We booked a car many weeks in advance. Economy said they would pick us up at the Marriott about 10 minutes away. Once we arrived they told us they would not pick us up. Finally after much back and forth we got Economy to pic us up. We got a flat tire. We put the worn out spare on and returned the car to Economy and told them about the flat. A rude counter person told me I would have to pay for the tire. A charge of $317.02 was placed on my Visa card. I have strated a claim process with Visa as I have insurance. I have asked Economy for the past month over several emails for a simple invoice for the tire. They have acknowledge my request but after many many emails they can't seem to get it together to provide me with a simple invoice. Apparently my request has been escalated to the general manager. Still no invoice.
In short I would not deal with Economy rental. Avery difficult and unkind company!!!

Are you an educated woman? Not here you're not. Women are second class citizens. The guy wouldn't allow me to speak without responding to me without responding tot my husband. It will take you HOURS to check in. Also, take pictures of everything you sign as the docs are most definitely contradictory (especially if you purchase insurance) and they will not allow you to amend any documents. When we inquired, we were told "it's a mistake in the English". Nope. Same in Spanish. Although we are American, we speak Spanish and can definitely understand when we are being cursed at or ridiculed in Spanish. This was a horrible experience and if it wasn't nearly midnight after a day of traveling, I probably would have been smart enough to take my business elsewhere. Definitely a predatory company.

I was happy when I got an affordable mini car online from here, then got there and they wanted a $2500 deposit! Plus insurance, which I thought I took care of on the site, but apparently it was 3rd party insurance that they don't honor. I would have given them a 1 star if not for the employee that was very helpful. So much so, he recommended another company that was more affordable for a better vehicle. Then called that company to have a shuttle bring us there. I can't neglect to mention and consider that kind of service. So that's why I'd say 3 stars.

Know that the price quoted online is only what you pay if you have insurance that covers you. Since we rented a passenger van, our credit card insurance didn't cover it and our rental ended up being four times as expensive.

I will say the staff was very nice and understanding!

Everything is fine . but only $ 60 per day for the cheapest! insurance is certainly too expensive. But when you do not have an outlet and you are facing a fact or buy or not get a car. It is unpleasant.

When booking through expedia or others, there are surprise fees at the check in. Do not want to recognize the insurance purchased in expedia as they say thay it is useless. Car was in good shape.

Don't rent from this company !!!! The worst Car Rental Ever !!!!! we hired a couple of times with this company in CostaRica, long time rent, short time rent and its the worst experience we ever had renting a car, we are used to travel and rent cars in different continents. what ever you reserve on the end you will always a different price as you reservetion has confirmed. Time after time big lies !!!!! this was the last time you will receive us as a customer !!!!!
And there is a other thing please treat your customers a customers !!! they are paying your salary !!!!

Total scam artist. The crazy charges for liability are somewhat common, but they try to cheat you when you return and find any tiny scratch to charge $100's of dollars. They changed us $180 saying we scratched under the passenger side bumper that was already there. I pointed this out before taking the car so make sure you check they mark all scratches. Better yet don't rent with these frauds.

We had a bad experience using Economy car rental in Costa Rica. First, they forced us to take an insurance with them even tough we had already one. Also, they charged us 800$ for a little scratch(5cm) on the bottom of the bumper.

We Do not recommend that company !

Very very friendly staff but be forewarned that you will be buying insurance, no exceptions. Even if you purchased before arrival, you will be required to carry local liability. Great car and friendly staff

I have rented dozens of cars and vans from Economy over the years. They are always very good to me and our most common agent, Eduardo Diaz, has taken great care of us and always come through. The cars have been clean and have had no mechanical issues. Once a gas station clerk in Puntarenes accidentally put Regular gas into a Diesel rental truck. I called Eduardo and they had a new truck there within 2 hours and stayed with the old truck while we drove away. Then they even offered a discount for the trouble that was obviously not their fault. Thanks for all the help over the years, I would never rent from anyone else.

Horrible! DO NOT RENT FROM HERE!! All they do is steal your money. SCAM! My family has been renting here for a few years. Unfortunately our car had a minor dent this time. Something that can be easily fixed for less than 100 dollars. Well they took out $900 to hold from my mom's account and said the "guy" who usually inspects these things isnt in. Well he hasn't been in for a month or so because we call every day and still can't get a hold of him. They have stolen my mom's money and still haven't gotten back to us about a full report on the car. We told them we use them all the time but with this service or lack thereof we will be moving our business else where. They dont care about you. All they care about is making easy cash. If you get in an accident better because they'll try and squeeze you out of every penny. This place should be shut down. Never rent from here unless you want every penny beat out of you. HORRIBLE!

