This place was fantastic. Maureen and John run a top notch operation here, and it is extremely impressive how nice the place is considering how remote it is. Please keep in mind that it is quite remote, and it takes about 20 minutes of driving on some very rough roads to get there from the main road, and another 30 minutes to get to the coast/sizable town of Dominical. There are small stores and very small towns about 25 minutes from the property, but the bottom line is that you are fairly remote, and if that is what you want, then this place is the oasis you are looking for.
First off, the views are awesome all the way around. You are high up in the jungle and look down through the valley and can see the ocean in the faint distance on a clear day. The weather was very interesting when we were there, with a lot of foggy days, or fog down in the valley (see pics) but that just added to the ambiance of it all. They have a lot to do and see on the property. The first day, we hired a bird expert to take us around their vast property and spot birds, as well as other wildlife. We saw tons of stunning birds (toucans like crazy), Capuchin Monkeys, and coati. We heard howler monkeys nearby one morning but never saw them. The entire staff was wonderful and over the top friendly. Randy and Louis were always there to answer any questions we had at any time, and they were always extremely accommodating. The food was delicious, I am extremely impressed with how good our dinners and breakfast were every day. A lot of the ingredients they have right there on their farm, and they will take you on property tours where they grow many things, including coffee beans (with their own packaged coffee!), cocoa, and lemons. There is also a river they can take you down to for a dip or even a waterslide if you can endure the steep and slippery terrain. Overall, Rio Magnolia went above and beyond in most every way. We stayed there for New Year's and they hired a local band to play for us! They also brought out a pinata for our kids (and adults) to all take a swing! 5 star service all the way around, and as long as you are looking for a remote place to stay in Costa Rica, I 100% recommend Rio Magnolia.response / report this review -
