I had the MiniGastric Bypass through here April 21st 2021. The care I have received has been great. Dr Cobourg has so much experience doing this surgery, that my surgery time was less than an hour. I have had excellent support from the nurses and dieticians and they are always only a phone call or email away. I love the fact the program promotes whole foods and a real life attitude it has made my journey easier for me. Only 2 months post op and I am down 39 pounds since surgery and 63 pounds since I began speaking to them at the end of March. I am thrilled and my primary care physician is also thrilled with my progress. I truly feel the smartshape saved my life. They certainly allowed me a new lease on life as I am doing things now I haven’t done in years. Thank you Smartshape

I have been a patient of Smart Shape for almost a year now. I’m not sure why there are negative reviews, I’ve had an excellent experience this far. The nurses and dietitians followed up with me on the scheduled cadence and provided me with excellent information, care, and took the time to answer all my questions. I was referred to them by a doctor who was also their client. If it’s good enough for a doctor, it’s good enough for me. I’m very satisfied with my experience and new found health. I recommend Smart Shape without any reservations - they are truly a great team and great leadership.

I would give zero stars if it were an option. I paid $20,000 to have revision gastric bypass. I had an original bypass 20 years ago, but over the years I put on 80 pounds. Being someone who always struggled to lose weight, and was now in menopause, I was eating 600 calories a day to lose 1 pound a week. Because of this I sought out revision, for the purpose of malabsorption. I explained my issues to Dr. Cobourn, and he advised I won't lose as much weight as my first surgery, but patients lose up to 80%. The morning of my surgery, he advised he will just be making my pouch smaller. I asked about malabsorption, and he said I should still have it from my surgery 20 years prior. So I had the surgery, followed the post-surgical diet, and didn't lose a pound. He then agreed to put me through another surgery, where he would remove some of my small intestine which would create malabsorption. After 4 months of not even losing a pound, I joined Dr. Bernstein, where I have lost a 10 pounds so far, but very slowly, considering how restrictive it is. So I am out $20,000 for surgery plus child care costs, as I am a single mom and needed to pay my son's nanny to stay and help me (my son was 2.5). I have since spoken to two OHIP doctors who said they would NEVER advise the revision Dr. Cobourn put my through, but rather a Duodenal Switch, which Dr. Cobourn doesn't do. He may know how to cut, but he obviously has no clue about obesity. When I asked about getting at least some of my money back, he said no, as I received two surgeriestwo surgeries he should never have put me through. Do not go to SmartShape if you have had a previous Roux-en-Y surgery, you will be wasting your time.

I was from Vancouver and Dr. C's patient #20 for the lap band. I paid $20K. I tried but there was no after care. I even went to a Dr. in Seattle for help in deflating the band so that I could drink water. It hurt when I ate so most of the time I was bringing it up or I was hungry, too afraid to eat. 5 yrs later I had moved back to Toronto and Dr. C invited a group of his patients to a meeting to let us know that the band doesn't work the way we thought it would. All I could think of was that, this isn't going to work and I had PAIDED $20,000 FOR A PRODUCT THAT WAS A SCAM!
Why a review now after 20 yrs? Because, many years ago after losing only 40 lbs. and prolonged struggles, I deflated the band completely. I'm now looking into the gastric sleeve through OHIP. The struggle is real!

I sought out this clinic at the recommendation of my neurologist and it is the best decision I have ever made. My life has completely changed for the better. The team is extremely organized and provides thorough information every step of the way. My surgery was quick and easy; I was taken care of beautifully. Recovery was as expected, no problems, but I always had the support of the team. Frequent telephone checkups answer all my questions. I can’t recommend this clinic higher.

I had my VSG surgery almost a year ago with Dr.Cobourn. my experience might be different then someone who lives local, since I am an out of town patient. I met Dr.Cobourn an hour before my surgery and spoke to him twice post op ( day 1 and day 5.) I spoke to one nurse post op and took the two classes mandatory. After being sleeved for 8ish months I finally wrote an email expressing my frustration with the post op care. I thought I would have had some sort of communication asking how I am doing, if I had any questions, if I was struggling, how much weight I have lost or if I just something. There was nothing until I wrote the email. Then every 6 weeks I would get a call which was nice. I didnt feel alone in this journey until she missed our phone apt December 5th and she still hasn't been in contact with me. I feel if you're spending almost 20grand on a surgery you should get some sort of post op care. I'm not sure if in town patients receive the same, but they should at least try to make you feel like you matter rather then just a paycheck to them. Dr.Cobourn is good at what he does surgery wise, but he or th nurses should at least try to reach out and see how you're doing without having to be told.

I had the vertical sleeve surgery and im very pleased with everything I had no complications had direct access to Dr Cobourn the staff was friendly and very helpful so happy with my results.

I had my lap band surgery done by Dr. Chris Coburn in June 2007. I definitely experienced pretty much all of the ups and downs of life with a lapband, but overall I consider it a huge success. I've lost 125 pounds so far. What took me a little while to learn is that the band really is just an aid, and not the be-all and end-all. I had to do my part and start moving more and eating better (and not just less) in order to really start living a healthier life. I've always had excellent support from the SmartShape centre, even though I live in another province. Even nine years later they remember who I am and treat me as a valued client. Three weeks from now I'm having surgery to remove excess skin from my tummy and my upper arms the end goal is coming into sight!!
Thank you Dr. Coburn and the nurses and support staff at SmartShape for helping me to change my life for the SO MUCH better!
