertible online and got quoted a price of 220 online. When I went to get the car they one did not have any convertibles, and they also ended up paying 500$$ for an SUV. Terrible service. I will not be going back here.
Place sux. They charge you an extra $130 for insurance or take $2500 or of your credit card as a guarantee, no warning before paying in Mexico.
Great efficient customer service. Can't ask for much more
Rental car business in Mexico is a straight scam. Fox is no exception here. The rates that you see on Expedia and other travel sites are just a bait to get you into the rental center. Once you are at a remote location, you are held hostage to random $ figures. They will pretty much give you their rates then. All your paperwork from Expedia etc. is worth nothing. In my case, I had purchased insurance via Expedia so I denied all additional products and after 20 min fight they handed me a car and I drove it away. I knew that the scam was not over. On return, even though there was no ding/scratches, they will start saying please pay for the damages. You can fight and their tactics is that you will miss your flight because they will keep on delaying things. Pass paperwork from one person to another In the end, you have to pay else you are not getting your paperwork back. These people are scam artists in uniform and more so all the American websites are helping them run the show successfully. I don't know whether they are clean players in the car rental business in Cabo, but these guys not!
My husband needed a vehicle last minute and Fox had cars available. I made the reservation online. The confirmation email I received listed the price at $382.80. When my husband picked up vehicle, they charged him $520! He was not able to open his email due to just arriving in country to notice the price difference. When he received his credit card statement, they charged him $578.86! I've attempted to contact twice but no one is replying to our complaint. What a racket. We've had good experiences in the US with Fox Rent a Car, but never again will we rent from this location.
