this is the worst place ever if you want to take a rental in costa rica! they wan't to sell you extra insurance at any cost. they wont give us the car without an extra insurance and they blackmailed us. leave this place by side if you are looking for a car in costa rica.

We rented a Toyota Yaris. The car had various small scratches that had properly been documented. The condition of the car was overall ok, the 140k kilometers made it feel a bit old but in general no problems.

They tried to sell us a road side assistance service which you only need if the malfunction of the car was caused by you.

The return of the car was no problem.

No issues. I would come again.

My portable Wi-Fi unit never worked, disappointingly no answer or call returned when I tried to contact the office regarding the issue. Despite being advertised as at the airport; they do not have a desk inside instead you search for a rep outside past the mob of taxi and shuttle drivers (found them in the restaurant patio seating area after much searching). I phoned europcar's help number to aid in finding representation and the struggle was real. After being on hold extensively, no aid was received by calling
Staff at the office were pleasant and professional. I found the car was exactly what I needed for my trip.
Check out/ return process was long due to the number of new rentals ahead of me. If you choose this company leave yourself plenty of time in case of crowds.

This place sucks. Have us a crappy car and forced us to buy insurance that was almost as much as the rental amount

The car was good but they make tricks to not to take the Credit Card car insurance. They only give you the chance to take theirs at a price

Similar to other negative reviews. At the start of rental they tried to sell insurance, we had the appropriate letter from credit card insurance, so they then said we need to pay (pay, not pre-auth) $7000 for security. We declined, and paid for their insurance. On return they tried to charge us for damages, which was just plastic / dirt scraped on bumber. I covered myself by taking a video of me cleaning it off. At this point they become very aggressive, and still wanted to charge me, saying "how do we know if maybe you've hit or killed someone", and "we'll find you in Canada and take you to court" etc. There was also a German group checking out who they tried to charge money for traffic tickets "just in case", but they had a Costa Rican with them who argued on their behalf, which ended up as a brawl in the parking lot with the security guard (yes I'm serious). Very scary stuff. Stay away. You have been warned.

Most horrible experience ever and we’ve rented cars in many countries. Expect to be ripped off and dealt with in nastiest way when you complain about price gouging. Worst thing is we prepaid through Expedia with our plane tickets. Europcar met us at airport, drove us to their site which is several miles away, then left us with 2 children on sidewalk in front of their business when we refused to pay hundreds of extra dollars. Without phone service it took hours to get back to airport using taxi. DO NOT USE EUROPCAR! Wish I could give it a zero.

To avoid this station altogether ! We got a car in a less car category with no automatic gearbox as booked. The alternative was no car at all. The desk lady was very impolite. My wife is normally very calm, but was at the brink of starting a serious argument. The car itself was very bad and the clutch and gearbox were end of life, so the car stalled regularly and we know how to handle a manual gearbox. Moreover they scare you to buy additional Road Side Assistance assurance or face a fine of up to USD 3,000 when the car brakes down in more remote areas of Costa Rica. We rent cars all over the world and this was a REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE.

Good service, a bit slow, the csr we got was older than advertised and very basic but it worked well and in the end we were happy with it.

RENTER BEWARE. I went from thinking I'd spend a minimal amount on my rental car to dropping several hundred dollars for a few days rental. To begin with, I was forced to purchase insurance through Europcar even though I am insured through Visa. They will make you pay for insurance unless you have a letter from your credit card company ON COMPANY LETTERHEAD stating you're insured. Knowing Europcar, they'll probably also require that it's an original, signed, notarized/apostilled copy. Ridiculous. The car I rented was beat up and smelled terrible but it worked fine for the few days I needed it for. I went over the car with the rental worker and she noted the hundreds of scratches, dings, holes
(yes, holes), and rusty spots on the car. I took photos of every part of the car before leaving the lot. When I returned with the car two days later, I was told there was a new scratch on the back of the car that would run me $150. I contested it since I had a photo of the same scratch from the day I picked up the car. The girl working the counter was extremely rude and wouldn't budge. She said it was a different scratch altogether. I asked to speak with a supervisor and was denied. I was too tired from my trip so I ended up paying the money and leaving. Europcar looks for any way possible to get more money from you. I've since taken my business to more legitimate car rental companies and there's much less scamming. RENT ELSEWHERE.

The worst rental cars ever. They cheat you with the insurance. When you go get the car, they only give you two options of insurance. Both expensive. But the less expensive, you can even considered an insurance. So you must do the most expensive insurance. If you read the comments before make deal with them, you should rethink about make a deal with europcar.

They are thieves, they will not tell you when you pickup your car, and when the car returns you will withdraw fee for roadside assistance from the card. You can not do anything against it, the card already has been recorded since the car was pickup and no one ever has a problem with you and they will pull off.

The rental place is an average one, they are pushing with additional insurance, even though you are fully insured. After returning the car they told us to wait and the driver could give us a lift to the hotel (3 km away) but after 30 minutes of waiting they informed that they could call us a taxi
    on plus they have WiFi.

They said, that the car was fully paid (via another agency: sunny cars) and charged 1,99$/day anyway AFTERWARDS for an not needed additional insurance. Of course it was mentioned in the contract, but isn't strange to charge something I have to pay afterwards 🤔? I'm pretty sure they are trained to grab this additional money.

The car was "OK" even though it had the worst condition of all rental cars I ever rented.

Actually, we had a very good experience here. It wasn't perfect but it was good. The pick-up at the airport was quick and our SUV was waiting for us when we arrived. The office is just a few minutes from the airport. The SUV (Toyota Rav 4) had a lot of miles on it and lots of body dents but it ran really well. It wasn't cheap though but all rentals in Costa Rica are expensive. The young man who serviced us was very nice and spoke fluent English. We did buy lost key insurance at $1.99 per day and we did rent a GPS which worked great (we strongly advise you get one). The only things I didn't particularly like is that I was told there are no gas stations nearby when he tried to sell us a gas refill at $90 (we refused it). We found 2 Delta gas stations close to the rental office in Alajuela when returning the rental and we refilled there. Also, the settled up charges were quoted to us in dollars(as they were when we rented the vehicle), but the agent charged my credit card in the local currency. I used his calculator to determine it was a bad exchange rate. This is a sneaky trick I've run into before. I had the charge cancelled and then paid cash in dollars. If not for these two things, I would have rated my experience here 5 stars.
