Loved this place! Amazing food and the best people
We had the best time at Volcano Huts. The journey to the huts saw some beautiful landscapes and was the perfect start to our 2 nights at the Huts. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The volcano huts are located in a very picturesque area, with many hikes. Definitely take your hiking boots. The views are worth it!!
The staff was very welcoming and helpful! Food is good in Icelandic standards. The cabin we stayed briefly for a night was very cozy and homey. But the toilet was clogged. It was too late at night so we didn't notify the staff about the issue. There is great scenery and hiking trails nearby. Really enjoy the stay!
Very beautiful, peaceful and quiet place. The scenery is amazing. The hiking trail up to the top of Valahnúkur is so cool to do. We even saw arctic foxes, they are so cute and beautiful.
The room was way more than expected and also had a view that blew me away.
The people that work there are very friendly, helpful and kind. When we arrived we instantly got our key for the room.
The meals were so good! They even have food for people with allergies. For me that’s a big deal because I am lactose intolerant and that was for the first time not a problem at all. They have for everybody with allergies something to eat and drink.
The way to get there is also a lot of fun. Driving through the rivers is nice and fun.
I had an amazing stay at the volcano Huts during my short holidays in October.
After the great off-road drive through the river we arrived at a beautiful scenery. We saw an emergency exercise with a helicopter to save people during winter, a great treat!
Except for this short exercise the place was very peaceful and quiet. It was great to relax due to the solitude.
The people working there were very kind and friendly the moment we arrived. We got the key to our rooms with a great view upon the nature.
We watched a few arctic foxes running around as well, they started coming out when the helicopter had left. Great to see them while they are turning more white since winter is coming.
The food was great and I never ate lamb like this with a great herb mix. They also had everything for an lactose intolerant friend of mine, an unexpected and pleasant experience to have in the middle of nowhere.
The hike in the morning up the mountain next to the huts was great as well.
If possible, I will visit again during Summer.
If the amazing 4x4 drive to Þórsmörk was anything to go by, my expectations were surpassed in every way when arriving at the Volcano Huts. The warm and welcome reception, great food, amazing accommodation (self-sustainable and one with the surrounding nature), amazing hikes through the bright autumn colored hills, looking at and being surrounded by arctic foxes, seeing the aurora for the first time and enjoying awe-inspiring surroundings makes sure there is no doubt in my mind that next time I visit Volcano Huts, I plan on staying there for a few days. The outdoors overnight accommodation was a definite bonus and well worth considering when you’re up here!
Incredible surroundings. Nice campground and cabins within easy reach of great hikes. Choice between huts, camping and glamping tents. Campers have access to kitchen, sauna and a hot tub (lukewarm). For this place the location is everything and the reason to visit. We would come again. You need to take an off-road, 4 wheel drive bus to get here, which adds to the experience. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
The homemade bread and broccoli cheddar soup was really good. It was a fun place to hangout at night as well. They have nice hot chocolate and lots of board games.
The location is awesome, lot of hiking trails around. The staff were really nice too!
The room we were in wasn't that bad but the walls were really thin. The bunk beds weren't that comfortable too. We didn't sleep well the two nights we stayed.
The room was also very expensive and if you add the cost of the bus to cross the Krossá river from the nearest pick up point accessible by car (roughly 100$ roundtrip per person), we're talking at around 900$ CAD for two nights. We were able to sleep 5 nights near the ring road in two different hotels and one studio in Akureyri for that amount of money.
Pricey high season but well worth stay if to have a good bed for the night. Excellent hospitality
After the long trek through the mountains this was sensational.
On the camping place the hot showers and the sauna are included. We loved it!
Staff were really helpful with directions and recommendations for hiking trails, and allowed us to stay in the communal hut while we waited for our bus. We camped elsewhere, but the campsite seemed quiet and peaceful. Highly recommended.
Volcano Huts offers simple, clean accommodation close to the gorgeous hiking trails through Thorsmork. The main lodge offers an excellent backpacker meeting place, and the food is excellent. Looking forward to returning for an overnight - I only visited for lunch and a rest while exploring nearby.
We had a great time here. Rooms are very basic but it is a great base to explore Thorsmork park which it is part of. The restaurant in not cheap but the food was quite good. You can bring your own food and cook in your cabin withe small basic kitchen. A bit like living in a different time for a while.
Great as basecamp and jumping off point. Food, showers, are very nice after hiking.. The sauna is very small and doesn't get that hot but is better than nothing
A little on the pricey side but a great place with all amenities (showers includes) as well as a restaurant. The better campground to finish off the Laugavegur.
A very neat experience! The small cottages were a nice change from camping for us and the location is amazing! A little inconvenient that it can only be accessed by super jeep or the shuttle bus which must be booked beforehand but the hiking was amazing.
Absolutely beautiful. Great food and delicious local beers. Call them horses not ponies. #NotPonies
