Japanese-style inn living, quite simple and good, with onsen attached. Be prepared to soak with other nude guys and girls (not mixed, sorry)

I lived there for about 6+ months in 1992. Loved it. At least I remember loving it. Checking out the pictures it appears that the place has not changed a bit :-)

Located very close to several restaurants and the subway station. Nice quiet neighborhood. Stayed in the Japanese style room. The room has wifi, a table, and closet space. Found the bed to be slightly uncomfortable, probably due to familiarity with western style beds. But this hosts offers western style rooms as well :) There is both a Japanese and Western style toilet as well as a shared kitchen. All in all, a great bang for your buck.

We found green peace to be decent for what it has to offer, but a little dismal compared to other hostels/1 star hotels we've stayed at. The rooms are private and come in various styles (Western/Japanese/etc.); we stayed in a Japanese style room. Our room had a (very) small table, a cushion to sit on, a cushion with a back (both to be used as chairs), a shelf, lamp on the table with wifi information taped to it, a kind of rudimentary combination lock I for the door when you leave, a closet with a lot of space and some provided hangers, and two rolled up beds (Japanese style). We found the rooms to be pretty nice for what they are, but, as westerners, found the beds to be a little hard to sleep in and left us sore. The rest of the hostel is honestly a little rundown but has what you need. There are two bathrooms, one Japanese style the other Western style, that you are required to clean after "making it stinky" (their words). There is one shower that I found to be the most run down portion of the place, but that might just be due to how vulnerable showers can make people feel in a new place. There is a kitchen to use upstairs with two sinks, one for cleaning dishes you use and the other for brushing your teeth, etc. There is also a kind of dining room on the main floor where people (about maybe 4-6) can eat and watch TV. Slippers must be worn at all time past the front door and outside of your room. Overall, this place was what we needed it to be, a place to come back to sleep, wash up in the morning before we headed out again, and store most of our belongings. I believed, however that we could have done better in the city, considering the condition of the place, but the price was good. What makes this place, however, is the management who are very kind and give you the tour when you get there, explaining all the rules and such and where everything. They will do anything they can to make your stay better.

Compare to Tokyo, Kyoto is not so convenient in travelling but this hostel is located in quite a good place. 3 minutes of walking to Matsugasaki station and bus stop, near this place, there are some famous tourist attractions like Kinkakuji. Kyoto Imperial CastleThe owner can speak English. She has 2 cute cats ^v^
But I must warn you that this place is not so clean. Only suitable for backpackers travelling with tight budget as me.

After seeing some of the bad reviews, I figured I should share my experience at Green Peace last summer (2011). I was there for two weeks, didn't see any roaches or rats. The bed and rooms are clean, the bathroom and kitchen is quite old, but still reasonably clean. It is nothing like the en-suites in five star hotel, but if you are looking for a decent clean place to stay for the amazing price, I would certainly recommend this place.

Oh, and the host was really nice too.
