Kumana National Park is paradise for local and migratory waterfowl and wading birds. Park located in near to Hanmbanthota Kumana is contiguous with Yala National Park. Kumbukkan Oya forms the southern boundary of the national park. Lagoons and tanks support the extensive birdlife of the national park. Wonderful place in Sri Lanka

Some 20 lagoons and tanks support the extensive birdlife of the national park.[5] The lagoons are shallow with depths less than 2 metres (6.6 ft). Kumana villu is subject to occasional inundation with seawater. The elevation of the area ranges from sea level to 90 metres (300 ft). The mean annual temperature is 27.30 °C (81.14 °F) and the area receives 1,300 millimetres (51.18 in) of annual rainfall.
The Kumana area is part of an ancient civilization that goes back to the 3rd century BC. Rock inscriptions belonging to the 2nd and 1st centuries BC have also been found in the region. The Kumana National Park lies on the route of the traditional annual foot Pilgrimage to the Hindu temple at Kataragama.Both Tamil and Sinhalese communities take part in this pilgrimage.

The number of birds observed in the national park has fallen in recent years. Environmentalists and wildlife lovers have expressed their concern over a road planned to be constructed from Kirinda to Panama which will run along the coastline of the park.

Paddyway has arranged a fantastic daytrip to Kumana National park for us when we were staying in Arugam Bay. We saw alot of birdlife inside the park which was fantastic for us as we really enjoy birdwatching. We also saw elephants, boars, different kinds of deers, monitors, crocodiles, mungoose, buffalos, hare and a leopard. Highly recomended if you enjoy birdlife.

Good place for wild photographs. Make sure you visit between 2 and 5pm to see the wild animals. Safari trip with their vehicle is good experience. But we can bring our on vehicle for Rs.500 which is cheap.

A treasure. In rainy season the forest is extremely beautiful. You can see practically any animal found in Sri Lanka, at Kumana. However, it is most famous for its birds. This park is also a Ramsar wetland. If conditions are right, in breeding season you can see thousands of water birds nesting. If you are lucky you will see Leopard and Sloth bear. Though there are significant numbers of these animals in the park it is hard to spot them as the number of tracks (gravel roads) is lower than, say, Yala national park. Also this park is continuous with Yala across a river (Kumbukkan oya). Animals can cross ( so can 4 WD vehicles with permission) from Yala to Kumana and vice versa when water level is low.
The long drive to reach the park from Potuvil/ Arugam bay itself is unforgettable with so much to see on either side. Close to the park gate you can take a detour to see the fascinating Okanda beach - area being popular among surfers. Breath-taking Buddhist rock monastery Kutumbigala is near by too.

Located on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, Kumana National Park is located around 391 kilometres southeast of Colombo and covers an area of around 35,664 hectares. The park is particularly well known for its bird life, particularly for the large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds that call the park home. Between April and July, tens of thousands of birds migrate to the park, using the land as both nesting and breeding ground.
