This temple in the Roluos group of temples outside Siem Reap are right on the incoming flight path into the airport, and was the first site I saw from the air before my arrival. Often skipped by tourists gravitating toward sites around Angkor Wat and Angkor Tom, it's worthwhile to visit this, the oldest mountain style temple in the greater Angkor reigon. Built in the late 9th century by Indravarman I an early Hindu king, there is still a little Buddhist temple operating on the site. So much less crowded than other sites, one can really feel the solitude around the rice farms of Presat Bakong.

Hot place for the tourist. Arrange this place together with Tonlé Sap lake.
This temple is very special, not like the other one. it only has one main tower.

Prasat Bakong late/the end of 9th Century built to Pray to Hindu Gods. The tops of Prasat Angkor Wat/Prasat Visnuno and many Angkor towers copied from the tower of Bakong; and the style of Prasat Phnom Bakeang also copied for the Bakong also!

Been here from Diem Tarp by bike alone. It took 40 min to come along the main Street. Around 2/3 of the way I turned right and I used the local roads trough villages and school. More healthy! Less dust and truck. With Google maps there is no way to get lost. I suggest you to do in this way.
Some guys went to the temple in quad.

This place is a bit far away from the main but worth a visit. You can visit here when sunset.

The ruins group of Roluos. It damaged by rain , heat , our foot stamped for long time. Some lacked parts had been repaired , but disappointed to different from original shape. I hope those will be restored accurately.

The most impressive member of the Roluos Group, sitting at the center of the first Angkorian capital, Hariharalaya. Bakong stands 15 meters tall and is 650x850m at the outer wall. Constructed by the third Angkorian-era king as his state-temple, Bakong represents the first application of the temple-mountain architectural formula on a grand scale and set the architectural tone for the next 400 years. The temple displays a very early use of stone rather than brick. Though begun by Indravarman I, Bakong received additions and was expanded by later kings. The uppermost section and tower may have been added as late as the 12th century AD. Some of the lintel carvings, particularly on the outer towers, are in very good shape. Picturesque moat and vegetation surround Bakong.

Bakong is the first temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer Empire. The temple is located away from the city center, but it is worth a visit if you have time. It is the largest and most impressive of the Roluos group.

The Roluos group of temples maybe out of the way but it is definitely worth the trouble to visit them, especially Bakong Temple and Preah Ko. Bakong is bigger than Preah ko and is a temple mountain. There are several tiers and it is pretty rundown making the stairs a challenge to climb. As with most temple mountain, the view of the surrounding greenery is pleasant and calming. There is not much crowd, making it a wonderful place to rest and enjoy the serenity.

Guides are very strict about the closing time. The temple is well damaged. You can't even tell that the nandi statue is nandi. Interesting steps.

Beautiful temple, located in the middle of holy lake on top of artificially built holy mountain. In order to get to the holy mountain, you need to cross the naga bridge (nagas are serpent guardians of Khmer temples). You will not be able to drive all the way to the temple, rather you'll have to do a short walk - bring some water with you, it can be really hot and you will not be able to get back to your car quickly to grab it, while there is no shop selling water within temple ruins. The path to the temple is pretty romantic, having you walk through nice trees and flowers towards the magnificent temple site, pretty similar to the Borobudur temple in Java. Not much of wall carvings still remains, but guardian animals placed around the terraces of the stepped pyramid temple are still recognizable and really beautiful.

This temple resembles the exact structure of the temples in India when we compare the stairs. Each step is made of a single piece of rock long and wide. It is a Sivan temple. There are sandstone structures around which I assume is later addition when Vishnu worship came in. If you have been to all the temples in Siem Reap, especially the Angkor Thom area, you can find two different distinctions. All the black rock temples belongs to Siva which was built earlier and the all the red sand stone temples belongs to Vishnu which were either built later or were converted into one from Sivan temple. This is nice temple to visit during sunset.
