I came here to get my certificate of eligibility for getting married. At first I was really nervous by the bad reviews here. Lucky that my experience was a good one! The process was smooth and the attitude of the officers was polite enough. I got my certificate in 2 hours. This place deserves better rating.

So here’s the deal for EVERYTHING you need to know about getting a visa. The absolute best time to go is before it opens. The doors open up at least an hour beforehand, so you can get a number and start the paperwork while you wait. The visa office opens at 10am, and we got there around 9am (and we still had 25 people in front of us). We waited a little over 2 hours for our number to be called, and our visas were processed in just 25 minutes or so. (We had flights to Vietnam later the very same day, so they may have given us some priority.) All-in-all, plan to spend 2.5-3 hours there, and get there as soon as possible.
You walk in and the first thing you’ll want to do is get a number from the machine in the corner. Visa applications in various languages are next to the number machine.
The application is a one-sided sheet of paper and you’ll need to glue a “passport” photo onto it—even if you have your passport with you. There’s a passport photo booth directly outside the visa office door and it costs 9,000 yen. (There are also plenty of other passport processing photo booths at train stations and outside some Lawson markets—so whatever works for you.)
Scissors and glue are provided there in the visa office—there’s just one set that visitors can share. There are no pens that I saw, so definitely bring a pen!
A great couple other things to note: we came prepared with forms filled out online and printed, but the guy at the bcounter preferred the forms there at the visa office. (Good thing we filled those out just in case while we were waiting!) Also, they have three counters that help visitors to the office. Only one of them services visas, so that’s one of the reasons it takes awhile.

I really do not understand why this place has a 2.5 rating. My experience was almost 5 star and I got the quickest visa of my life (10 minutes). Having been to over 30 countries, I always assume a week or more is necessary to get the visa of the destination country but Vietnam turned out to be the fastest.
There was a huge waiting line(hence the 4 star rating) and I had to wait for almost 2 hours for my turn but after my number was called, it took me 10 minutes to get the visa! The form is extremely simple and they didn't even check my residence card/air ticket. Fill up the form with a photo and submit at Quay 1, wait until they call your ticket number in Quay 3, pay the money and get your visa (Tourist) on your passport.
People need to realize that this is not a shopping mall. It is a government office with some rules. If you follow the rules (which are simple) and are patient, you are fine. They make sure to process the applications for tickets issued before closing time.
There was a local man who tried to get in after the staff had stopped accepting morning applications. He insisted on preferential treatment and was cursing the embassy unnecessarily. Great to see that nobody listened to him and he was forced to leave empty handed.

Similar experience to the other posts here. As an Australian citizen I paid 14500 yen for a 3 month multiple entry tourist visa(no joke).thought this was a bit excessive compared to what I read it should be. I arrived around 14:15 and the whole process took around an hour. Things to note:
- Bring your passport and a passport photo
- When you enter you can get a visa application form beside the middle window if you don't already have one printed out
- Fill out the form, they will give you exactly the dates you ask for so if you want the 3 month visa put the full 3 months
- Stick your photo to the form (pens and glue were there when I wrote this)
- Hand your form and passport into the middle window, receive a number and go take a seat
- They don't speak English (or refuse to) so your number will likely be called out in Japanese
- Expect to wait 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on volume of people
- When you find out your number is called out, go to the window (left window in my case) and pay the money
Not the best experience like other people have said but if it's any consolation you get a visa the same day.response / report this review -

ベトナムの観光ビザ申請のために利用。ビザ申請に関して係員の対応は事前に聞いていたほど遅くはなかった。駅から少々歩く。場所自体は分かりにくいわけではないので比較的すぐにアクセス可。

代々木八幡駅から10分程歩くと、住宅街に忽然と現れます。大使館の方々の対応は良く、聞けば親切に教えてくれます。即日ビザ発行いただきました。
