I just had a similar experience to others. undisclosed charges to my credit card, agency 15 minutes away from the airport. incredibly slow service at the counter. your rental will end up costing you double whatever price is quoted to you when you book which you won't find out about until you are returning the car and are in a rush to get to your flight home.

Terrible experience. Would never rent from Avis in Costa Rica again. I probably will never rent from Avis in general again because I had such a bad experience. Waited for hours to get a car and felt cheated and taken advantage of.

Beware of this car rental service. First of all, it is NOT located at the airport. It’s about 10 minutes from the airport which turns into 15 or 20 minutes when the traffic is heavy in San Jose. I made a reservation online which should’ve costed around $475 (so I thought) for the 6 days we were there according to the website. HOWEVER, they don’t tell you on the website that you HAVE to purchase full coverage AND they charge a $1,000 deposit when you pick up the car. So instead of it costing $475, it was going to cost around $1200 PLUS the $1,000 deposit. Absolutely ridiculous. We went BACK to the airport and rented a new, 4x4 suv from dollar rental for $700 plus the $1,000 refundable deposit. Now had we been like most tourist where we just agree and nod, we would’ve paid double for a rental car! So glad we went with dollar rental. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT recommend the Avis car rental in San Jose to ANYONE.

    Great service - excellent value.
No - they are not at the airport but a 10 min shuttle ride away. But I believe that's the same with any of the SJO rental companies. we had booked a Nissan X-trail via British Airways and got a very good deal. I was surprised to find that this included full excess cover too - and the only extra offered to me was tyre and windscreen excess, which I declined. No hard sell at all. The car was spotlessly clean with only 20000km on the clock and was exactly the model we had ordered. The rental staff were smiling, polite and efficient, both at pick-up and at drop off.
Only slight snag was a 15 min wait for the pick-up at the airport, but we were met immediately by an Avis representative who explained that the delay was due to heavy traffic. And boy it was! It took us nearly 2 hours to get out of San Jose to get heading to the east coast. One could argue that Avis might have taken traffic into account at the pick-up, but overall I was very happy with the service.

I rented a car from Avis for my recent trip to Costa Rica. As others have stated, this Avis is not at the airport, however, they provide a free shuttle which takes lots of time to discover (no signage at the airport). Upon arrival, I presented my reservation and the representative told me I need to pay for the $18/day insurance EVEN IF my credit card has coverage. I told him I would refuse it, but he said I couldn't take the car without paying for it. If I had an issue, he said I would have to rent a car elsewhere. I sucked it up and rented the car and will be calling Avis corporate instead. Besides all of this, upon checkout, the representative recommended a hotel nearby called La Riviera. He brought me behind his desk and showed me a price for $65 + tax. The AVIS shuttle took me to the hotel, only for the hotel to try to charge me $105 even. The hotel then called AVIS and the SAME REP from AVIS told me it was $105 just like he showed me. I guess they thought I didn't understand the difference between $65 and $105 in Spanish (which sound somewhat similar), but I will be reporting this office to AVIS for their illegal racket of hotel scams. Please DO NOT use this AVIS even if they seem friendly. You can rent a car comfortably directly at the airport for about half the price.

    Horrible experience with Avis :
I rented a car by Internet just for one day, we go to the airport to take the car and :
1st disappointment : it's not in the airport and it's not mention anywhere

2nd disappointment : we had difficulties to find the guy for the shuttle, we ask to the another company, and we finally find him far from the entry, calling someone

3rd : he said the shuttle come in 20min, after 30min nothing we go to ask him, he said "strange I will call", and finally the shuttle "forget us" (his own words) and "he will arrive in 30min". It was 8PM, we was tired by the flight, it was very cold and windy, and we had wait during 60min just for the shuttle.
The shuttle drive very badly and very fast, no excuse.

4th : we arrived at the car pick-up, the only good surprise : they surclass us because we wait at the airport, ok.
But I book the car on Internet for 36 dollars, and finally I must paid 63$. I ask explications, "it's because in Costa Rica it's special and your Visa Gold or MasterCard Golg don't cover the insurance , it's written in the general conditions on Internet". I was very surprised, I travel a lot since 16 years and it's the first time I see that. I said to him I'm not agree, i booked it few hours before and it was writing it's 36$, I was waiting a long time in the airport, and normallly my Gold card cover this kind of insurance.
He just tear the reservation paper that I begin to fill, and he said ok, it's your choice, I will call the shuttle to take you back to the airport.

It was 9:30 PM, we were completely tired and we were in need of the car for the next day, impossible to find another car in the night, so we finally throw over and took the car.

It was the first time with Avis, and the last one. I'm feeling completely trick, all the behavior of the employees were ungracious.
I definitely not recommend AVIS for rent your car.

Make sure you know about the insurance coverage issues in Costa Rica. You must purchase liability insurance and bring proof of collision coverage if you have it. If you do this your rental experience will be fine. Avis was very good and car was excellent.

Nice people, shuttle driver was very fast and helped carry our luggage. The only bad thing is the $1500 hold they place on your credit card if you want to use your own credit card insurance. They also do try and push their insurance on you even though a lot of credit card companies cover 100%. Also be aware of the mandatory Costa Rica government insurance $50+ a day, but you will have to pay this at every rental car location.

This Avis is NOT located at the airport. I don't even think they have a service desk where all the rental car companies are located. We only found the shuttle because we were walking around lost outside the main exit of the airport looking for Avis. Once we got in the shuttle, the driver was nice enough and drove us about 2 miles to the Avis lot. The attendant there was informative and friendly and we had a nice, clean, newer vehicle. I definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle and one w/ a decent amount of HP if you are driving outside of San Jose. The main roads were well paved but it's very hilly and we saw a lot of older vehicles and trucks overheating on the side of the road.

We were totally impressed with the vehicles and the service from Avis in San Jose. We were travelling with a family of 9, so were a bit nervous, but we had no issues at all. Mauricio provided us with a quote online and it was not a penny more. We were picked up at the airport as scheduled, our vehicles (two 4-wheel drives) were near new, in great order with excellent rubber which is important on Costa Rican roads. We have read a number of online reviews and were ready for anything with Costa Rican rental cars, but the service, quality and efficiency that Avis and the team gave us was first class and the cars were the same. We have no hesitation at all in either using them again or recommending them.
