Got a good deal at this all inclusive resort and was pretty happy with it. A little ghetto and run down but worth the price. If your closer to the pool and beach you may find partying teenagers keep you awake all night. A little far from everything is a drawback buy it's relatively close to mt Arenal and the Nicaraguan border and those are both worthwhile side trips. The beach itself in not that interesting but if you want to just relax and decompress, it's a leading location. Food was ok, entertainment was pretty blah. Whatever you do , DO NOT EAT AT THE AIRPORT! INFLATED PRICES, EXTREME TOURIST TRAP!!! It's seriously 25$ for one slice of pizza and 7 dollars for a Pepsi.consider yourself warned!!!

I am from San Jose, married two kids.
We decided to do a vacation trip, so, we saw this hotel as a good opportunity despite the review on 3.4.
We also took advantage of the all-included that also includes transportation.
Transportation: You need to call in advance if you want to have use the transportation.
The transportation is an agreement between the hotel and the transporter company, which is very good.
The buses are big and comfortable, you can do the #1, not #2.
They have also for some circumstances, microbuses too.
I guess, the agreement is about transportation.
They pick you up from a specific place in San Jose.
The hotel do not give you a seat, just a space, so, you need on time or before (15 min).
You may need to ask the driver if you are in his list or not, otherwise, you have to ask the next one, and so on.
At this point, we all four had a space in one of the buses. (Good deal).
During the trip, the driver does a pause in a restaurant (20-25 min) where you can breakfast, lunch or dinner, do #1, or#2, etc. depending of the hours of the trip, after 1.5-to 2 hrs. Of the trip.
The trip by bus takes between 3.5 to 4.5 hrs.
Check in: Once you arrive to the hotel, one of their personal of reception give you the welcome on the bus and also explains the check in process.
In my case, I paid in advance the two nights, so, my line was shorter and faster. (Good deal, again).
Shuttle: Something that we notice is the utilization of the internal shuttle microbus, which pass for all the circuit every 5 minutes.
Of course if the shuttle is full, you may need the next one or, you can walk. Any way the rooms are pretty close.
Information: They also give you a brochure the location of the restaurants, Mexican, Italian and the buffet. The buffet is close to the pool and the bar.
Food: You can drink and eat, all what you want, you just need to check the schedule, for the buffet.
For the Mexican and Italian, you need to reserve on reception with anticipation, in my case, we did not use it, my family and I were happy with the buffet.
Important, the hotel is part of a hill, anyway, I saw people with wheel chair, people with disabilities, kids, babies and old people.
I thought the pool could be small according with the pictures from the web, but, it was big enough. It is not deep, we can feel secure with the kids. The deepest areas has around of 1.5 meters.
Anyway the kids were always under supervision by us all the time.
The sea: The sea is close to the pool, bar and buffet, maybe 100 meters.
The waters of the gulf are calm and crystalline.
The sea is not deep, there are not waves at all, maybe just one very little.
There are chairs around the pool and the sea, we always found 1, 2 or more available.
Animals: you can see some small monkeys (White-headed capuchin), raccoons and coatis. I mean no more than two.
We are not allowed to feed them, of course and the beach is blue flag.
Smoke: The only place to smoke is the beach, there is a fine for trying to smoke in the room or public areas.
Rooms: I was in building #1, and the building closer to the pool are #10 and #11. I guess by been closer, you will be also closer to the noise of the buffet, bar and theater for the night activities.
Parking: I know there is parking, we did not use it. The parking are not close to the rooms, you may need to use the Shuttle or walk.
Summary: We passed a very good time in family these weekend. My kids loved the sea and the pool. My wife love the fact that the sea is calm and crystalline. We loved the buffet.
We know there are some other areas, but, for the time than we had per day, between the pool, sea, meals and we barely had had time to rest.
The personal of the hotel are always willing to help, respectful, gentle and kind.
Bad: maybe the fact that the hotel is part of a hill and you have to use the shuttle; the shuttle is always available when you need it, 99.9% of the time, you don’t have to call it, it is always moving around; but, why to call it, when you can walk.

All-you-can-eat-drink.. best for a weekend or a 2 to 3 day escape.. friendly helpful dedicated professional staff.. beautiful view from main hotel lobby and rooms that are facing the Gulf of Papagayo.. lovely pools and sunbathing.. Again unlimited food & drinks makes up for the price.. real value.

Took half hour to find our reservation. Moved to three rooms to get what we wanted. First room had no lock on balcony door. Second room had huge disinfectant smell, no hangers or closets and a steep walk up hill to our room. Toilet in third room could only be used by pulling chain inside commode. Bed had broken bed boards and lack of wash cloths and towels. Lighting was shut off around the entire premise between mid night and 6: am. Food was recycled from breakfast to lunch to dinner. Vodka taste liked rubbing alcohol and rum in the mixed drinks was miniscule. Nothing to do here unless you sign up for a tour. All of the help was thoughtful and pleasant.

My boyfriend and I (age 20 & 24) visited Costa Rica for the first time and stayed at the Occidental Allegro Papagayo from May 18-June 1. This is a great resort with lots of activities and friendly staff who ensure that you have an amazing trip from the day that you arrive until the day that you leave. The resort is built on a very steep hill, but rest assured, if you are unable/unwilling to walk around the resort, there is a shuttle bus service that runs from 7am-11pm. The food at the resort is also very good, with plenty of variety. We went on a total of 4 day tours which we booked from a guide in the lobby building. All of the tours are worth the money, trust me!
Our room was a typical hotel room with a bathroom (stand up shower), television and a patio. Room service tended to our room everyday around noon and did an excellent job. The entertainment staff put on a dancing show every night, with the exception of karaoke one evening per week. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to learn your name and spend time with you. Previous reviews stated that the alcoholic drinks were far too weak and contained very little alcohol. This is not true, and a few times we had to ask for less alcohol to be put into our drinks.
If you choose to visit the Allegro Papagayo you will most definitely not be disappointed!response / report this review -

First of all, we got to the hotel early and they charged us $45 to eat and use the pool until we could check in at 3pm, we went to the beach because on their site we saw that it had white sand beaches but in reality it was black sand, the lunch was ok. Then came the time to check in, the rooms were not even ready, we waited for hours, the service sucked. It's better to spend extra money and go to the Hilton, it's so much worth it. I wish I could give this hotel 0 stars.
