Came here with my family with kids and parents for a table of 6. Had the tasting menu, kappa Maki, natto Maki, curry soba, fried ika rings, chicken Karaage and agedashi eggplant.
The nigiri from the tasting menu were really good, fresh tasting. The prawn tempura was a big prawn, and the ika rings were outstanding. The ika rings were crisp and melt in your mouth center. Normally outside places with squid overcook and become more rubbery. This place has really good squid rings.
My experience was nice. It was a rainy cold night so it wasn't that busy but we got a lot of attention from the chef and server. The food was good. A little bit on the pricier side but they do have sets you can order that is affordable. Their nigiri was good and their tempura was nicely fried.
Fish is fresh with amazing variety, good services. Apart from sushi, the hidden gem is soba. I love their Sansai soba, it beats almost every soba I had before, including Japan.
I took my gf here for her birthday and we had the omakase as well some side dishes. The food was amazing and the quality of the fish was top notch. The staff were very attentive to our table and proactive about confirm the number of people we had in our large group so they would be able to have enough ingredients days prior
One of the best tempura don in North America! Sushis we're good.
One of the best in town. They do not have a large selection, but just go for the nigiri specials that the chef whips up for the day. Preferably pull up a chair at the counter and watch a skilled chef at work. Extremely precise and efficient, he is clearly a step or two above most other sushi chefs in the city. Just eat it as he gives it to you. Do not ask for more wasabi or soy sauce. By the way, did you notice? Taste the soy sauce. Now ponder the wasabi. This is not like the green horse radish stuff that most other cheapy places give you. I also happen to have the salmon roe sushi and the first whiff as I opened my mouth to eat it was that of toasted seaweed. Again, something new compared to what I usually get at other places. Perfect balance of fish & rice, not just slobbering huge chunks of fish on some random rice.
The noodles and other items are also very good. Highly recommended.
Maruyama is a place you go to enjoy sushi. Food is well prepared and consistently good.
Omakase is an experience and their lunch is a steal.
Ate here for a friend's birthday dinner because he likes fancy things. I had the Omakase 60 (courtesy of said friend) and a Home Udon—simply out of this world. The udon had a modicum of MSG taste (maybe the broth was a tad rich for my palette), but otherwise very hearty and homely. The Omakase I have a hard time describing. It won't every be the same twice because that's the point of the dish. Each piece was prepared with such attention and care; each piece feeling the warmth of the chef's hand. The bluefin tuna was/is one of the best things I've ever tasted. So fatty you could see the textured flesh mixed with the marble fat. It melted in my mouth, no chewing required. I would have to go to Japan to experience better.
The regular dinner menu is pricey, but the lunch specials are -amazing- in terms of value and flavour. The menu is very authentic, as well, which as someone who used to live in Japan I can often miss at all the fusion places these days. The service is so nice too :)
The food was fresh and there were a few unique items here. I recommend the tasting menu!
Authentic Japanese restaurant. They make their OWN Udon, which is really good. But I don't like their tempura. I like thin light batters. Their batter was almost bread like; so thick! A little on the expensive side.
Definitely not a 4.2. Had higher expectations on taste and freshness based on price point. Ambience ups to 4.