These guys are CRIMINALS. Like others have stated, these morons take massive deposits on your credit card should you waive the insurance, then either don't refund it, or take months to do it. We used a Visa/Debit where the deposit was CHARGED to the card (subsequently removed from our bank account) and 2 months later still have yet to see it sent back. No damage to car at all. NO REASON to hold the funds, as the rental was paid in full on return. AVOID this scam and rent somewhere else, or take a cab. You will save in the long run. Business practises like this would be illegal in any other country, but seeing as they deal with tourists typically trying to get from A to B or returning the car with a flight to catch, expect to get screwed over. If you do rent from these scam artists you are going to get EXACTLY what you paid for. Garbage, miled out vehicles and a level of service that would make the most bureaucratic, ass backward government agency laugh. AVOID!!!!!!

I called this particular branch in advance to ascertain expected costs and CDW coverage with my chase reserve card. Upon arrival, it quickly became clear that honest disclosure is not the name of the game. Following 20 minutes of aggressively trying to sell us additional insurance [raising daily costs to ~ $60/day] we declined and moved on to the challenge of using the Chase reserve for the $2500 hold on deposit as it doesn't have have raised numbers on it. Despite me offering numerous other cards they insisted on using the credit card for the deposit and charge it rather than hold the credit [as is custom]. While trying to convince them otherwise, another customer came in, complained on the same and in return had her car inspected with a microscope to reveal possible damage [none that we could see]. She did not receive her deposit back until formal inspection took place [she was really captive here as she had to fly to Canada].

In the end, and since other agencies had no cars left we did the deal and returned the car 14 days later, unscathed. We were promised refund for our $2500 within 2-5 business days [in their own words -- "we've been doing this for 30 years. This is how it works"]. Today, 2.5 weeks later. None arrived. I called the Economy rent a car office and they say they refunded it. Right. makes sense. I am now claiming the money through Chase. Took them 5 minutes to charge us for $2500 and yet it is so complicated to pay it back. They must be moving the money with a horse-drawn carriage.

Do not use their services and if you must, at least don't believe their sales pitch and minimize damages.

We have been renting from Economy (San Jose airport location) for years. The guys at Economy are great! Sometimes it can be a bit difficult renting a car in foreign countries but these guys make it as easy (as possible.for Costa Rica)
Cars are always ready and in great condition, usually new vehicles. AC always works which is super important here.
Only recommendation would be to clarify insurance costs prior to rental so your aren't surprised but insurance costs. In Costa Rica it is higher than in the US and Canada.

Be prepared to get mediocre service and to be ripped off. Booked our car and they didn't have our car available to pick up. The next stay they were slow in getting us our car. Although they reduced the charge for the rental, insurance is a rip off. Read carefully before you book. Expedia insurance and credit card insurance is not enough. They will put on another insurance cost. Don't be filled by the low cost per day for rental. Staff was better near the end, but really make it a horrible first experience.

i have been using Economy now for many years now and the experience I've encountered is amazing! Everyone is always eager to help. I don't understand how their can be such different experiences. I for one have had one of the main workers Esteban go out of his way to always have everything ready for me. So my experience is phenomenal !! When ever i am asked which car rental company to use in Costa Rica or Florida I will always recommend Economy.

Not sure if my first email went through, but just in case it didn't, let me reiterate. My experiences with Economy have always been excellent. The staff is always attentive and courteous, and the vehicles clean and well maintained.

Carlos Zuniga is always a pleasure to deal with. I always make my reservations through him. My reservations have always been right on, and he has helped me on a couple of occasions with very short notice. Carlos has also taken the time to help me with travel plans to various destinations in Costa Rica. His knowledge and recommendations are also great.

Please pass on to your staff that they do an excellent job, especially in the high season when things can be a little crazy and stressful. It is definitely appreciated.

DO NOT RENT HERE!!! i quoted my rental online and called to confirm the price I got was correct with the correct insurance coverage and the price they gave me matched my online price so I reserved it. Upon arrival SOMEHOW one of the required insurances wasn't included and the price skyrocketed. The staff was BEYOND rude and not helpful in explaining anything. Also, we got a flat tire and the company forced us to pay full price to replace the tire, something entirely out of our control. As someone who works in the auto industry I know a tire does not cost anywhere near $250, this place is a rip off. And on top of it all the driver to the airport broke a piece off of my suitcase. BEWARE!!!!!!
