This is a unique place with its decor and atmosphere and you must give it a try if you're in Kandy. We went for dinner and it was a good experience. However, there are a few important things that need to be changed. 1. Food - 1/5. Dinner is to be chosen from 3 options (set price per person) and it costs as much as a 5 star hotel in Kandy. We went there knowing that the quality of food is below par and there were no surprises. After an hour long wait, the tuna dish I ordered looked like cat food and it was bland and tasted like canned fish. Definitely the food does not match its price. 2. Hygiene - 1/5. The washrooms were unclean, old and some were even without a door. There's dust and cobwebs everywhere. It will not be up to a lot of people's expectations. 3. Service - 2/5. The person who runs front of house was lethargic and almost looks unwelcoming. We had trouble parking and didn't get help which almost turned us back (not particularly a busy day). The waiter was nice though. 4. Ambience - 5/5. There's a lot of detail everywhere you look and has a cozy feeling which is the sole reason for its popularity. Certainly worth giving a try.

The art is nice however i wasnt impressed. A lot of art was created recently and it is not from Helga. The hotel is a little bit worn down and not clean. It is interesting to see it anyway, but i wouldnt pay to spend the night there..

Well, I’ve been there for watching the place. Didn’t stay, for me it’s looks very nice and important colonial history place. Also screen painting are interesting.. when you are on holiday in SL and staying kandy just go and have a look..!!!

A very special experience not to be missed. Full of wonderful paintings and exquisite things to feast your eyes on and a lovely garden to relax in. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived by the most lovely staff and the food was also delicious. Helga’s Folly is an exotic home from home.

Went for dinner, really good 3 course dinner for 20 USD. Amazing place worth visiting for a room, dinner or just a drink. This place is out of the ordinary and should be experienced!

It's amazing to walk around and the rooms were very spacious. The mattress needs upgrading as it sags and with satin sheets, yes satin you slip right into the dip. Have to say the food at dinner was disappointing, not many choices and my vegetable curry was dried out. It could have been a bad night. Would still recommend

This place is sure surprising by its look but that's it.
The house seems to have never been cleaned up (spiders web are everywhere), the staff is rude and the food awful.
It is outrageous that this place get so much coverage in travel guides or newspapers compared to other really nice location is this area. It is an insult to Sri Lanka's people trying to build great guest house and hotels.response / report this review -

Loved this hotel, went to visit it during a rainy day in Kandy and was very surprised how much I enjoyed my self. Cost $3/4 dollars for a drink and then the entrance fee is waved or pay the fee bad don't have a drink.
The whole place has eccentric and wacky artwork and furniture. It's design is amazing. So much effort and determination has gone into creating Helgas Folly and hits not worth missing.

This is not your usual hotel. But an out of this world experience. Every square inch of this establishment's walls and ceiling is covered. In a work of fantasy art. Once in your lifetime you should stay or at least dine at awesome "Helga's"!

Part hotel and part tourist attractions. I came here for the latter reason. You are welcome to buy a drink and/or meal and walk around and take photos. It's massively OTT and garish but that is what makes it memorable. Staff are nice and fun place to visit 1 of the most memorable places in Kandy

A unique experience for sure. The decor and the aura is the main attraction to Helga's folly and it will keep you there with it's mystique. Oh and the food is nice too! A must visit!

Always love staying at or visiting Helga's Folly for an atmospheric drink or dinner in the evening. It's a place no other and cannot be reviewed in terms of a regular hotel as a) it's completely unique and b) it's more of a guesthouse/home. There is no clever marketing ploy to create something unusual for the sole purpose of making money, it is a place of genuine passion, love and vision. She charges an entrance fee as there have been instances of people stealing- and as it's her family home, objects of great sentimental value. This seems to reduce the chance of it happening. It's not perfect when compared to 'starred emporiums' as is written on the website (in bold on the very opening page) but being in a world of it's own in such an unassuming place as Kandy, a visit is a once in a lifetime experience which I am always honored to be able to have.

Ok, i didn't actually stay here but if you tour Kandy and you are keen to see something that does not, in anyway, fit your picture of Kandy..this is the place for you. You have to pay USD 3 to tour the place and they have a decent restaurant. But it's the surreal art and eerie/creepy vibe that attracts most people to this place. Never have i ever found a place that is both grotesque yet beautiful as Helga's folly.

I want to rate them higher, but for a hotel/place to stay it was pretty gross. The bed looked like it would break at any second, the shower was full of dirt, dead bugs, and black mold (thts a health hazard, right?). My pillow had a smear of blood on it which really irked me, and in general nothing felt very clean. The house and its history are fantastic though, and for $3 you can walk around and see the art. Its worth the $3. Breakfast there was also lovely, and the people working at the hotel are friendly and obviously interested in making your stay as comfortable as possible. TL;DR: go, pay $3 and walk around, maybe have a meal, but DON'T stay there.

Nice place for a quiet drink. Not very crowded. Excellent view! Spooky interior which was unique. Poor, lethargic service. Almost as if they didn't want us there.

Spooky place. A change for Kandy. Entrance 3$ is abit of a joke. Could charge something in SLR. Anyway a good place to visit for a change.

It's an interesting, but really crazy, sometimes quite scary place. If you drink in the bar you can go around in the house free. On the end of the top floor corridor you can find the swimming pool. Brrr

The weird and wonderful home from home. For a short stay it's a must. The communal areas are fascinating the story of the family is fascinating, take time to drink it in. The rooms are old dark and comfortable, but dont expect a power shower. Add some colour to your life and stimulate the mind and enjoy Unique homestay experience (with servants included)!

Went for a drink, the décor was fantastic and the views great. I really wanted to love it, but the service was appalling, and this led to a stiff and dull atmosphere that even the quirkiest touches could not compensate for. When we ordered a beer they came back and said they didn't have any, so we asked for tea instead - but they didn't have any tea either. The staff weren't at all apologetic for this and came across as rude and stand offish. I really wish someone would take on this place with some heart and love (also tea and beer), as it could be a lovely place to stay or just grab a drink.
