Lovely little hotel by the beach. Owner is super helpful, and it is a beautiful setting. Much recommended.
Lovely beachside boutique hotel. Nice rooms, great location (close to centre but not too noisy) and excellent staff. Patricia was fantastic
Very nice hotel, the room is comfortable with TV, AC and a safe. There is a small bakery in the same building where you can buy some pastries or have some breakfast.
Great location.direct access to the beach. A really great place to chill out, catch some waves and drink in the Pura Vida!
Very friendly and welcoming staff, and the best French bakery attached to it!
Great place to stay in Costa Rica if you are looking for something that is cheap and comfortable. Service was good and the room was just fine for the price >$80 per night
Please do not make the same mistake that me and my wife did when we stayed at this hotel! We looked at two different rooms in this hotel and finally settled on the larger room with a small balcony directly above the registration desk.
It looked fine on the surface, but as soon as we looked at things closer, it was clear that the room was hardly ever cleaned. The sheets had dozens of black hairs along with multiple "mystery" stains. We found a large splotch of mold on the wall behind the bed and huge cob webs in the legs of the nightstand and other furniture.
We asked the woman at the front desk for a refund and she refused -- apparently she is the owner and is from France originally. She was very rude and didn't seem to think that an unclean room was that big of a deal.
Luckily, we had both brought compact sleeping bags and so we were able to sleep on top of those instead of in the nasty, uncleaned sheets she provided us. She also lied to us about construction being done at the hotel and said that they wouldn't start before 8:30am. This was a lie because we were both woken up by construction at 6:30am.
After telling the woman that we were dissatisfied with the room, she came up so that we could point out everything that was gross and disgusting about it. The best part about the entire exchange was when she said "it's not *that* dirty"like, isn't that kind of an admission that it's at least somewhat dirty? In hindsight, we should have walked away from this place to begin with but we were tired and desperate.
After touring a few other hotels, we told one of them (Hotel Amarillo, I think) that we were staying at Cocodrilo and the guy replied "well our hotel is probably cleaner" -- he said this totally unprompted which solidified in my mind that this was a consistent issue with the Cocodrilo and not just some fluke occurrence.
In conclusion, I feel ripped off by this place, I wish I had my $100 back, and hope this post will keep others from having the same crappy experience we did. Pretty much anywhere is better than this smelly, dirty, moldy, cob web infested place. They didn't even have a morning breakfast.
Clean, safe, & simple. Easy beach access. Really friendly owners. Would visit again.
I have never written a negative review on Google Review before and am not excited to do so now. But I had such a terrible experience with this hotel that I simply felt compelled to share my experience and also wanted to make sure other people were warned about this hotel's cancellation policy and complete disregard for helping customers in good faith.
Here's what happened. About two weeks ago, I was looking for a hotel in Tamarindo to stay for 5 days. For some reason, I ended up on Expedia.com and saw this hotel. I decided to book it.
I had my first week booked in a different hotel in Tamarindo (Hotel Arco Iris, which I can strongly recommend). Anyways, I had a friend visiting Colombia, and he reached out to see if I wanted to meet-up to spend some time together. All I needed to do was cancel this hotel.
As anyone who travels knows, the hotel industry largely works with a generous cancellation policy. So, suffice it to say, I expected no problems with this. Boy Was I Wrong.
The first thing I did was call Expedia. Figured it would be a 5 minute call. The phone rep goes off-line for about 5 minutes, gets back on and says, "Hi Mr. Nantz, I understand you want to cancel. Unfortunately, this hotel has a no cancellation policy. I apologize." I was like, "Really? I've never heard of a hotel that offers no cancellation with this much notice. Are you sure?" She said, "Yes, most hotels do offer cancellation but this hotel unfortunately does not" I was like, "Wow, you have got to be kidding me".
I was like wow. The manager then said he would call the hotel back on Friday and see if she could speak with the managers.
About 24 hours later, I get a call: "Hi Mr. Nantz, we called the hotel and the owners were still not available. The front desk said they would not be back until Monday".
I was like, "What! Now the owners are gone for three days. This is ridiculous."
So I get a taxi and drive over. I get to the front desk and explain the situation, and she immediately starts telling me exactly what the Expedia people said. "I'm sorry, I cannot offer cancellation refunds, only the owners can." I responded, "But the owners are not back until Monday, when my reservation starts. We need to figure this out." She refused, "No, I cannot help you." At this point, the whole situation was so ridiculous I did not even know what to do. It's completely absurd that a hotel would leave a front desk staff "in charge" who has no authority to help or even negotiate with a customer. I told that to her and she said, "All I can do is give keys to guest and help guests. I cannot help with cancellations".
That's when I really hit the floor. "Not really, they very rarely give cancellations." I asked, "Even with 4 days notice?". "No, the hotel policy is no cancellations and that's the policy they follow. You should have read the hotel policy when you made your reservation."
Wow, I was shocked she actually said that to me. As if the hotel's 'policy' had been clearly available to read on expedia.com.
Of course, the low point was what she said next. I asked, "Ok, do they Ever offer cancellations". The woman literally said this to me: "Yes, they have before. A few months ago, someone had to get medivaced out by helicopter to San Jose after a serious surfing accident. They did offer her a refund when her family reached out for a cancellation".
All by way of saying, this was without question the Worst hotel reservation experienced I have ever had in my life. I travel most weeks and have for years and have probably stayed in over 200 hotels and cancel all the time. Yet nothing I have ever experienced comes even close to my experience with this hotel.
I would strongly recommend NOT booking this hotel unless you are 100% sure you will be able to make your reservation. And even then, I would strongly recommend not staying here given how absolutely terrible the customer service was during this whole ordeal. Customer first? Not at Hotel Cocodrilo, when the hotel and its staff comes first.
Friendly staff, quiet, relaxed, non-commercial hotel a bit far from the center of the action.
Very nice hotel, room was big and clean with nice amenities. The staff was pleasant and helpful and the immediate beach access was so nice. Having a top notch French bakery downstairs on the grounds doesn't hurt! If you're going to Tamarindo Beach, this is where you want to stay.
I had a wonderful time. Spotless room with a view of the ocean, a big comfy bed, hot water, television, a/c, reliable wifi.
The ladies that run the hotel, Sandy and Trish, are amazing. Very warm and helpful.
And the adjoining restaurant and French bakery serve the best food I've had in Costa Rica. Prepared with love. I highly recommend the corvina (sea bass).
This is THE spot to stay at in Tamarindo. It's worth double what they charge per night.
Don't know about the hotel but the French bakery is amazing. Owners are French. Never been disappointed here :)
