Horrible, deceptive company (also known as NU). Their business is selling bogus insurance over and above the minimum required (you can use your credit card's CDW with a letter, and buy the minimum LDW from the government). Costa Rica needs to crack down on these charlatans, as these companies give a horrible first impression to anyone entering the country (there were numerous customers IN TEARS, at the desk, when we arrived). These are probably not the WORST rental company, but pretty damn close. We ending up paying OVER DOUBLE the negotiated rate with EXPEDIA. And when we brought back their terribly maintained SUV with a steering wobble, dents all over, with a bit of sand that we contributed on the center console they threatened to charge us $250, for cleaning. Needless to say this did not go over well. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH PEOPLE. RESEARCH CAR RENTALS, CAREFULLY, BEFORE YOU GO TO COSTA RICA.
We arrived early in the morning and had a 12 passenger van reserved. To our surprise they started offering us other options to save money. We kindly declined and requested we receive the van they requested. Low and behold, they told us they didn't have the van ready. They told us the night before the previous customer ruined the brakes. I wish they could have told us this as soon as they found out or from the moment they saw me. But instead tried to offer us something else. I was on the phone for 3 hours trying to find a van. Finally we were able to find one at triple the cost. I had no option since I had my parents and my 15 month old daughter. I would do my research and confirm they have the vehicle before arriving.
Manual shift but nice staff. Off airport location near Denny's
Don't be fooled by the low rates. Despite having coverage via my credit card, these guys wanted to charge me five times more than my rental fee in insurance and when I insisted about my credit card coverage, they insisted they needed to put a $5000 hold on my card. Went back to the airport and rented from a reasonable company.
We showed up and they didn't have the SUV we booked. The guy keep going on about how he was our "amigo" and then made us bribe him another 100$ cash on top of charging us more for a bigger SUV we didn't even want. The thing was bone dry and they told us to head straight to a gas station. I'd give them a ZERO if i could. SCAMMERS!
Didn't have the car type I requested, charged extra for the insurance I already purchased in advance, and have me the tiny car with empty gas tank (gas light on, below "e"). Normally, no problem. But I had never been to Costa Rica before, was driving by myself, so had zero idea where to go get gas. Terrible experience. The people were friendly though, so there's that.
Emailed and called twice to make sure someone would be at the counter when we dropped off at 4 am and nobody was there. Thank god for Economy car rental who was nice enough to drive us to the airport.
This family owned, Costa Rican rental agency cheats, lies, distorts prices and attempts to rip off consumers. Upon comparing my experience with other tourists who were returning cars, I learned that my experience constitutes standard practice. The young staff employed behind the counter are pressured and trained to rob tourists.
Solid car rental tried to extract $1000 dollars for a $350 rental (It was originally reserved at an advertised price of $50).
I returned my car at 5:30 am, just before an International return flight. This marked me as a prime candidate for a scam. I presented my written contract with a promise of the net total price. But, the agent launched into a rehersed act about not finding it in the computer. He refused to call the owner who had issued me a very clear promise on the phone, in the email, and the printed contract document.
I pulled my bags and those of my entire group off of the airport shuttle bus and told him that I was contacting a local lawyer. He tried to frighten me with the fact that I had already signed a boilerplate power-of-attorney to their own choice of a local lawyer. When I explained to him that my company retains the services of a law firm in Costa Rica, he jumped in the airport van and left without me. When he returned (and after consulting with his owner) he ruefully admitted that he had overlooked my contract and the owners commitment. He adjusted the price and drove our group airport. This was confirmed to me by the other passengers in the airport van.
Don't buy that guff about a government requirement to purchase insurance from a monopoly consortium. While true, other agencies advertise honest prices and quote total cost. I plan to write a full review in my blog and a few print publications.
This car rental agency has scam written all over it!
Never rent here I promise this place will rip you off!!!! Charged me for 1 day extra and flat out said he does not care. Good thing I charged this to my Amex!
Also I purchased the insurance online as well and they did not honor it.
Never never rent here. I have rented from Budget and Hertz in CR with no problem. You have been warned!
If you are visiting Costa Rica and need to rent a car, please do yourself a favor and stay away from Solid card rental. You will potentially save yourself stress and anxiety when that should be exactly what you are avoiding. This was my 5th trip to Costa Rica and this was by far my worst experience ever with a car rental agency. Outside of everything I list below, the agent who assisted us had the most demeaning, condescending attitude.
I'll start with the only positive experience I had with Solid: the person who picked us up from the airport was great. He was on time, very nice and helpful. However, once we arrived to the agency it quickly went downhill.
First, the car we rented was unavailable for mechanical issues on the car. No worries, this can happen. Typically an agency would help you out in this situation not at Solid. They first presented us with two options: (1) take a 2 wheel drive manual sedan at the same price as the car we rented - we rented a 4 wheel drive automatic SUV which cost more and we needed 4 wheel drive for the places we were visiting - or (2) drive ourselves 5 hours to another agency of theirs, for which they would not pay for the gas or compensate us in any way. They assured us we did not need an SUV or 4 wheel drive, which we learned along our drive that they were very wrong.
