Total Scam. Same as Hertz Rio Segundo. Not real Hertz!

Nightmare doesn’t begin to describe it. After being asked for $500 after being quoted $75 we were not able to rent a car as that would have taken any money we had to spend. They are con men. They take you from the airport to an outside location, making it impossible to do anything but get the car.

My wife was quoted $79.38 for her rental, and ended up paying $519.65 due to a "mandatory" insurance surcharge.

During her trip she had a very minor accident (bumped someone else's motorcycle and tipped it over). To actually use insurance you have to wait for traffic police to come make a report. After waiting two hours, she ended up just paying the other party $240 for the damage. So the extra insurance wasn't even helpful!

It would take far too long to describe the nightmare of dealing with Hertz in San Jose. My husband and I have traveled all around the world, renting cars in dozen of countries (including South Africa, Israel, etc.) and we have never experienced anything like this. We were quoted a price of $225 for a two week rental from Hertz. We knew that, in Costa Rica, you have to purchase liability insurance. We were told it would be less than $100. When we were driven to the facility (which is a franchise and is NOT at the airport) we were told that the insurance would be $1100. They refused to accept our AMEX premium auto insurance. (We have never had a car rental company turn it down). After over an hour of arguing back and forth--realizing we would be arriving at our rental house after dark--the clerk sullenly told us that we could set aside $7000 on our credit card for damages and we could take out the liability which would be $375. Reluctantly and under protest we agreed assuming that Hertz would straighten it out. (Turns out they added two items we didn't see in our hurry to leave.). Hertz has refused to do anything, insisting that they are not responsible and I should take it up with the franchise manager. Lots of luck with that. We have chalked it up to an expensive lesson in NEVER renting from Hertz and, in the future, demanding in writing the full cost. My husband has also filed a complaint with the FTC, but the best way to deal with this is for people to refuse to deal with them.

The prices for the car per day are deceivingly cheap, what they don't tell you is you have to pay mandatory insurance which is about $300-$500 dollars. We booked on Expedia and they said that they don't even that type of car. The first car we got ended up having axle issues and they almost didn't replace it because we drove it for an hour, had to pull off the road and use a local telephone to call and wait for a new car. They should just be upfront about the cost versus making people angry and frustrated when you get there thinking you've already paid only to find out its so much more expensive.

A barely OK experience. The car they gave us was of a lower class, but we only realized later because we picked up the car late at night. They asked us for a lot of paperwork, multiple times the same. They asked us to leave signed blank credit card slips, on top of normal credit card receipts, without prior notice or explanation. We had to sign credit card tickets again when returning the car.
We had a tire to change, and they tried to have us pay $200 for a new replacement tire, even though the tire it was replacing was old already, and costs $90 new in the US. We negotiated but could only manage to have them charge us $95, before we ran out of patience and decided to go on with our vacation. They ended up giving a knock-off tire that probably does not cost more than $60. Felt ripped off.

Large extra required insurance fee that wasn't mentioned ahead of time. Did not answer phone on there 24 hour emergency line. Would not give discount when we returned car a day early. Gave us a smaller SUV than we reserved. Not a good experience.

Firefly shares an office with Hertz. Rented a 4x4 from Firefly.
    1. Arrived at the Hertz location after 2 flights and 1 hour in immigration around 2:30pm. We were told the Firefly representative is "on break" and would be there soon. We had a reservation for 3pm, and another for 4pm (we were being doubly-prepared). At 3pm, the Hertz people say they **can't help us** because it is a separate company and that the Firefly rep will be back by 4pm, because that's when our reservation was for.Around 4:30 (TWO HOURS AFTER WE ARRIVE!), the Firefly rep arrives by taxi. We do paperwork, somehow there is no car available with Firefly, so he "transfers" us to the Hertz desk, so the men that said they couldn't help us with Firefly are now completing our paperwork (!!??), and we finally leave SJO by 5pm. RIDICULOUS and what a crappy way this was to start our Costa Rica vacation! We thought about leaving and renting from another company but were assured he was "on his way." We will never rent from Firefly or Hertz here again.
    2. Final cost for 8 days was $450 with only the mandated TPI for the Diahatsu Terios. Initial cost we were quoted by Orbitz was $210, which means mandatory fees increased it by $240. This should be more transparent when booking.
