An excellent ryokan, at a high price, and where the bathroom in the room does not fit. It seems from a far worse hotel. Excellent situation of the weather allows to enjoy it.

Definitely worth staying at. The onsen was pretty good and has good views but can do better with a bit more ambience . Really friendly staff. The night bar has some really insane drinks

This was one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and makes sure that the stay is as nice as possible. We started with getting an upgrade because there was still a better room available. The room was spacious, basically made of three rooms. It was very clean and had a modern Japanese/western fusion design.
We even got a free ticket for a drink at the terrace bar. We could sit on the heated terrace with the feet in a foot bath, surrounded by lit up autumn trees. Beautiful!
The highlight is the open air hot spring with the view on the forest. Ideal for relaxing and also a very comfortable temperature.
The breakfast was great as well. We got a delicious traditional Japanese breakfast. We were asked for allergies/preferences several days before via mail, so they made us a pescetarian meal. They additionally offer a buffet including both Japanese/western food.

We didn’t find the location inconvenient at all, as it was very close from the highway exit. It’s actually very convenient if you can rent a car.
Close enough to Shirakawago, only about 30 minute drive through the cherry-tree-lined road. You can get to the hotel just within 10 minutes after getting off of the highway, and enjoy this lovely scenery.
The room was clean and spacious, with the design of a mixture of Western and Japanese. The living room was equipped with a couch, which was very helpful (in some other Japanese inns, there were no chairs or couches, so that we had to “seiza” on the floor which can be painful).
Dinner was absolutely fabulous, much better than the expensive restaurants in Tokyo. We had Hida-beef “kaiseki” (Japanese traditional dinner course) and sashimi. They prepared duck meat and potato gratin for my wife who does not eat raw fish and soy sauce, and this gratin was so fantastic, that we wished we could take it back home! If you have any special food preference, I recommend you contact the hotel beforehand.
Their spa was one of the cleanest, and finest hot spring I have ever experienced in Japan. The clean water continuously flows 24 hours, so that you can take a dip whenever you like.
Although the staff couldn’t speak English, it didn’t bother us at all. They were friendly, and had first class hospitality.
For those who are considering of visiting Kyoto after or before Takayama, I highly recommend you rent a car, since the train goes a long way round whereas it only takes 2 hours if you drive.
The price is reasonable considering the quality. It will definitely be the highlight of your trip.response / report this review -
