Unjustified overpriced rental cost and low interest in customer satisfaction. Here are some details.
Three families including ours booked the same class of SUV for our 6 day trip in the end of March in three different agencies. We ended up paying to Avis $453 for a 2WD Nissan SUV with multiple signs of excessive wear (body with dents, dead remote key battery) while others paid $350 (Vamos) and $380 (Economy) for AWD SUVs in much newer condition. We all chose same options in terms of insurance and no other extras. An Avis representative to whom we addressed the question about what contributed to our high price responded "We offer better customer service". LOL!
Upon our arrival to Avis location by the Liberia airport we saw only one representative behind a desk speaking on the phone with a customer and a couple of other representatives walking around and not paying any attention to us. So, my family with two kids and another customer spent 23 mins waiting for that person to finish his phone conversation. Nobody else came to assist. So, when I heard that we paid extra $100 for their "better customer service" I could not help myself and burst into laughter.
I mentioned that they gave us a 2WD car what we regretted many time while driving extremely steep Costa Rican roads. If you're going to visit during their wet season especially, make sure that you rent an AWD. I will need it.

Stay away from this place! They use a third party partners offering seemingly good rates but deny perfectly legitimate third party insurance coverages, just to make you buy their crazy $31-$53/per day coverage when you show up at the counter. My 100% legitimate in Costa Rica coverage was denied, even when it clearly stated Costa Rica on the policy. There are plenty of other rental car companies on the same road that do not act like bandits, use them.

Would be 5+ stars but.. when making my Avis reservation while in USA there was no notification of insurance rules in Costa Rica. Audi SUV 25 days was $1600, insurance was $1500.
Liberia ofc was exceptionally nice, good pleasant service, clean restrooms, etc and closest to airport terminal so they get 5*

Easy, quick transfer from the airport to the rental office. I think this rental company is the closest to the actual airport. They have staff waiting at the airport exit. Clean waiting area with coffee, drinking water, and seating. Friendly staff and nice looking fleet of cars. The main drawback is the amount of time it takes to complete the rental transaction. They encourage you to get insurance, WiFi hotspot for the car and the GPS. I strongly recommend the GPS if you are driving far. You can easily lose cell phone signal on the lonely, dark, winding, uphill roads. WiFi is unlimited at $13/day. Good if you have long drives and multiple people using it in the vehicle. The staff guy was nice enough to preprogram our itinerary into the gps.

I have been a customer of Avis for over 10 years and I'm baffled by how this rental agency works. *****TRAVELERS BEWARE****** if you don't bring a personalized letter from your credit card company, you are required to pay the astronomical rental insurance fee in Costa Rica. Declining the coverage, as is normal in many places, in not sufficient. As others mentioned, your final cost will be more than double the normal rental costs. They charge additional for secondary drivers as well. The icing on the cake was the additional $50.00 dollars for having a missing front license plate which is not covered by the insurance. WOW!

Do not rent for here! We booked a rental that was only supposed to cost us $180 for the week, they wouldn't accept our papers of coverage and made us pay for a bunch of extra stuff. After everything we had to pay $500!! He not only say "if you don't like it go somewhere else", he offered us an extra driver and roadside assistance for free but we ended up getting charge for those, too! Sure dude, we can go somewhere else, how? The other closest rental service is almost a mile away. We wanted them to speak to our credit card company so we asked for the wifi password, he said "the wifi is not working" meanwhile we see the router blinking with all the proper lights. We mentioned this and he gave us a fake password and we were never able to connect to call AMEX. This was the most exhausting 1.5 hours of our trip.

Friendly, efficient and knowledgeable salesperson (Luis). Top-notch! After showing us how to use it, he even pre-programmed the GPS to our hotel. On our previous trip to CR, we rented through another agency down the road and it was not a good experience. Will go with Avis from now on!

Avis has optional insurance services which are not optional when you are renting a vehicle at Liberia Costa Rica.
If you try to decline optional insurance they will ask you for a letter from you credit card company or bank stating they will cover you fin case anything goes wrong. I had same coverage included with my credit cards benefits.
    They don't accept that .
    One way or another
I ended up paying over $250.00 extra on weekly rental for "OPTIONAL" insurance you want to decline but in reality can't.
    Be aware of that practice.