Next, came the insurance. I had already communicated via email with someone within the agency who confirmed my credit card covered CDW. I even had a letter from my credit card company to confirm this as well as a print out of the email communication with the employee within Solid, but this wasn't good enough for the agent. We had to go through the hassle of getting the credit card company on the phone to confirm the insurance. Once doing so, I confirmed that I didn't want the CDW, but he went ahead and charged us for CDW anyways. After reviewing my receipts, I questioned the insurance they charged us for and he confirmed that they charged us for CDW because I "asked for it" and described any mis-communication regarding this as "your fault" over and over again. After agreeing to refund me for the CDW insurance, he indicated the deposit would be larger - $3000 as compared to $1200 - so they would have to charge me the difference. This was not an issue for me. However, instead of charging me $1800, they charged an additional $2000. I questioned him about the total deposit, but he continued to state "it's only $3000." I literally had to have him take out a calculator and add the two amounts on the receipts together ($1200 and $2000), after which he just stared at me and said "the deposit is only $3000."
Next came the final payment, for which they were trying to overcharge me. My reservation included GPS. However, they never provided me one because the agent said I never reserved one. Luckily I had a printout of the reservation, which clearly included a charge for GPS. After pointing this out, he said "oh well we don't have any for you, very busy right now." I then asked why I was paying the same total amount as my reservation since I was not getting a GPS, and he said because the reservation did not include the SLS insurance. I then had to point out the charge for SLS insurance on the reservation, after which he just said "oh well you can figure that out when you return the car."
After this, we walked down to a neighboring car rental agency to inquire about their availability. When in line, the person in front of me overheard me say something about Solid and she turned around and said "Join the club." According to her, she had a reservation, but they gave her car away to someone else and told her "there's other car rental agencies out there, good luck." Even the agent who assisted me at this new car rental agency indicated that there's been a lot of issues with SOLID recently. Luckily they were able to assist us and provide the car we needed and were much, much better to work with.
Sorry for the long winded review, but this was a horrible experience and I strongly urge you to stay away from Solid car rental.
Several complaints about this company. If you order a car online, it will not be the same price once you get here, guaranteed. Mine was nearly triple the price seen online. There was another guy there while I was there that had the same problem. They will not honor other insurance plans, you have to buy the local one (although this may be standard in Costa Rica). The person that was helping me treated me well, but the person that was helping the other guy was somewhat disrespectful. They don't seem to have much selection either. Also you have to put a deposit on your credit card. You will get your money back (as long as you don't break anything) but, without a credit card you can't get a car. It can't be a debit card. I'd probably give 1 star, but they offered a shuttle to and from the airport for free which was very convenient.
Fast and easy.
These are the good guys, but you should be prepared:
I rented one of their larger SUVs for 5 days early June 2017. Summary:
- prompt at picking me up from SJO
- no hassle car rental process (though, read below)
- car in great/perfect condition although not your typical "less than 1000 mile" as you may be used with the largest US car rental companies
- no upsell pressure, in fact I was willing to pay a little extra to get *the* largest SUV but they were skittish about it and we stayed with the reserved SUV
- no surprise charges: I was charged for what I reserved - the car, mandatory insurance (which is explicitly not covered by CDW on my card at least), and a GPS (I loved having the GPS, never rented one in the US as I'm confident in the phone coverage)
- no hassle return, dropped me off at SJO
Caveats:
- their online reservation system is not well integrated to agent computers. As a result, the agents can't locate your online reservations by reference number. they will find you by name/date.
- you will need a letter from your credit card that says you're eligible for the CDW. I called Capital One while in the states and customer service was baffled by this. I had to insist, finally she pulled a representative from the insurance company that backs the program (in this case, Chubb insurance), and they promptly sent me an email with the "attestation". I also had a printed copy of the CDW description on the Capital One site.
- you will need a credit card that has embossed numbers so they leave an impression. Solid has a modern/ online card device and they will use that to charge you at the end of the trip. But they need the embossed numbers so they can take an impression of your card at time of rental and have you sign 2 blank slips (I assume they'd be filling them out later if you run away or ruin the car). I got my slips back upon return. I assume if you don't do this, you won't leave with the car.
- the car inspection upon return was much more thorough than the typical practice in the US. Make sure to note any dents you see when you pick up the car. He spent quite a bit of time examining the windshield, which was a bit scary because it had not crossed my mind to do so when I picked up.
- oh, and they didn't want to give me their absolute largest SUV because it was deemed luxury and I had declined CDW. I didn't care, less money on rental and less money on gas, but in case it makes a difference to you.
Overall I had a good experience with them and I would rent there again.
Pricing is very different from what advertised on travel sites like Expedia
We rented a full-size 4 x 4 SUV from Solid Car from this location. Our experience was very smooth right from renting the car online to returning it. Kathia was very courteous in responding to my emails and on-line chats to confirm our reservation multiple times. They have a booth at the airport and the person there (I think his name was Javier but I am not sure) was very helpful and took us to the shuttle stop where another fellow (forget his name) waited with us for the Solid shuttle and took us to the rental office. We got full coverage (highly recommended) and were on our way. We were told that there were no hidden charges and there were none.
I will most absolutely rent from Solid again!

Real bad experience Don't due what they promised
I will always rent from Solid Car Rental when i visit Costa Rica. Great Service, great prices, and the owners of the rent a car were very good with us recommending us things and giving us tips.
I will recommend solid car rent a car for any person who wants to have a great and remarkable experience at Costa Rica.
Thank You Solid Car Rental, and Pura Vida!
We rented from Solid for a period of 9 months in 2014-2015. We got a great price and great service. We were able to upgrade to a bigger car whenever family came to visit. The cars were always clean and we did not have a single mechanical breakdown despite the fact that we were driving close to 100km everyday. Next time in Costa Rica, we will rent again from Solid.
