Horrible experience, I experienced the same insurance scams as everyone else and walked away. I am disputing charges since we prepaid. We even brought proof of insurance. It's totally shady and seems to be commonplace in Liberia and left us with a really bad initial impression of Costa Rica. Thankfully, we loved the trip AFTER we got over this fiasco. With a country so dependent on tourism, it's shocking the government is fine with these unethical practices.

No surprises with rental. Was aware of additional taxes/insurance before hand. Was told it will take several days to receive deposit reimbursement. GPS accurate but mounting ability limited and input/locating not intuitive. 4x4 handled Costa Rican roads. A/C was great. Stereo so, so. Diesel fuel efficient.

I arrived at Thrifty by accident. My driver pulled in to avoid a rear end collision. Please notice in picture the thick yellow metal gate is up and not visible. Gate is always down! We slid 30 feet or 9.1 meters on extreemly loose gravel into the closed gate. This has happened several times the manager told me as he demanded $100 US to let us out of his money making gate. He had no concern for our safty and never asked if we were OK. He just wanted money for a undamaged gate. The ethics were deplorable and managment is crooked. I am only referring to this particular Thrifty car rental and urge anyone to visit any of the other car rental companys with open non money making gates. PRETTY THRIFTY!

The typical insurance scam. They quoted $450 on the website but I couldn't take the car without paying more than double that once I got there. Even though I have coverage on my credit card they don't accept it without a letter from the bank which they don't tell you about until you get there. When I complained she said if I said anything else she wouldn't rent it to me. The one concession I got was getting 100% coverage for the cost of the $1500 deductible option. When I returned the car she admitted that even if I had the bank letter guaranteeing coverage they wouldn't accept it. Once you are there and have to drive somewhere before dark there isn't much option to go back to the airport to find a better deal and they know they have the advantage. I wouldn't recommend them at all.

Scam! Add 40$/insurance on all bookings. Refuse your credit card insurance! Avoid!

I'm not sure why everybody is so displeased with Thrifty. We were quoted $71 for the week plus $11 for 4 extra days. It doesn't matter where you rent a car from in CR, you WILL pay for the extra insurance. This will take the rental cost to about the same or even cheaper than renting a car in the US because in the US we charge way more per day for the same vehicle class and in return we usually don't need to pay for more insurance. They state these costs in their terms if you read them. Get there, get the total protection plan (this is a $500 deposit that will be returned), and you are covered for just about everything for about $35-40 per day (this is for a compact SUV). I had to pay the underage fee ($20 per day), and this rental was still cheaper than renting a car in the US for the same amount of time.

We were in and out in 15 minutes with a great vehicle. Drop off took 5 minutes. My girlfriend and I had a great experience with thrifty, and I would definitely go back.

I purchased a 3rd party costa rican insurance plan and they refused to honor it. They would NOT rent us a car unless we paid at a minimum an additional $37 US per day. Complete scam. Don't use them.

They advertise $25 a day, but charge an additional $50 a day for insurance when you show up. They will not let you decline it because you are using your credit card insurance or if you purchase 3rd party insurance. SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!

Price tripled once I was dropped off at Thrifty to pickup my car! $25 Expedia reservation, but then they added $50 a day insurance that is mandatory. They will not let you use the insurance on your credit card and the insurance I purchased thru Expedia also did not count!
Extortion! Extortion! False Advertising! Nothing you can do but sign once your there or start walking!
Poor customer service and will never rent from Thrifty again!

The rate advertised on the internet was tripled by the time I walked out the door. It seems to be the business model of the franchise.

Thrifty Corporate will not help as they only act as an intermediary. I would advise to avoid avoid avoid this place.

Note, they force you to pay for their insurance. (They claim it is a Costa Rican law.) Basically it is an extra tourist tax.

Karen our rental agent was amazing!! Rented a SUV with insurance for 10 days for 600. Seems like a lot? Wait until you check other prices. You'll come back to thrifty's
